Welcome to Meta!

edit

Hello Cirt, and welcome to the Wikimedia Meta-Wiki! This website is for coordinating and discussing all Wikimedia projects. You may find it useful to read our policy page. If you are interested in doing translations, visit Meta:Babylon. You can also leave a note on Meta:Babel or Meta:Metapub (please read the instructions at the top of the page before posting there). If you would like, feel free to ask me questions on my talk page. Happy editing!

Welcoming users

edit

Hello,

Welcoming users is nice, but it's not necessary to welcome every single IP and user that's ever edited. Some users, such as User:Wiki killer, are even blocked. It's also flooding recent changes. Thanks. :)--Shanel 06:34, 18 April 2008 (UTC)Reply

{{welcomeip}} is meant to be used if you spot an IP that's doing good work, to encourage them to register an account. Here on Meta a lot of IP editors tend to be people from other projects making one-time edits, or people who have accounts but are just editing logged out (I do sometimes at the library). --Shanel 06:40, 18 April 2008 (UTC)Reply

Hi, Cirt!. Thank you very mcuh for the Welcome. Even now, more than one and a half years in Wikipedia, it is always a pleasure to receive a welcome. I also see you are volunteering to OTRS too. That's always a good new. Regards, --Lucien leGrey ( m | es ) 14:55, 6 August 2008 (UTC)Reply

Taggings

edit

Hi, please don't blank the page when you tag - it means I have to go through the history to see if the tagging is valid (not that your taggings are bad, but just to be sure...) Thanks. Majorly talk 00:14, 27 August 2008 (UTC)Reply

Oh, in those particular cases I blanked those pages because it seemed like non-useful nonsense writings, but I see your point, and won't blank when tagging again. Thank you, Cirt 00:15, 27 August 2008 (UTC)Reply

Categories

edit

Please do not edit the categories on Meta-Wiki translations, they are supposed to be redlinked. When we upload them to the foundationwiki, they'll be blue. :-) Cbrown1023 talk 23:38, 28 August 2008 (UTC)Reply

My apologies - I was unaware of this particular procedure. When doing category work, how will I know which are specifically the categories that are supposed to be redlinked and will turn blue when uploaded to foundationwiki, and which are okay to create categories for? I was basing some of the work off of Special:WantedCategories. Cirt (talk) 23:47, 28 August 2008 (UTC)Reply
If they have "Translation requests/" in them, you probably shouldn't change the categories. Cbrown1023 talk 23:49, 28 August 2008 (UTC)Reply
Okay, duly noted. Thank you! Cirt (talk) 23:49, 28 August 2008 (UTC)Reply
However, don't think that I don't appreciate all the work you're doing to cleanup Meta-Wiki! :-) Cbrown1023 talk 23:56, 28 August 2008 (UTC)Reply

Welcome?

edit

Thank you for the welcome message. While I appreciate the courtesy, I've been registered here since June 2005. KillerChihuahua 00:02, 11 September 2008 (UTC)Reply

Ah, I had just checked the recent contribs to see that you were a positive contributor, and saw that you are a positive contributor on en.wiki and so I thought you could use the welcome. Cheers, Cirt (talk) 00:41, 11 September 2008 (UTC)Reply
And now I find I'm doing what annoys me - cross posting the thread. No need to reply, I didn't mean to make extra work for you! and thank you again for your kind welcome. KillerChihuahua 00:53, 11 September 2008 (UTC)Reply

ArbCom at Russian Wikipedia

edit

Yes, I am willing to help. So, the question is where is your discussion page at ru.wp? (I am able to read Russian, while I am not able to write it; but it means that I am able to participate fully in your process.) --Millosh 05:03, 22 October 2008 (UTC)Reply

Page to post ideas

edit

Hi Cirt.
Is there any place where new ideas for all wiki-pages can/should be posted?
Thanks for helping --D-Kuru 15:55, 5 November 2008 (UTC)Reply

Is this better?

edit

commons:Template:User wikipedia/Administrator vs. commons:Template:User Wikipedia administrator. Maybe the category is not done proper yet? Test it out on the first one, since only I uses it for the moment. Sorry for meddling with the second one. Maybe the administrator default should be Meta and not English Wikipedia since this is Meta? nsaa 23:05, 5 November 2008 (UTC)Reply

Stop it!!

edit

Please can you stop doing that, making cats for individual candidates is a bit silly, it would have been simpler to move all to one cat instead of doing that such as Category:Election candidates 2006 etc using defaultsort..--Cometstyles 10:15, 6 November 2008 (UTC)Reply

Actually, I think categories like Category:Election candidates 2006 are quite useful indeed. They provide further uses - for example for candidates that run in multiple years, there could be categories encompassing those candidates' pages across all those years. And also, this subsection header you chose, effectively yelling at me, is a bit harsh and uncalled for. Cirt (talk) 11:16, 6 November 2008 (UTC)Reply

Lowry says thanks for response

edit

Hello Cirt, Thanks for your response. I'm new and slow on computers and the web. It seems to me wiki has the system all set up to solicit and screen contributors to a new initiative with potential global reach. But its strength (ubiquity) may be its weakness - involving everybody means slow and ineffective decision-making? Could a group be formed thru wiki that promoted for-profit business? Who and how? I've got all the content (parts of the process and sample projects) just need the partners. Any advice would be welcome. The preceding unsigned comment was added by Lowry Redd (talk • contribs) .

You are welcome. Cirt (talk) 17:12, 20 February 2010 (UTC)Reply

Hi. You indicated an interest in supporting The Wikinewsie Group. We plan to announce the time for the board meeting based on greatest potential availability on 28 April. --LauraHale (talk) 04:44, 19 April 2013 (UTC)Reply

Welcoming

edit

Hi Cirt, this IP just made one trolling edit. Please do not welcome such users. Thank you. --MF-W 18:48, 2 August 2013 (UTC)Reply

Ah, I'd looked at edits of those I was welcoming, before I welcomed them! I guess I didn't understand the context of the history of this particular IP to be able to understand that it was a trolling edit in particular. I'll be more careful in the future. I agree with you that it's best not to encourage "trolling", as you put it, either on this site locally or especially crosswiki. Thank you for the heads up, -- Cirt (talk) 19:18, 2 August 2013 (UTC)Reply

You do understand that our agreement wasn't that they should be deleted... for just 3 seconds. I would send you an email about this, but you know what happened last time (hardly a good precedent). ~ DanielTom (talk) 10:37, 1 September 2013 (UTC)Reply

I've already repeatedly stated I will not take further actions with regards to User:DanielTom, and I will respectfully defer to judgment of other admins at the respective local communities about this issue. I hope that is understandable. -- Cirt (talk) 04:29, 2 September 2013 (UTC)Reply
It is understandable. ~ DanielTom (talk) 10:54, 2 September 2013 (UTC)Reply
@DanielTom. You simply don't learn to shut up and leave people alone. Please learn very quickly. No response is necessary, your ability to leave people alone will be sufficient. — billinghurst sDrewth 12:01, 2 September 2013 (UTC)Reply
Bill, you understand maybe 1% (2%?) of what is going on. If you don't have anything productive or intelligent to say, other than "shut up and leave people alone", then maybe you should follow your own advice. I don't have anything further to say here, so your message only causes unneeded drama. (Cirt, feel free to delete my posts.) ~ DanielTom (talk) 12:09, 2 September 2013 (UTC)Reply

Check your email. ~ DanielTom (talk) 18:56, 28 September 2013 (UTC)Reply

I am about to block this user for a week at Meta, including email. They seem unable to understand stop. I will be increasing the block every time they continue to edit on this page, or send you email. — billinghurst sDrewth 23:25, 28 September 2013 (UTC)Reply
Thank you, Billinghurst (talk · contribs). I have said in the past and I continue to restate that I will defer to the judgment of other admins and Checkusers about this matter, and cease involvement myself. Thanks again, -- Cirt (talk) 02:33, 29 September 2013 (UTC)Reply

Superprotect status

edit

Dear Cirt, since you are an administrator on a wiki from which no user participated in this discussion, I'd like to make sure you are aware of some recent events which may alter what the Wikimedia Foundation lets you do on your wiki: Superprotect.

Peteforsyth 09:10, 12 September 2014 (UTC)Reply

Really?

edit

I expect better of you with your experience on wiki, and xwiki adminship. You are better than that to make such scurrilous statements without an evidence-base. Go back, be fair, and think of your community and what it needs, not whether you wish to have a successful prosecution. While you are here though, please read about global locks and their use.  — billinghurst sDrewth 12:25, 28 January 2015 (UTC)Reply

Excuse me? What about the evidence I've already provided? threatening an admin (not himself, not Miszatomic, but admin UDScott) with death: "U SON OF A BITCH U BETTER UNBLOCK ME OR ELSE U AND UR LOVED 1S WILL FACE A PAINFUL DEATH!" and Edit summary: "whoever keeps logging into my account, PLEASE dont stop doing it. My password is zarbon, ok guys?! AAAHHH!!!" DIFF and IP user talk page: created page with "faggot" DIFF. -- Cirt (talk) 13:27, 28 January 2015 (UTC)Reply
You can listen to sage, informed advice or not, your choice. I advise you at this point of time to hold your comments to yourself, and stop attacking people.  — billinghurst sDrewth 13:37, 28 January 2015 (UTC)Reply
Who am I attacking, Billinghurst? I'm definitely trying to listen to your advice. We have an admin confirmed to be socking. Confirmed to have said the statements above. You've asked for evidence. I'm providing evidence. You've asked for community processes. I've started community processes. Please understand, I am indeed listening to your advice and directly taking actions based upon that advice. -- Cirt (talk) 13:43, 28 January 2015 (UTC)Reply
