I Can Speak Neapolitan!
editIf you were looking for someone who can speak Neapolitan, then just contact me, and I will perhaps give you a few sample texts in my local Neapolitan. Oh, but do know that in fact the Neapolitan that I speak is one of the hundreds of regional dialects of it that exist throughout the Mezzogiorno (Southern Italy). --Giacomo DiBenedetto 22:59, 21 April 2008 (UTC)
Hello! The breton wikiquote (see the test project) is ready to be approved and become official. All the criterias are completed: we've got an ISO 639 code, the language is unique with more than 300.000 native speakers, the test project is very active, the MediaWiki interface is completely translated! Could you help us to have our project approved? Thank you very much in advance!Benoni 13:25, 4 November 2007 (UTC)
2007 Steward Confirmations
editHi. This is a semi automated notice so my apologies if it seems a bit impersonal. You're listed as holding the Steward permission. As you know, Stewards get reconfirmed yearly, and it's that time again... I noticed that you haven't yet filled out your statement at Stewards/confirm. If you'd like to learn what the community thinks, please visit the page and put in your statement. Volunteers have been busily translating statements already. It would be best to do this before November 26, as that is when the page is opened for public comment, to coincide with the elections of new stewards. If you would like to not be reconfirmed and have your name removed, you can remove your section, or ask a volunteer to do it for you. I hope this information helps. If you have any questions or comments, there is ongoing discussion at Talk:Stewards/elections_2007. Oh, one last thing, if you already knew about it and just hadn't gotten round to it, apologies for the reminder! :) ++Lar: t/c 04:41, 15 November 2007 (UTC)
WMSE
Hi, Jon, could you unprotect the main page of the Oromo Wikipedia? The only local admin, om:User:Diroma Elias has been missing in action since July, but before he left he fully locked the main page, which, I feel, is not helpful. I suppose the best idea is to change the mainpage to move=sysop,edit=autoconfirmed, in order to give other Oromo speakers the chance to update it. The level of activity there is very modest, albeit it exists. Thanks in advance, --Johannes Rohr 18:22, 17 December 2007 (UTC)

Re: Wikimania 2009/Toronto/Infobox
editRegarding your undo edit,[1] the reason why I added page break tag is because "zh-yue" is a Cantonese wiki in Chinese (粵語). If I don't add page break, it breaks up the text of this language into 2 lines, 1 line saying "zh-" and another saying "yue". This could mislead or confuse those who're not familiar with the iso lettering that represents Cantonese. Please always assume good faith towards others' edits. Thank you. OhanaUnitedTalk page 21:40, 23 December 2007 (UTC)
- Of course I assume good faith; it's just that on my screen, nothing seemed out of order at all, and the edit just made the list look a bit awkward. But Cantonese's real code is just yue (without zh-), so I'll change it to that. Jon Harald Søby 13:28, 24 December 2007 (UTC)
- Check [2] (an article of Toronto in Cantonese). On the url, it clearly says "zh-yue", not just "yue" OhanaUnitedTalk page 18:25, 24 December 2007 (UTC)
- Believe me, I know language codes. The URL of the Cantonese and Minnan Wikipedias are wrong, and a move has been requested; the only reason they haven't been moved yet is because it is a quite difficult task to perform for the developers. (See also ISO639-3:nan and ISO639-3:yue.) But that is no reason for us to use the wrong codes other places.

Cnyborg 12:25, 14 January 2008 (UTC)
- Jepp, det stemmer. Moroe greier. Jon Harald Søby 11:57, 19 January 2008 (UTC)

Jutlandic
editWhat must I do? I have created my page: Requests for new languages/Wiktionary Jutlandic Ælsån 16:44, 7 February 2008 (UTC)
- You need to translate the ~500 most used messages on Betawiki (where, I've seen, you've already registered), and get some more people to join you in the project. Good luck! Jon Harald Søby 17:22, 7 February 2008 (UTC)
Breaking changes to {{other languages}}
editHello Jon. I see you've added {{#ifexist:}}
to {{other languages}}. This will break many pages due to the ifexist limit (which will soon to be lowered to 100). The limit was the primary reason for the recent overhaul of the translation template system, and we've significantly lowered the number of breaking pages.
However, this change can add up to 70 instances (of an eventual maximum of 100) per page, and that's before the server even starts parsing the page content. —{admin} Pathoschild 04:45:07, 08 February 2008 (UTC)
- I know that in theory it can be used up to 70 times, but that's hardly ever the case. The most translated page that I know of, Board elections/2007/en (not counting the main page, which doesn't use this template), has 23 translations – and doesn't use ifexist at all besides that. So there shouldn't be any problems with it any times soon – if there is, we'll figure something out. Jon Harald Søby 19:29, 9 February 2008 (UTC)
- Good enough; if we're 70 instances over the limit for a bunch of pages, we'll have an easy solution. :) In the meantime, can you think of a reliable fix for incorrectly reddened links to English main pages (like Bot policy) besides adding another ifexist check? —{admin} Pathoschild 01:14:59, 17 February 2008 (UTC)

And I am so far enjoying my military service – I think it is a bit different in Norway than what it is in Iran... Jon Harald Søby 13:44, 19 February 2008 (UTC)

Hello. Did anybody proposed the final approval of Erzya Wikipedia? Is discussion in mailing list in progress? 6 february Pathoschild said that the Erzya Wikipedia seems ready for approval. A.M.D.F. 18:28, 18 February 2008 (UTC)
Inquiry
editMr. Soby:
I'm curious as to why my language proposal has been denied.
I know it requires a valid ISO 639 code, and I know there is not one specific to simple French, but nor is there one dedicated to simple English, yet that page exists. If the idea is to use basic French, why doesn't just the ISO 639 code "fr" (for regular French) suffice?
Isn't it a bit contradictory to allow a simple English page, yet deny a simple French one? Both are very widely-spoken languages.
I'm sorry, sir, but your comment does not satisfy. --Ashley 14:55, 18 February 2008 (UTC)
- The Simple English Wikipedia was created long before there was any sort of policy in place as to what kind of languages were allowed to get Wikipedia projects. Today the Simple English Wikipedia would have been rejected f orexactly the same reason the Simple French Wikipedia was rejected. In fact, a Wikinews in Simple English was recently rejected for that reason. We have also denied Wikipedias in Simple German and Simple Spanish in the past, for exactly the same reason.
- Instead, the best alternative is to instead create a WikiProject in the French Wikipedia with the aim of simplifying the language used where that is possible. That way you will avoid the double effort a simple French Wikipedia is bound to be, and your work will also benefit a lot more people than it would have otherwise. So it is a win-win situation for all. Jon Harald Søby 10:26, 20 February 2008 (UTC)
