This report for a Rapid Grant approved in FY 2018-19 has been reviewed and accepted by the Wikimedia Foundation.

Goals edit

Did you meet your goals? Are you happy with how the project went?

Yes. We originally planned to conduct 8 editathons. But we organised 9 editathons, 1 meetup and a photowalk. last one event was organised after the pandemic and hence there was a gap of almost one year between the previous event and the last event. Since Wiki-20 coincided with the last event, we organised it as Wiki-20 celebration.

Outcome edit

Please report on your original project targets. Please be sure to review and provide metrics required for Rapid Grants.

Target outcome Achieved outcome Explanation
8 Editathons 9 Editathons, 1 Meetup, 1 Photowalk We originally proposed to have 8 editathon. We spent the money judiciously and also we got concessional rates at some places. This helped us to organize one more editathon and a meetup to celebrate Wiki-20.
200 participants 134 participants There were many delays in the execution of the project as explained in the discussion page. This lead to problem in bringing in more number of new editors as we promised earlier. But we ended up adding good number of new articles as well as improved many articles.

Learning edit

Projects do not always go according to plan. Sharing what you learned can help you and others plan similar projects in the future. Help the movement learn from your experience by answering the following questions:

  • What worked well?

We got good response for the project. We organised one additional editathon, one meetup and a photowalk. The editathons were centered around different themes. Each editathon had separate theme. The response was very good. Very good number of articles were added as well as existing articles were improved a lot. Many participants are still contributing to Wikipedia.

  • What did not work so well?

In this project period there was heavy rain which led to heavy flooding in many areas of Karnataka. Many colleges and educations institutes were badly affected due to this. Their academic schedules got disrupted. All our editathons were planned in educational institutes for availability of PC lab with Internet facility. Hence the editathons could not be conducted on the dates originally planned. Some institutes totally opted out due to some other activities which came up suddenly. Hence we re-scheduled the editathons both with respect to dates and venues.

  • What would you do differently next time?

We may organise workshops cum editathons involving general public apart from students from educational institutions. There will be many people who are interested in contributing to Wikipedia but not knowing how. We should target such persons and organise workshops to train them. We have not yet figured out how to do this.
Many participants are interested in learning some advance topics. We may conduct some advanced training programs to such people.
