Central Notice
Hi!
Sorry for comming here directly, but I've see you just edited a banner. The wikiMOOC campaign will start in one hour, but the link is still incorrect, it should be https://www.france-universite-numerique-mooc.fr/courses/WMFr/86001/session01/about. Would it be possible for you to correct it ?
Thanks, and happy new year 2016 — 0x010C ~talk~ 22:52, 4 January 2016 (UTC)
- Hi 0x010C - I'm actually not sure how to fix this because this banner uses some weird parser functions that I can't really work out. I've given it a go but it still seems to link to the original link. Joe Sutherland (WMF) (talk) 23:12, 4 January 2016 (UTC)
- @0x010C: Should be working now. Though it looks like the campaign isn't active. Is it your own campaign? Joe Sutherland (WMF) (talk) 23:15, 4 January 2016 (UTC)
- Thanks!
- Yes, it's the campaign for the french WikiMOOC, for which I'm working with ~10 other wikipedian, but none of us have the right to edit CentralNotice. The campaign should start in something like 40 min, I guess it must be normal that the campaign is not yet active, but I could be wrong and not know some elements.
- Thanks again for your help — 0x010C ~talk~ 23:23, 4 January 2016 (UTC)
- Thanks again, indeed . Jules78120 (talk) 23:27, 4 January 2016 (UTC)
- We don't know how the CN interface precisely works. If the 'Enabled' checkbox here needs to be checked in order to enable the start of the campaign at 00:00 UTC, can you checked it (activate the campaign) please? Jules78120 (talk) 23:41, 4 January 2016 (UTC)

Wikipedia 15 FAQ
Hi, I made some changes in Wikipedia 15/Knowledge is joy to prevent it from breaking translated versions of Wikipedia 15/Site/FAQ (example). I believe it fixed the problem, but it need to be evaluated by a translation admin. Could you please do it and, if not working, try another code? Thanks, Eduardogobi (talk) 05:15, 12 January 2016 (UTC) :)
- @Eduardogobi: Please accept my belated obrigado for doing this! Joe Sutherland (WMF) (talk) 17:46, 18 February 2016 (UTC)
Wikipedia Request for collabration
Hello, I am Komal Patel, a young and editor in Wikipedia from India. I was enthusiastic about Wikipedia being 15 year old and so I with my friends are creating a mini conference in our school(https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia_15/Events/Noida). We are talking about guidelines and policies and how you can edit in Wikipedia(for the people who are unfamiliar with it), the benefits which the society and you get and encouraging the younger generation to join the Wikipedia or some of the sister projects.
We(I along with 4 other people and our guide) have done a lot of work upon it but we wanted invite someone to share an experience in Wikimedia. So, I request you to spare 15 minutes to attend our event and suggest us some more ways to make the project better. Other details are given in the event page.
Thanks a lot Komchi (talk) 21:58, 13 January 2016 (UTC)
Wikipedia 15 Stories
Hi JSutherland,
Thanks for creating the page on Meta, but the article I like is not correct. The right one is Place Ramadhan Bey: https://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Place_Ramadhan_Bey . It's the first article of our new project MedinaPedia. Thanks again :) Emnamizouni (talk) 22:03, 24 January 2016 (UTC)
- Thanks Emna, I'll try to get this fixed. Joe Sutherland (WMF) (talk) 10:51, 25 January 2016 (UTC)

Could you please change status here to Published? Although it is late, it would be useful. I asked one admin on .sr but he didn’t do it properly as English message is still being displayed... Thank you. --Obsuser (talk) 17:41, 18 February 2016 (UTC)

published, that is now done. Joe Sutherland (WMF) (talk) 17:44, 18 February 2016 (UTC)- Yes, .sr; however, I still see check mark on Ready and cannot click on Published because I don’t have needed rights. It should be checked on Published. --Obsuser (talk) 18:41, 20 February 2016 (UTC)

German Translations
Hi JSutherland!
Thanks for translating the banner into German - please keep in mind that everything on de-wp is written in the informal form, i.e. "Du" instead of "Sie" and so on. It's a bit jarring when you see the banner and its unusual style ;-) Best, Braveheart (talk) 07:24, 3 June 2016 (UTC)
- Thanks! I simply ported that over from another location on Meta, I should say - unfortunately, I cannot write in German :( I see it is fixed now, and I have published the change! Joe Sutherland (WMF) (talk) 14:04, 3 June 2016 (UTC)
- Hm, that's odd, the formal form shouldn't be used at all, no matter the topic... Braveheart (talk) 13:52, 6 June 2016 (UTC)
- The original translation was located here, if it helps, but is now of course in the banner itself. :) Joe Sutherland (WMF) (talk) 13:55, 6 June 2016 (UTC)

Re: Update from translation plugin
What is this "translation plugin" that you mention? --Nemo 16:08, 3 June 2016 (UTC)
- Hey Nemo_bis. This is the method mediawiki uses for translating the ContralNotice banners. It's done automatically whenever a translation is marked as published (as in, one step about "proofreading") in the translation system, which then allows it to be seen by users on other projects. Hopefully that makes sense? Joe Sutherland (WMF) (talk) 16:12, 3 June 2016 (UTC)
Greek banner
Hello Joe. Thanks for fixing the greek banner at CNBanner:Inspire har-inspirehar-text1/el and CNBanner:Inspire har-inspirehar-text2/el. But please don't use auto-translate, the results are really poor! For Greek translations you can get Kalliope, but I can help too, time permitting. I have extensive experience in user docu/motivational material translation, I have subscribed to the translation team but I rarely receive notifications about translations. If there's anything urgent point it out, otherwise I might start to help a little with Inspire translations at random. As for the banners, I reworked the translations and they're ready for publication now. Cheers! - Badseed (talk) 06:10, 11 June 2016 (UTC)
- @Badseed: I hear you! Sorry. The only reason I used auto-translate there was because there was vandalism in the translations, and it wasn't clear which was the "good" translation. Thanks for clearing it up, though. :) Joe Sutherland (WMF) (talk) 14:59, 11 June 2016 (UTC)
Anche a me all'inizio è capitato proprio questo.
You are free to disagree with me, but I'm confused as to whether you are". --Kenzia (talk) 07:20, 22 June 2016 (UTC)
Inspire campaign - train ambassadors
well, i have not wrapped up a conclusion, but i will be presenting at diversity conference tomorrow [1] [2] here are my slides c:File:Drain_the_swamp_idea_lab_proposal.pdf. i will be facilitating a workshop; if you had any comments i would be happy to include. i will finalize the ask later based on feedback at conference. Please see here. It appears that you scheduled the close of consultation ("15 September: Preparatory consultation period ends") before anyone was really aware that consultation had begun. Would you please consider keeping the dialog open for another 2 to 3 weeks, given that your WMF blog only announced this campaign today? - Thekohser (talk) 13:21, 20 September 2016 (UTC)

Your Romanian is really good!
Thanks for helping with the translation of the licensing update page in Romanian!--Strainu (talk) 21:49, 5 October 2016 (UTC)
- Hey Strainu - thanks! But actually, the Translation extension saves some things that have already been translated before, such as the Terms of Use. So I am just inserting these where the wording has not changed. Thank you however for kickstarting this translation! :) Joe Sutherland (WMF) (talk) 21:51, 5 October 2016 (UTC)

Hacked passwords
Salve mr. Sutherland,
- I use the same password not only on Wikipedia, but on all projects since I have a SUL-account. Luckily I am not an admin (called 'moderator' in nl) or higher.
Greetings & salutations, Klaas `Z4␟` V: 09:52, 14 November 2016 (UTC)
Ref. your cross-project message delivery "Passwords".
Are we talking of a Wikimedia projects in whole, Wikipedia sub-projects, particular Wikipedia projects? Do you have any particular facts for Russian Wikipedia? Do you have some overall estimate numbers of damage? --NeoLexx (talk) 10:33, 14 November 2016 (UTC)
- Hi, User:Neolexx. So far the attacker has primarily targeted english wikipedia admins and accounts at https://wikimediafoundation.org. Of course, since all wikimedia sites use Single-user-login (SUL), an attack against enwiki is just as applicable to ruwiki or any other Wikimedia project. Most of the compromised accounts had been using the same password for a very long time. We are still investigating what happened, but we strongly urge people to change their password if they use the same password on many other sites, or have used the same password for many years. As far as the extent of the damage - so far 11 accounts have been compromised. BWolff (WMF) (talk) 19:28, 14 November 2016 (UTC)

Request for process change - add start and stop dates to WMF-moderated policy discussions
Thanks for moderating Terms of use/Creative Commons 4.0.
I needed the start and stop dates for this talk so I added them. May I request that the WMF change the discussion process to include an infobox or some metadata about the discussions themselves in the future? Data that I would want to see are the following:
- Main landing page
- start and stop dates
- name a point person at the WMF who takes responsibility for the discussion
Maybe other data would be useful. For this CC discussion someone asked me about these things and I was unsure on these points. Blue Rasberry (talk) 20:04, 22 November 2016 (UTC)
- Hey Bluerasberry - thanks for the suggestion. I think it's a great comment and will pass it on to the rest of the Support and Safety team ahead of the next big consultation, whenever that may be. (I also moved the note into the big orange box on the page since it seems to make most sense there, but thanks for adding that - definitely an oversight.) Joe Sutherland (WMF) (talk) 21:09, 22 November 2016 (UTC)
- Can show me how you moved the date to the box? I do not see the discussion date range posted. I see the end date.
- I myself did not see how to post to that orange box. Thanks - I was checking the dates again, and did not see them. Blue Rasberry (talk) 16:29, 30 November 2016 (UTC)
- @Bluerasberry: Sure - removal and addition. It's in a template which in theory allows for it to be translated without duplication on the talkpage. Joe Sutherland (WMF) (talk) 18:27, 30 November 2016 (UTC)
- My intent was for the text to appear at Terms of use/Creative Commons 4.0. I am not seeing it there, despite you changing the template. Is there something weird happening with the template? Blue Rasberry (talk) 23:07, 6 December 2016 (UTC)
- Ah, I see what you mean. That looks to have been a translate thing (specifically, I'd neglected to re-mark it for translation). This is now done, and should be visible. Thanks for the spot! Joe Sutherland (WMF) (talk) 23:22, 6 December 2016 (UTC)
