Hiligaynon Wikipedia

submitted verification final decision

This language has been verified as eligible.
The language is eligible for a project, which means that the subdomain can be created once there is an active community and a localized interface, as described in the language proposal policy. You can discuss the creation of this language project on this page.

Once the criteria are met, the language committee can proceed with the approval and will verify the test project content with a reliable neutral source, such as a professor or expert.

If you think the criteria are met, but the project is still waiting for approval, feel free to notify the committee and ask them to consider its approval.

  • The community needs to develop an active test project; it must remain active until approval (automated statistics, recent changes). It is generally considered active if the analysis lists at least three active, not-grayed-out editors listed in the sections for the previous few months.
  • The community needs to complete required MediaWiki interface translations in that language (about localization, translatewiki, check completion).
  • The community needs to discuss and complete the settings table below:

  • Support Support Being the fourth most spoken-language of the Philippines, and an important major regional lingua franca, it certainly deserves its own Wikipedia. --Chris S. 06:59, 6 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]
  • Support Support It is the fourth-largest language in the Philippines, a major lingua franca in the Western Visayas region and the primary language of two large provinces (Iloilo and Negros Occidental), as well as a smaller province (Guimaras). --Sky Harbor 23:34, 7 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]
  • Support Support As a major Philippine language and important regional lingua franca, Hiligaynon should certainly join other major languages of the Philippines, which already have their own Wikipedias. Katimawan2005 17:45, 10 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]
  • Support Support Hiligaynon has a rich literature which deserves to be written in its own wiki/language. -- Emanlerona 13:17, 14 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]
  • Support Support -- this language is mutually unintelligble to cebuano and bikol, has an ISO code and a substantial number of users in the Philippines. --Rebskii 15:40, 20 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]
  • Support Support There are many speakers of this langauge in the Philippines; about 11 million speak it. And even if it is not as popular as English and other european languages and Chinese, Wikimedia/Wikipedia might be one of its few hopes of surviving in the internet.--Felipe Aira
  • Support Support with Ilonggo mention -- People in Negros Occidental who call themselves Ilonggos identify their language as "Ilonggo", not Hiligaynon. Experts and laypeople contradict each other constantly in declaring that one is a dialect of the other, or one is dying out in favour of the other, etc. For a language of which many native speakers do not have Internet access, being inclusive is vital for this new Wikipedia to attract sufficient contributors to be stable. When it is created, it should be described as a Wikipedia for Hiligaynon/Ilonggo. --Gronky 00:10, 12 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]
The policy for new languages is quite adamant that only one language can be represented in one Wikipedia. This request is for Hiligaynon and when Ilonggo is considered to be something separate, it cannot be part of this project. GerardM 07:36, 12 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, but this isn't black and white. Hiligaynon and Ilonggo are identical enough to share one page on Canadian French and the French of France are not identical, but they share one Wikipedia. So I'm making two points:
The first is that the proposal gives a language and the regions it's spoken in, but in fact the majority of people in some of those regions would say they do not speak Hiligaynon but Ilonggo. So either Ilonggo should be included or the description or, if you mean to exclude Ilonggo, then the inaccurate claim of where Hiligaynon is spoken should be fixed.
My second point is that IMO the two languages/dialects/whatevers are similar enough, and the number of native speakers with Internet connections is small enough, that excluding either group of people (those who self-identify as Hiligaynon speakers or those who self-identify as Ilonggo-speakers) would be harmful for the sustainability of this proposed Wikipedia. --Gronky 23:34, 12 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I beg to disagree with the statement that "people in Negros Occidental who call themselves Ilonggos identify their language as 'Ilonggo', not Hiligaynon." I am an Ilonggo and I call my native tongue Hiligaynon, not Ilonggo; those who do are misinformed. Ilonggo refers to the people of Iloilo, Negros Occidental and Guimaras who are native speakers of Hiligaynon. — Kguirnela 03:33, 5 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Supporting the request does not help to create the wiki. The required activity is missing on the test project. Please maintain an active test wiki and the Hiligaynon Wikipedia will be approved. Thanks, SPQRobin (talk) 09:20, 23 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

General discussion

If I may chime in on Hiligaynon's interface, we've been trying to get speakers to help translate the interface into the language, both individually and through Wikimedia Philippines. For a while Kguirnela did the work, but of course it's difficult to translate an entire interface if only you are the one doing the work. We've been looking for editors from the region (Berniemack is one), wherever we can, to help finish the interface so they can get to the work of building the encyclopedia, and by extension, help build the encyclopedia as well. --Sky Harbor (talk) 05:59, 9 February 2016 (UTC)[reply]
