  • We now have a persistent issue, w:zh:User:Lmfivan keep posting an article about someone. The person he mentioned in zhwiki is never heard by anyone in zhwiki and cannot be verified that the person really exists. Some pictures used in the article is uploaded to wikicommons by Lmfivan but we found those pictures are copyvio and are not the person he mentioned in the article. His article is been voted to be deleted several times so zhwiki admins have protected the artcle, but Lmfivan created other articles with same contents many times. Again those articles are been voted to be deleted and protected. In the voting we found Lmfivan deleted some others' votes and created some zhwiki accounts to vote keep. Since we have no checkuser accounts in zhwiki, we wish someone here can help us to check the user ip and where he comes from. Here are some info about the user accounts, some are been blocked already:

--Shizhao 06:03, 9 May 2006 (UTC)

w:sv:User:Torvindus

This is not a request for a traditional check, but rather a sort of meta-check, and I'm uncertain to where I ought to post this request.

User:Torvindus claims that someone from 84.72.93.48 has attempted several times to change his/her account password for Swedish Wikipedia. Since I seem to be the only user to use that address recently (http://sv.wikipedia.org/wiki/Special:Contributions/84.72.93.48), I consider Torvindus' claim to be pure slander. Previous IP checks have revealed someone using Torvindus' IP address for creating and abusing an account using my name (Tournesol).

I would like to know if there is any way of finding out whether anybody has indeed tried to change Torvindus' password from that address in the last week, or if these claims are simple lies. If noone at meta.wikimedia.org would be technically able to carry out such a check, any information about who might be able to would be greatly appreciated.

Can you research this for me please and if necessary issue him with warning about repeated vandalism. I do not wish to do it myself, as I think the boy has too much time on his hands already, and worry about further repercussions.

The Swedish user Torvindus insinuates that I am a puppetmaster of a few users. These users haven't edited since a long time, and our checkusers cannot see IP-adresses so far back. Thats why I wonder if you could check if Arminbaba, Tinsel and HelsinkiVampire has ever shared an IP-adress with eachother, or with me, sv:Användare:Mannen av börd. Thanks.

Check user Sahands

According to your policy "Where the user has been vandalising pages or persistently behaving in a disruptive way, data may be released to assist in the targeting of IP blocks, or to assist in the formulation of a complaint to relevant Internet Service Providers." I ask you to check the IP address of the uesr Sahand who made several criminal death-threats to me and my family, and threats of bodily harm. The IP is needed to help his university (University of Ontario Institute of Technology) to track him down because he is in direct violation of their fair use policies in addition to committing felony crime on Wikipedia. In case he has used some other ISP and is not from the University, then the IP will be needed anyway to complain to that ISP which surely will have it's own fair use policies. I am doing this as a way to avoid opening a full police investigation and to go through the appropriate service provider channels. I do not wish him the harm of a full blown police case even though he might deserve it. You can email me at jkorkala@gmail.com with the information.

In Wikipedia, administrators handled him by blocking his write access indefinitely after the threats kept on escalating. Information on the case may be found in wikipedia under his user name, my user name and the appropriate administrative boards.

Upon requesto of Alexander Z. on my talk page. --Snowdog 22:44, 29 November 2006 (UTC)

  Done --Snowdog 23:26, 29 November 2006 (UTC)

Is there any reason why the three users with CU rights on de.wikipedia were not informed or even asked regarding this request?
What was the reason that you have checked several accounts (other than a user told vaguely that there were "problems")?
Why did you publish the outcome of the check (specific IPs) publically? --:Bdk: 01:54, 30 November 2006 (UTC)
  1. Good question. He should have asked to the german CU's, I should have told him to ask to a german CU. But it seemed to me it was an urgent request so I went for it. Still I can possibly have not acted in a proper way.
  2. Because I tought the request has something to do with this.
  3. He asked me to check specific IP's (see here), so the IP's were already made public.

--Snowdog 17:04, 30 November 2006 (UTC)

Elian as one of the local users with CU permission has rejected Alexander's (first) request before.
I was online and reachable all time/the relevant time span. All three CU users on de.wikipedia were not asked in this (second) case, nor was there any entry on our local page for CU requests.
There was obviously no need for any specific urgent action (as it would commonly be in cases of spam attacks or for a few other reasons).
Then he asked you for checking a slightly broader range of users … and you've checked 11 accounts and some IPs (including at least one account without a known connection to this case of sockpuppetry).
The pure IP data is well known, of course. The question is why you've published the according account names for specific IPs (it should have been enough to say "account A and B share one IP"; this is a more general issue).
--:Bdk: 17:52, 30 November 2006 (UTC)
Snowdog, what is your view of the principle that CheckUser requests to stewards are only meant for projects on which there are no local users with CheckUser rights (see top of this page)?
ad 1. Could you explain what exactly made you consider this an urgent request?
ad 2. If you are saying that you know enough German to read this and base your decisions on it, why couldn't you have read this too and see that this user's request had been rejected by Elian? If you did, can we ask you if you are going to use your Steward rights to override local CU request decisions again in the future?
regards, Hoch auf einem Baum 16:21, 1 December 2006 (UTC)
There had been quite a discussion when the checkuser feature was introduced in de-wikipedia [25].Initially, there were concerns about the introduction of this new feature. There was a fear for privacy issues as a loss of protection of private data. One point, however convinced many (including me): The introduction of regular Checkuser-rights on de.wikipedia.org would make the whole process more transparent and make it possible to perform the checkuser-requests consistantly and with mutual checks. I think that the questions posed by User:Hoch auf einem Baum are therfore important for a lot of users. Regards --Hei ber 22:35, 1 December 2006 (UTC)
I used to do some checks when there was no CU on de.wiki. I supposed it was urgent because AZ came to ask my help, and presuming good faith, I supposed he asked to local CU's but he didn't got a prompt reply. It was late, I was tired. Lesson learned. I'll send back all CU request coming from de.wiki. --Snowdog 02:07, 3 December 2006 (UTC)

Checkuser on zh.wikipedia

Accounts request to check: zh:user:打倒中国 3 and zh:user:反中 5

Reason: There is a continuous vandalism case for zh.wikipedia. A user continue registering new accounts and vandal various pages: Blanking pages and adding the words “打倒中国”(means “overthrown Chinese government”), “中華人民共和國是非常笨的国家”(means “China is a very stupid country” )etc.

“The user” total registered at least 15 sockpuppets and each involved in vandalism. (The similar characteristics of the vandal contents are the proof to determine the sockpuppets are from same person). The two accounts request to check are the newest sockpuppets within last 7 days.

Administrators on zh.wikipedia tried to ban a specific IP that these sockpuppets used for creating new account, however “the user” still can do so. From this zh.community guessed “the user” may use dynamic IP in order to escape from banning.

More information of this vandalism case are on zh.wikipedia: zh:Wikipedia:当前的破坏/User:打倒中国. (Information are in Chinese).

Information request to check: 1) Did any user on zh.wikipedia edit using the IP same as these two accounts request to check at the same time. It is because “the user” did not involve in any edit war, instead, the first attack started once he registered. There is a chance that “the user” is the sockpuppet of current user.

2) Please check the country that the IPs located of these two accounts. Please also reveal the ISP used if IPs are on a large ISP, according to checkuser policy. Furthermore, “the user” may use proxy server to access zh.wikipedia as the site is still in the block of China government. If so, please reveal the country of proxy servers located.

I'm also requesting a check on William Mauco (talk · contribs · page moves · block user · block log) as a Bonaparte sock - see this for more. Khoikhoi 03:12, 18 November 2006 (UTC)

More possible socks:

All are single-purpose accounts, most with only one edit each, which is of course to the Proposals for closing projects/Closure of Siberian Wikipedia page. I suspect that they are all Bonaparte, as many of the usernames are Romanian-sounding. Khoikhoi 11:07, 19 November 2006 (UTC)

More single-purpose accounts:

This is starting to get ridiculous. Khoikhoi 18:55, 19 November 2006 (UTC)

There were a number of suspicious accounts before the accusation of mass sockpuppetry was launched:

The first one has a user name which has already been involved in an IP disruption outside Wikipedia - he has no account on Romanian Wiki. Onano has three edits. One to his user page, one to the vote and one obscene posting on the talk page of one of the early supporters of closing. Porneater has three edits too, one to his userpage, one to vote and one to correct his vote. On his Meta user page, he claims to be Ponyeater, but neither Ponyeater nor Porneater exist on English Wiki.

Also suspicious in view of the Mauco affair, not primarily on account of sockpuppetry, but should be checked against the others:

  • fr:User:Jmfayard-fauxnez (no such user on French wiki, FWIW the last name sounds like "phoney" in English)
    • false, there is but with little "f"
      • = Anonymous comment by 125.240.113.194. In fact, the vote by "fauxnez" seems to have been cast by 62.58.252.27 - an anonymous HTTP proxy ([26]).--Paul Pieniezny 21:05, 10 December 2006 (UTC)
  • en:User:Keethraxx (claimed to exist on English Wiki, but only registered contributed there after someone claimed he had no account there)

--Paul Pieniezny 13:02, 20 November 2006 (UTC)

    • It seems I misinterpreted "2006/06/11", after seeing a first contribution (making a user page, which for many days after was the only contribution) was on "2006/11/11". Nevertheless, 5 months' inactivity is rather long. I agree this is not urgent, but after Mauco, there is the possiblity that some are hijacking accounts and others may be ging their second, third, ... accounts to socks. --Paul Pieniezny 02:46, 27 November 2006 (UTC)

Another possible Bonaparte sock: Смирнов (talk · contribs · page moves · block user · block log). Khoikhoi 19:58, 26 November 2006 (UTC)
There has been a checkuser and there is no proof of what Khoi is claiming [27].--Theios tou Euthymiou 20:35, 26 November 2006 (UTC)
Bonaparte has been known to use open proxies. Besides, if it really isn't him, why are you so reluctant to having another check? Khoikhoi 20:37, 26 November 2006 (UTC)

So why are you asking for another checkuser if he's using proxies and it won't be possible to prove it's him? I'm objecting because I am sensitive to users' privacy. IP checks are not made on a whim - this is policy we are talking about.--Theios tou Euthymiou 20:41, 26 November 2006 (UTC)

He often slips up and edits from his homebase in Romania instead. I agree that there has to be a policy violation, and it's the fact that Bonaparte is evading his indef. block. Khoikhoi 20:43, 26 November 2006 (UTC)
I am negative since I think Privacy policy should be estimated. We are better to be careful always. On the other hand, why cannot we reject most of those votes due to lack of vote eligibility? For example, admin votes on meta, we count only votes whose voters put a link to a given local project. --Aphaia 21:48, 10 December 2006 (UTC)
That is what we are now insisting on there too. Unfortunately, there has been at least one instance already of "someone" making a fresh account on Meta, and linking to someone else's older account elsewhere (you could call it a hijacking attempt). So, something more drastic is in order. --Paul Pieniezny 16:59, 11 December 2006 (UTC)
Since language procedure is changed, old voting is obsolute. Checkuser is not necessary. --Dbl2010 05:08, 30 December 2006 (UTC)

Montenegro wiki request vote on Meta (Requests for new languages/Wikipedia Montenegrin)

Wiki: Meta

Please take a look at the last about 30 users that voted in support here. They all made accounts within a very short period of time, and voted in support within a very short period of time. Also, the only reason they created their accounts was so that they can vote (all of them had their first and only edit there, voting in support). To me, this strategy that they think is going to get them a new project is very slippery and must be stopped dead in its tracks. I suspect that User:OutLook and User:Ego and his own are behind this, because they keep claiming that they're "sure" that those votes are actual people who are from Montenegro. link They might be making the sockpuppets themselves, or they may be calling their friends to vote, which is meatpuppetry and still isn't allowed. Please take some action on this matter. Thank you, --Paunović 21:53, 11 November 2006 (UTC)

Just a few comments from someone that got drafted in from IRC...
  1. The article was undergoing massive arguments between multiple users.
  2. The order of "Supports" and "Opposes" was shifted in a very random space and messed up somewhat, for unknown, possibly malacious, reasons. The current page was refactored by me, however Naconkantari has ended the current conflict and I'm trying to distance myself from my own edits (since I probably f***ed up badly).
  3. The article has numerous votes from what appear to be single purpose accounts, things that on Wikipedia/EN are banned.
  4. Some of the users are not even users and they are buried in refactoring of comments and discussions.
  5. It's currently impossible to tell which users are legit and which are not. Some are eerily identical and there have already been accusations of sockpuppetry in the list of users itself.
  6. Ideal checkusers would be between OutLook, Ego and his own, and the red-linked usernames on the support list. On the oppose side, I'd like to see results of TheFEARgod compared with those from SerbiaAndMontenegro and Brasoveanul, since they all signed identically. (Of course, that may be an illegitamate signage and it's buried in the history).
All in all, it feels like (What with the supposed comments of "Vote recruiting" seen on the discussion page) there may be numerous batches of socks, SPAs, or meats voting on the page. And I have already screwed up once. I'd like to get this chapter over with.
Thank you. Logical2u 23:36, 13 November 2006 (UTC)
Also, we just got a very pro-support anon editor hit the page... {{subst:ipvandal|213.149.124.65}}. Don't think it matters. But if CU picks up that IP... hmm..
Explanation

As I have promised I have put explanation of this situation on my talk page. There is also on discussion page a list of IP ranges from Montenegro. I hope you will understand and that this will clear things up. --Ego and his own 00:40, 15 November 2006 (UTC)

Several users again

I request to check following users:

Reasons.

The user V. Z. has been banned from cs.wiki by a decision af the arbitration commitee there; all the activities I stated above have one and the same interesting point: they concentrate on vandalising of users or pages, where also the V. Z. has been involved. And beside this, partly are they rassistic or strongly vulgar.
Remark. I know such request like this take time and I am sorry. But as I was engaged in the events in cs.wiki by the end of 2005 and in this year, which led to the ban for V. Z. and some other persons, and as I am the bureaucrat of the cs.wikisource, i have to keen on protecting of the very new and small cs.wikisource now and in the future. The checking would help. Thanks a lot in advance. -jkb- 16:02, 8 October 2006 (UTC)

Remark Oct: plese check also en:User:Dеzidоr and sk:User:Еgg on Slovak Wikipedia (please use these links, do not type the names by your own), because:

in both cases he created accounts similar to those of some known users from cs.wiki (User:Dezidor and sk:User:Egg), but again, with one or more letters written in a different unicode code; in both cases he posted remarks in an article, saying that I was a member of the old communist secret service in Czechoslovakia

See also w:en:User:-jkb-/Vandalism and impostors again. -jkb- 09:17, 16 October 2006 (UTC)

Especially I request to compare the users above with the w:cs:User:Ježek from the cs.wikipedia, who was one hour ago confirmed as a sockpuppet of the above named account V. Z.. -jkb- 13:35, 16 October 2006 (UTC)

Too old to do a check --Dbl2010 05:08, 30 December 2006 (UTC)

Hindi Wikipedia

There is a user repeatedly creating accounts and posting what apperas to be copyrighted material on the user and talk pages. They can be seen in recent changes right now or in my contributions hi:User:Taxman. Requests to stop have gone unanswered, and they simply repost the material. One of the reposts was by the IP 212.116.220.31. Is that the same IP the other accounts were registered from, and will an account creation block on that IP be sufficient, or are there more IP's that need to be blocked? Thanks - Taxman 20:35, 10 November 2006 (UTC)

Since thos users are not active and since the issue is old, checkuser is not necessary anymore. Local admins can take care of the copyvios if pages are still there. --Dbl2010 05:08, 30 December 2006 (UTC)

Cross-language harassment

I have been subject to harassment at several Wikimedia projects by a user impersonating me at the Japanese Wikipedia, and when this user attempted to hack into my account, I went into paranoia mode and registered as "Ryulong" at every language Wikipedia (even with the little math problem thing). I found that my name had already been registered at the Korean and Chinese Wikipedias (where I had to register as "Ryulong-en" as a temporary measure). I managed to contact administration at ko-wiki, but Shizhao at zh-wiki is seeking a checkuser to confirm this, and he does not have the rights.

The user impersonating me is zh:User:Ryulong and the various IPs (mostly open proxies) used by the user in question can be found at en:User:Interrobamf/Bobabobabo. My own IP can be determined through a checkuser of my meta account (and possibly checked against my accounts en:User:Ryulong or zh:User:Ryulong-en).—Ryulong 05:13, 4 December 2006 (UTC)

I can confirm that zh:User:Ryulong and zh:User:Bobabobabo are the same user. They also aren't the same user as en:User:Ryulong. Datrio 07:06, 4 December 2006 (UTC)

Check user for vandal on vls wikipedia

The West-Flemish Wikipedia is a rather small wikipedia with a very limited number of sysops/admin. Today, it's been vandalized by the same user vls:User:Quantumdood, vls:User:Weertje, vls:User:Alternatief, vls:User:Wielewalter, vls:User:Vandanaal, after the creation and removal of an article about what is en:High Icelandic on the English WP. Check the recent changes from october 6 [28].

This seems a man, name Braekmans, the creator of High Icelandic, and a user who has been active on many wikipedia's, esp. the Dutch nl: and English one for over a year now. An example of his edits [29] on the VLS-wiki. The problem is: this guy has been active on different wikipedia's for over a year, throwing around heavy personnal attacks, vandalizing, and threateing wikipedia. (An example from the English wikipedia from a couple of months ago... albeit in Dutch [30]).

I believe these usernames originate from the same IP adress, probably 84.x.x.x, located in Belgium, part of the IP range of Telenet. ((84.194.241.232 to be specific). Normally, users can be simply blocked, period, and there's no need the further identify them (although the VLS-wiki has limited admin resources, but well, that's our problem). This however is still continuing after a year cross-wiki (the user himself once declared "war on wikipedia") with what seems very bad abuse on different Wikipedia projects, and the least we can do is send a message to the ISP, who might take appropriate actions (or not, the dynamic dial-in address do change regularly). Possibly, a similar request has been done before (I've asked around on the NL-wiki, I believe nl:User:MADe kept a record, I might provide more information the following days). If it proves to be another address, he probably has changed, or someone else has taken over the roll. Anyway, I hope this proves to be a valid reason.

Note: I don't know what the legal regulations are around the Wikimedia projects. My request does indeed ask for the IP of a registered user. First of all, I'm not sure if someone has to rights or abilities to do a check on this small vls-wiki project ? Moreover, I don't know if this can be provided here in public, or in private email, or if someone else can send some standard abuse report. Also, it might be sufficient to confirm the addressed used by the above usernames was in fact 84.194.241.232 Anyway, if someone could help out, I would be gratefull, otherwise, well, too bad, but that's all I can do about it.

Regards --LimoWreck 21:17, 6 October 2006 (UTC)

THIS MAN LIMOWRECK IS A LIAR AND A VANDAL HIMSELF!! Gayseric 21:17, 6 October 2006 (UTC)

Well, there you have it: for anyone who had a doubt, the above user is another sockpuppet (recently blocked on the English wikipedia). Anyway, an abuse report is sent to his ISP, although I might have more effect when it comes from wikimedia; oh well. Anyway, people having more questions might get more information from -I believe- User:oscar or User:RonaldB who are sysop and are active on meta I believe. --LimoWreck 20:39, 20 October 2006 (UTC)
IP information is not available anymore. Check user cannot be done. --Dbl2010 05:08, 30 December 2006 (UTC)

UK wikipedia

Please check uk:User:Роман Олещук and uk:User:Вітася. It seems that they are the same user. I think this man is a vandal. These accounts are trying to add not important information to wikipedia, and or trying to disturb administrators to make their job. --OlegMarchuk 13:13, 12 December 2006 (UTC)

Not done, I see no violations that warrant a check. Those articles are deleted anyway, so there's no point to check if both voters are the same person. MaxSem 16:09, 23 December 2006 (UTC)

simple.wikiquote

Please confirm whether User:NY, User:Superman, or User:Don are sockpuppets of User:Sir James Paul. This is because of possible abuse of sockpuppets in an RfA. I don't need the IP right now, just a Yes/No/Possible/Probable for each, but I suspect that it'll only happen again if I just block the accounts, so I'd like the IP range emailed to me if possible. Thanks, Archer7 09:54, 10 December 2006 (UTC)

Done User:NY, User:Superman, and User:Don have same IP. But not related with User:Sir_James_Paul. As it is stated in RfA RedSoxMan and User:Sir_James_Paul sharing same IP. --Dbl2010 18:46, 23 December 2006 (UTC)
New problem - sockpuppet abuse on Simple Wikipedia. simple:User:Kimberly Ashton (also User:Ashley, User:AshleyT, User:CopperTone) has used sockpuppets to vandalise themselves while keeping edits contructive on the above list accounts. We've looked through them and matched up everything we've got and decided it was the same person, blocked all sockpuppets including a simple:User:Bobo. Bobo is now claiming that he/she is entirely different to this user, and has given their permission via email for a CheckUser to be unblocked. Please confirm if Bobo is operating from 71.231.130.56 (or a similar IP in that range), and whether they are in Canada (as they claim) or New York (sockpuppet abuser's IP location). Thanks, Archer7 16:59, 25 December 2006 (UTC)
User:Bobo has user two different IPs, both from Canada. From that IPs he has created other users: simple:User:Torra and simple:User:Aceata smart, which were used to vote on simple:Wikipedia:Requests for deletion and another one, simple:User:Flight 90 which has only vandalised simple:Fidel Castro. Surely a problematic user, but there is no evidence that he has something to do with simple:User:Kimberly Ashton and similar. --M/ 17:19, 25 December 2006 (UTC)
  • It could be meatpuppetery. But I'm not jumping to conclusions.-- Tdxiang 04:23, 30 December 2006 (UTC)

French Wikinews

I request checkuser for the following pseudo on French Wikinews :

Is this pseudo corresponding with another in French Wikinews ? Thanks for all : --Bertrand GRONDIN – Talk 20:33, 26 December 2006 (UTC)

Hi, what's the reason for check? After looking at his contribs I don't see anything particulary disruptive. What do you suspect? MaxSem 20:51, 26 December 2006 (UTC)
This pseudo exists on french wikipedia too. I'm sure it's a sockpuppet. --Bertrand GRONDIN – Talk 20:58, 26 December 2006 (UTC)

Done He is the only user using his IP, although it is probably dynamic.--Shanel 22:29, 26 December 2006 (UTC)

Chinese Wikipedia

I requst to check some users in Chinese Wikipedia .

I think these account are same user, because

  1. User:美国计生委 hasn't had any editing activities in the past 8 moths.
  2. It appeared to me that when zh:User:Jasonzhuocn blocked zh:User:民國九十五年 at 18:12 UTC today , zh:User:美国计生委 suddenly startedwriting some messages on Jasonzhuocn's talk page 14 minutes after.

--Alex S.H. Lin 19:15, 29 December 2006 (UTC)

Confirmed, all three accounts are operated by the same person. MaxSem 20:22, 29 December 2006 (UTC)
Thank you very much.--Alex S.H. Lin 05:44, 30 December 2006 (UTC)

Checkuser request for Meta

I have just blocked User:Nicolae for three days for disrupting pages related to the closure of the Moldovan Wikipedia; it has been brought to my attention that his behavior is very similar to that of banned user Bonaparte. Not knowing if there are records related to Bonaparte available here on Meta, I'd like to ask that the results be posted to the checkuser-l list. Wikipedia:Requests for checkuser/Case/Bonaparte may also be of assistance, as we have run extensive Bonaparte-related checks on en.wiki. Thanks, Essjay (TalkConnect) 00:40, 15 December 2006 (UTC)

Done, results sent to the aforementioned address. MaxSem 18:55, 23 December 2006 (UTC)
