Userpage spamEdit

User:Alva ?? Cirt (talk) 05:49, 4 September 2008 (UTC)

Yup, spam. Deleted by Cometstyles. --Az1568 06:35, 4 September 2008 (UTC)
Thank you. Cirt (talk) 06:56, 4 September 2008 (UTC)

RossGardler (talk · contribs) - Appears to be another attempt at subtle spamming. Cirt (talk) 12:06, 4 September 2008 (UTC)

Borderline & seems to have semi-useful contribs. As a note, please check whether the abuse is cross-wiki; if so, a report at Talk:Spam blacklist#User: namespace abuse will be helpful. Thanks.  — Mike.lifeguard | talk 12:18, 4 September 2008 (UTC)
Agreed, but these appeared to be just local stuff. Cirt (talk) 12:38, 4 September 2008 (UTC)

Privacy policy in GalicianEdit

Can a sysop move "Privacy policy/gl" to wikimedia. The page name must be "foundation:Política de privacidade" but already the pt translation have this name. Maybe it can be "foundation:Política de privacidade-gl" for example? (I don't know.) In addition I want you to update "foundation:Template:Disclaimer for translation/gl" with the text in "Translation requests/WMF/disclaimer/gl". Thanks a lot! --Toliño Fala aquí comigo 12:30, 8 September 2008 (UTC)

I posted your update to the Galician disclaimer, but the Privacy policy needs to be reviewed by another gl speaker before we post it on the Foundation wiki. Would you mind finding someone to review it? Cbrown1023 talk 21:01, 8 September 2008 (UTC)
OK. I have requested it to Prevert. --Toliño Fala aquí comigo 10:21, 9 September 2008 (UTC)

I request fully protectionEdit

For my page: User:Dferg/Identity. It keeps my real identity. Please, see that anyone has modified the scheme before protecting. Thank you. --Dferg (talk) 14:30, 13 September 2008 (UTC)

User:75.84.58.135Edit

This user is vandalizing the interlanguage wikisource...not sure where to report this. -Nard the Bard 02:22, 15 September 2008 (UTC)

That wiki has it's own sysops. SWMT will be alerted in IRC if there are more edits. If they continue and no local admins are available, a steward may block the IP.  — Mike.lifeguard | talk 02:27, 15 September 2008 (UTC)

User:TroefkaartEdit

The following discussion is closed.

User:Troefkaart is constantly accusing myself and other users participating in Wikisage of trolling, plagiarism, etc. On nl:Wikipedia and zea:Wikipedia he can do what he wants (see a.o. [1]), but now this has spilled over to meta.

  • [2] 'trollenplagiaatprojectje'
  • [3] insinuating that one of our good-faith users had tried to sabotage our project
  • [4] 'lies and slander'

I hope that this is not considered acceptable behaviour here. Guido den Broeder 17:07, 21 September 2008 (UTC)

Do not import local disputes here please. You started a page here (Requests_for_comments/Dutch_Wikipedia_-_unblock_request) to ask for something, you should not complain if it does not come out exactly as you might wish. Do not remove the comments of others, leave that to third parties to determine. I've warned both of you to remain nondisruptive. ++Lar: t/c 17:46, 21 September 2008 (UTC)
Excuse me? This complaint is about the nature of Troefkaart's comments. It has nothing to do with any outcome whatsoever (there is no outcome). And since when do meta sysops return to talk deleted comments like this? [5] Has there been a policy change that we were not informed about? Guido den Broeder 18:37, 21 September 2008 (UTC)
Do not delete the comments of others that you are directly involved in a dispute with (except from your own talk page). Leave that for sysops or uninvolved parties to do, please. Do not forum shop your disputes, either. ++Lar: t/c 16:21, 23 September 2008 (UTC)
Right. More magic words, but do you actually take a look at what's going on? No. Don't put defamatory comments back to score a WP:Point, and don't call due process forum shopping. Guido den Broeder 20:26, 23 September 2008 (UTC)

No action needed here, per Lar.  — Mike.lifeguard | talk 01:01, 24 September 2008 (UTC)

MediaWiki:Centralauth-readmore-text/frEdit

May someone remove the meta: prefix from the link so that it links to Help:Unified login/fr ? It is used as interwiki prefix in other wikis. If the default message doesn't appear, then use this:

:''[[Help:Unified login/fr|En lire plus sur le '''compte unique''']]…''

Thanks :) iAlex 19:51, 22 September 2008 (UTC)

Fixed. Thanks. --Erwin(85) 19:54, 22 September 2008 (UTC)

Inappropriate external links?Edit

Hello, I'm not sure whether this is the right place to ask this, but I have a question regarding the content of the user page of Mr. Guido den Broeder. The general rule, as I understand it, is that one "should avoid substantial content on [ones] user page that is unrelated to Wikipedia", of which "advertising or promotion of a business or organization unrelated to Wikipedia" and "other non-encyclopedic related material" are mentioned as examples ([6]). Recently Mr. Den Broeder added quite a lot of links to his user page to articles he wrote on a website called Wikisage.org. In spite of its name, which might be considered slightly misleading, this site is a private project of Mr. Den Broeder and is not part of the WMF in any way. On the contrary, it seems to originate from Mr. Den Broeder's discontent with Wikipedia ([7]). Now I wonder: is this kind of external linking appropriate and is the fact that Mr. Den Broeder has tried several times to export conflicts from this personal wikiproject to meta relevant in this matter? Thank you in advance for your opinion. Sincerely, Wutsje 05:05, 24 September 2008 (UTC)

Ah, yes, another user from nl:Wikipedia joins the war effort. No, mr. Wutsje, it is your nl:friends who exported their conflicts to our site, not the other way around. Did I ever hurt the foundation in any way? Does a link to a non-foundation mediawiki website hurt the foundation? At Wikisage we don't forbid mentioning other encyclopediae. I thought the foundation intended their projects to be open, but perhaps the GFDL is only used for propaganda? Guido den Broeder 12:04, 24 September 2008 (UTC)
Dear Mr. Den Broeder, my question above is simply that: a question. I am most certainly not involved in any "war effort", as you call it - and I do not appreciate being linked by you to anything that might happen on your personal website. Please refrain from that kind of remarks in the future, thank you. Sincerely, Wutsje 14:46, 24 September 2008 (UTC)
Ah, if only you had stuck to the question. But no, you wanted to attack both our project and me personally as you went along. If you regret that, fine, apologize and strikethrough. Guido den Broeder 18:17, 24 September 2008 (UTC)
This kind of external linking can be appropriate as it identifies the person who uses the account. On wikis where the user is actively editing and adding content that can help in finding the user when specific expertise is needed. When the user is adding these links in mainspace/category/template space that can be seen as inappropriate, as it would be a conflict of interest, and just to circumvent issues with that (it may be OK, but it can be promotional, better to avoid the suggestion of promotion at all and seek the way of discussion).
However, on wikis where the editor is not active (e.g. where the editor only performs minimal edits (repairing typos) or no edits at all), and on wikis where content is not an issue I would be less inclined to find this appropriate. Userpages still show up in google searches, and as such linking on these pages can be seen as promotional (as it is completely unneeded to have those links there). Such userpages better link back to the main account (or main accounts). Beetstra 19:58, 24 September 2008 (UTC)
Google hits don't interest me. I've put a NOINDEX on the page. Guido den Broeder 07:27, 25 September 2008 (UTC)
Great :-) .. still it is completely useless to link to them on non-content wikis, and on wikis where you don't contribute to any great extend. If you perform edits and people go to your userpage people will still see the links, and they still serve the purpose. --Dirk Beetstra T C (en: U, T) 10:14, 25 September 2008 (UTC)(expanded --Dirk Beetstra T C (en: U, T) 10:15, 25 September 2008 (UTC))
By the way, NOINDEX only works on the page which you want not to be indexed. And I am not sure if the community does not want to index this page. --Dirk Beetstra T C (en: U, T) 10:17, 25 September 2008 (UTC)
Strikethrough of part, I misunderstood your edit summary, I am sorry. --Dirk Beetstra T C (en: U, T) 10:19, 25 September 2008 (UTC)

We try to be reasonable about this. Limited external links on a user page are fine... long lists of grievances, or commercial endeavours that the user directly benefits from, probably are not. Let us not make this be another facet of the disagreement that Hierr den Broeder has with various folk. ++Lar: t/c 14:50, 28 September 2008 (UTC)

Let's not put the blame where it doesn't belong, either. Guido den Broeder 07:07, 29 September 2008 (UTC)

requesting unification for user name HeinEdit

I'm Hein on en.wikipedia.org; when trying to edit an article on de.wikipedia.org I discovered that my account needs to be unified, yet according to http://toolserver.org/~vvv/sulutil.php?user=Hein the user name has been registered on other properties already (among them meta.wikimedia.org, that's why I'm not logged in here).

I understand that I need assistance from a bureaucrat with fixing this. If some other "Hein" has much stronger claims to the name, I'd cede the name. It'd be great to sort this out before/instead of creating new different user names.

Thanks :-)

Import en:Help:Multilingual support and relavant pagesEdit

Please import these page from English Wikipedia to Meta-Wiki. I think we need this page for coordinating between Wikimedia projects and fighting against cross-wiki vandalism. Thanks.--Kwj2772 12:59, 1 October 2008 (UTC)

Do we really need that page on Meta? Furthermore, we already do have pages for coordination on Meta - indeed that's what the entire wiki is for. See Vandalism reports, Talk:Spam blacklist, Talk:Interwiki map, Multilingual speedy deletions, Special:PrefixIndex/SR...  — Mike.lifeguard | talk 15:52, 1 October 2008 (UTC)

User:ChaosEdit

  • I believe that putting this comment is insulting and inappropriate , to describe any person using these terms goes under the terms of abuse , I understand that it was directed originally to a user who is not involved in wiktionary Masry , repeating it in this discussion is meant to describe the supporters of the project with these terms and that User:Chaos supports such comments. As one of the supporters of this project and the user who put the proposal I feel they are unsupported and unjustified , can User:Chaos provide evidence why he thinks this project's supporters should be described that way? , believe he can't because there was nothing to justify calling any supporter these names . Many thanks Ghaly 20:57, 4 October 2008 (UTC)
You should discuss this with the user in question.  — Mike.lifeguard | @en.wb 20:07, 8 October 2008 (UTC)

ChoralWikiEdit

http://www.choralwiki.org seems to have changed its internal link structure. While the homepage http://www.cpdl.org redirects to http://www.choralwiki.org, the subpages do not redirect to the correct pages, but to the homepage. choralwiki:Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart should link to http://www.choralwiki.org/wiki/index.php/Wolfgang_Amadeus_Mozart instead of http://www.cpdl.org/wiki/index.php/Wolfgang_Amadeus_Mozart. What must be done? --FordPrefect42 19:50, 8 October 2008 (UTC)

Hmm, I don't think we do troubleshooting in Meta for non-WMF projects. OhanaUnitedTalk page 19:56, 8 October 2008 (UTC)

Page undeletionsEdit

Can someone undelete Making fun of Britannica, Errors in the Encyclopædia Britannica which have been corrected in Wikipedia, and their talk pages if any, and tag them with Template:Interwiki redirect? One or more of those pages contain the page history of , which is needed to comply with the GFDL. The very earliest history of that page is at . It would be nice if we could import history from Meta into the English Wikipedia, because many pages were moved from the English Wikipedia to Meta and vice versa. Thanks, Graham87 10:39, 14 October 2008 (UTC)

Done. It would be nice. However, English Wikipedia has that user right disabled. You can, however, request it from a steward. I suggest that you get consensus locally first before asking. Majorly talk 15:20, 14 October 2008 (UTC)
Thanks. I didn't realise that a steward could control import rights. Graham87 01:18, 15 October 2008 (UTC)
I'd like Talk:Errors in the Encyclopædia Britannica which have been corrected in Wikipedia to be undeleted as well. I don't think the other talk page contains any useful history. Graham87 01:22, 15 October 2008 (UTC)

Language tag change request 'roa-rup'-> 'rup'Edit

Aromanian's language code, as per ISO639-2 is 'rup'. In the same standard 'roa' designates 'other Romance languages'. Using 'roa-rup' for Aromanian is redundant because 'roa' and 'rup' are hierarchically same-level specifiers (for example, one uses 'ita' or 'it' for Italian, not 'roa-ita' even though Italian is also a Romance language).
I hope this is the right place for such a request. Regards, --Doruuu 19:01, 14 October 2008 (UTC)

Languages on www.wikipedia.orgEdit

I changed the Www.wikipedia.org template/temp page so that the page now remembers a user's preferred language, overriding the default settings in his or her browser. This is done using a little bit of javascript and a cookie. I would appreciate it if an admin would have a look at this and consider copying it to Www.wikipedia.org template. Thnaks.
