Module:Wiki99 edit
Thanks for your development of Module:Wiki99. I do not understand the code at all, and just adapted existing code for the Wiki99 project.
The concept of translating articles into multiple languages is inspiring. I have used it to ask for wiki support from organizations such as with

- I slowly make it evolve, fixing things one by one; I'm about to implement the missing selection of languages (that was documented but that needs some rework on the code to do that.
- I've tuned the resources usage, fixed missing "local" declarations, made it translatable. Now I will concentrate on the languages list (the list of about 30 languages is now almost complete, I can still fix the missing icons; I also made sure that the generated code is minimized (using a more stylesheet that allows more compact code, so that it now supports more languages and more article entries).
- I've tune the Wiki99/software sample page to sort it by relevance (ordered by number of languages supporting them, or declarations); and added some more "popular" topics than those existing.
- There's still something to to for the link going to query Wikidata, I don't know what it really performs; but that's not really part of the module. verdy_p (talk) 00:34, 13 September 2022 (UTC)
- Now the module is almost complete and supports a custom list of languages. I tuned it to minimize the execution cost, the generated page sizes. I used a templatestyles sheet as well for that purpose. It now also supports some optional columns like an image column. Is is no longer "pre-alpha" but alpha. Also I've unified the internal list of supported languages so that we no longer need to separately adapt it between the module and the template supporting the translation (that template is smaller and faster to process with lower cost). - @Bluerasberry: If you look now at the module, it has made huge progresses in terms of presentation and facilities; now:
- it can list long list of articles and long list of languages while scrolling it inside the page width; the scrollbar will always be visible in the visible part of the page;
- the header column containing the article name remains sticky on the left when scrolling the table to right;
- the column containing the QID on Wikidata remains sticky on the right when scrolling the table to the left;
- the header columns remain stocky at top when scrolling down the table;
- images are correctly handled and sized;
- language columns are preordered so that the user language comes first before its fallback languages;
- the article column now display the Wikidata label of the item in the user language
- the site link if there's one for that item will link to the first Wikipedia article matchin the user language or its fallbacks
- all Wikimedia languages are supported, most of them have their icon at top; support is present for legacy language codes that don't follow BCP47 rules in their interwiki codes, but the HTML generated is BCP47 conforming
- support for using a RTL presentation is included: look at page by jsut changing your user language (or byt adding the "?uselang=ar" parameter in the URL).
- (Note that the stylesheet to support sticky columns and headers was hard to test, but I found a working solution, which seems to be OK across browsers that support "display:sticky" (I found a way to solve the bug in Chrome: tables are no longer using "collapsed" borders at all, as they are not correctly rendered on sticky boxes); for other browsers that don't support "sticky" boxes, tables will continue to expand past the page width, and maximum viewport)
- This is effective on other Wiki99/* project pages, and I've setup one: see how simple it is to use!
- And it is always as fast and efficient !
- More small tunings may come, and you may have suggestions. But that module is no longer "alpha" but a very fucntional beta almost ready for reuse in many pages. verdy_p (talk) 22:46, 4 October 2022 (UTC)

- For the list above, this just describes what I improved. But users of the module shuold not worry about that, except for understanding the history of edits. Various small issues have been incremantelly solved. In addition to the above,
- I have optimized the generated "include size" to allow listing more items; this required tuning the CSS class selection and styles (I had one issue that caused a Wiki99/* to break), removing also the "cross" mark for articles not found (now they are empty cells).
- I improved the selection of Images or other media files (to be more exhaustive, and to sorting properties by order of preference (so now, if we don't have an image, we can have PDF documents, or videos, or audio),
- I completed the other properties found in Wikimedia Commons, to count them in the last column (e.g. tabular data). I will soon link the last column to a Commons galery if there's one, or to a Commons category.
- I've converting some other existing Wiki/* pages (and I'm working on the COVID19 subpage.
- I'll add other Wikidata properties to ignore as they are not "main" (e.g. there are some other "identifier" or "URL" subclasses).
- Note that because there are statistics displayed in the last column, we can sort the topics nidependantly of cultures, and have an accurate metric about what is "important" for Wiki99... I've sorted them by number of languages, otherwise by number of Wikidata "main" properties, otherwise by Commons properties.

- I can't be present, and can't talk in video or audio for technical reasons. In fact I made that in the hope that it could help, and if you find it useful, that was what I intended.
- Of course I can continue to help (or fix things, or add some additional filters).
- The tricky part was to optimize the generated size in HTML, optimize the memory used, and minimize wikidata requests, and finally tune the CSS precisely to get the effect I wanted: a table that fits on the page, but which can still scroll iits content while preserving headers and important columns on the left and right (so the tabkle is easy to read even if we scroll it).
- Also I passed lot of time to tune the list of languages and make it fit. And to resolve aliases or differences between BCP47 and Wikimedia interwiki codes. As well I have tuned a "simple" list of most frequent languages (the earlier version by default covered ALL languages supported by Wikipedia, plus some languages in incubation that will come soon as they've already been approved!).
- Finally I have updated several existing Wiki99 pages for several topics, but more are possible (you'll note that I had to split the topic of "food" from "agriculture": there are still some limits on the number of items you can put on the same page: the limit is a bit higher when you use less languages. However even today, it is much faster and generates smaller pages than the initial version, even if it presents many more items and languages and displays more information about each item. verdy_p (talk) 23:57, 2 November 2022 (UTC)
- Note that if you plan a presentation I may be live in a chat to welcome suggestions/comments, there are possibly still things to had or tune. It is no longer alpha, but is still a very usable beta. And may be it may be the base for further developments (e.g. the technic I used, based purely on sanitized CSS and that does not use any Javascript, that can render larger tables and make them scrollable while keeping some headers displayed. Things could have been easier if Mediawiki accepted column groups and row groups in tables (they are part of standard HTML since extremely long and are very safe, but Mediawiki still rejects "colgroup", "thead", "tbody" and "tfoot" elements for unknown reasons, even if they have no equivalent in the Mediawiki syntax for tables, we should be able to use them as HTML tags).
- Also I don't see exactly what you are calling the "global canon". Do you mean the concept of getting extended statistics that span as many languages as possible to get effective usage and need, and then being able to sort these lists of "important" items without making any assumption primarily based on English? Note also that the module can still be splitted in several parts, notably some of its tables. Also I may tune it to remove the country/region/language flags or icons in the table header; I had just kept them because they were already present, even if I have added many more of them. Other notable things is the list of languages and their correspondance with BCP47. And the list of Wikidata properties (both are tunable almsot independantly). For now the module is monolythic. And there may be still some remaining improvements possible for better performance or for reduicing the resource usage even if I have past a long time to improve that to support larger lists of languages and items. verdy_p (talk) 08:46, 3 November 2022 (UTC)

Queering Wikipedia 2022 Announcement edit
Wikimedia LGBT+ and the organizing team of Queering Wikipedia is holding a Queering Wikipedia 2022 Meeting for LGBT+ Wikimedians and allies. The program will start with an informative, social and cultural activity on Friday 21st October at 18h UTC and working sessions on Saturday 22nd from 14h until 18h with an informal follow-up.
If you have been an active Wikimedian, contributing on LGBT+ topics, supporting LGBT+ activities or if you identify as part of the larger LGBT+ community and allies in Wikimedia, please come help us build our network of LGBT+ Wikimedians, set goals and develop our organization.
We will be meeting online, but encourage you to join in person with fellow Wikimedians if easy and safe. Our working languages are English and Spanish.
Registration for this online event is free and is open until Friday 21st October at 21h UTC.
