Project Goal
editChoose one or more of the following goals. You can add or delete goals as needed.
- Recruit new editors of diverse nature, with emphasis on female editors
- Rejuvenate existing editors, especially those who participated in the gender gap editathons
- Add or improve content -focused on diversity topics
Project Plan
editActivities
editTell us how you'll carry out your project. Be sure to answer the following questions:
1. Are you doing one editathon or training or a series of editathons or trainings?
- Series of editathons are planned to address diversity in Wikimedia projects pertaining to bridging gender gap, addressing the needs of people, inclusiveness for lesser known language Tulu, adding contents on diverse topics (like commerce, science, women health, women achievers, etc) and more. We have an informal group named Wikiwomen Mangaluru whose aim is to encourage more women to become Wikipedia editors and also address the difficulties and challenges faced by women while contributing to Wikipedia and editing its pages. Last year, we organised a series of editathons, totalling to 6, at various places of Karnataka with an aim to bridge the gender gap with support from Kravali Wikimedians User Group and few colleges in Karnataka. They were successful. We learnt that follow-up editathons at the same places will help in many ways -increasing the skills of those editors, rejuvenating the editors, creating a sustainable Wikimedia community at those places. In fact, it is a request from the participants of series of Gender Gap editathon of 2018. Apart from those places, we will be adding new places in this series with enhanced themes or topics, to address diversity. The editathons are planned to start from the month of May. The places for editathons are-
Ser.No. | Place | Tentative Dates |
---|---|---|
1 | Belagavi | May 18-19 |
2 | Mangaluru | June 8-9 |
3 | Udupi | June 22-23 |
4 | Shivamogga | July 13-14 |
5 | Moodabidire | TBD |
6 | Tumkur | TBD |
7 | Ujire | TBD |
8 | Koppala | TBD |
Apart from these editathons, we are also planning to have photowalk to add photos of some heritage place of Karnataka and adding articles related to that to Wikipedia. We will also conduct supplementary online editathons which do not need any financial support.
The actual event pages will be created in the respective language Wikipedias.
2. How will you let your community know about the event? Please paste links below to where relevant communities have been notified of your proposal, and to any other relevant community discussions.
- We will inform the community by multiple ways-
- Event pages
- Village pumps
- Mailing lists
- Social media like Facebook, Whatsapp, Twitter and local news papers
- Sending direct emails to those participated earlier
3. Do you have experienced Wikimedia editors to lead the event?
- Yes
4. Do participants have the equipment or skills needed to participate and contribute high quality content? If not, how will you support them?
- We encourage the resourceful participants, if any, to bring their own resources like laptops and data cards. The editathons will be arranged at various colleges with computer labs thus addressing the issue of equipment availability. On the first day of the editathons, there will be trainings for new editors.
5. How will you engage participants after the event(s)?
- The participants will be kept in touch after event though email, social media like Facebook and Whatsapp group.
6. Is there anything else you want to tell us about this project?
- While addressing the diversity issue, this project also will bring some needed content to Kannada and Tulu Wikipedias.
Impact
editHow will you know if the project is successful and you've met your goals? Please include the following targets:
- Number of events - 8
- Number of participants - 200
- Number of new editors - 160
- Number of of articles created or improved - 100
- Number of repeat participants (for projects that include a series of events) - 40
Resources
editWhat resources do you have? Include information on who is organizing the project, what they will do, and if you will receive support from anywhere else (in-kind donations or additional funding).
- I am an active Wikipedian for nearly 3 years and will be taking part in all the editathons as one of the resource persons. I will train the new editors on basics of Wiki editing. I will be supported by the veteran Wikipedians of Wikiwomen Mangaluru and of Karavali Wikimedians User Group. We will be conducting the editathons at various educational institutions who will support us by providing computer lab with Internet connection.
What resources do you need? For your funding request, list bullet points for each expense and include a total amount.

- Support - This is a very useful and important project. We have seen in Karnataka, India, that regular editathons, outreach activities, meetups, all help a lot in keeping the community alive and getting more content into Wikipedias. These editathons will also instill new energy into the existing editors some of whom were participants of previous editathons. I strongly recommend funding this project.--Pavanaja (talk) 03:58, 7 March 2019 (UTC)
