Fondazione Wikimedia Italiana edit

Merci, Gac

Ok, the page is it:Wikipedia:Fondazione Wikimedia Italia and the main people involved is Frieda, Blakwolf and Gac.

- Blakwolf 06:57, 4 Oct 2004 (UTC)

bonjour. J'ai répondu ici Anthere
Hello, I've completed the unofficial translation of the Wikimedia Foundation bylaws. You can find it here. Ciao, --M/ 16:30, 4 Oct 2004 (UTC)
Ciao Blakwolf 09:33, 7 Oct 2004 (UTC) -
Anthere, if the board needs someone to check over Swedish or Italian versions for content I can volunteer, since I can read both of these now. I can also translate from either of those languages to English (but not the reverse yet). Bisous, Steve (forgot to log in, but it's User:Steverapaport)

re:your message edit

I just wanted to thank you for your message. I was not expecting any explanation on that, I just was seeking for their opinion on the matter. It seems that there is no opinion worth sharing  ;-)

Translating the NL from EN edit

Ugh, I'm not doing a verbatim translation because there are too many things that need to be corrected in the EN version. Most of them are regarding how you express things and how do you use words appropiately. For example, I have noticed that from the text, the reader will be confused between Meta, the Foundation, and Wikimedia, because the foundation is referred to it by different names constantly. You also happen to mention Jimbo as "Jimmy" and then refer to him as "Jimbo" out of nowhere.

Another thing that I notice is on the section "Does the Board record or publish their activities anywhere?"... where you don't emphatize that, although certain talks are not published immediately, once they become official they are properly released to the public. This was inserted into the Spanish translation, but the English version lacks it.

Another concern is the use of the word "grant" in English. Do you mean giving educational grants, receiving research grants, or getting grants of property?

EN NL needs more proofreading. =/

We have a some professional editors in the EN pedia, why not contact them? I can't remember whom exactly, but I know we have them! Hehe. =P

Joseph | Talk 04:49, Sep 27, 2004 (UTC)

Forgot to add, if you need to contact me, do so in my English talk page, I don't visit Meta nor the ES-pedia often. Joseph | Talk 04:50, Sep 27, 2004 (UTC)

I must mention that the two official versions are french and english, because these are the languages the board manage. Neither Ang or I can be certain of the spanish version, so a sentence added to the spanish version is more likely than a sentence removed from the english version. Incidently, I must insist that we do not release the content of all our discussions to the public, even though the result of it it official in the end. If the spanish version says this, there is a problem

I understand, this is always a problem with multiple translated versions. Here is the translation in English of what I wrote in the Spanish version regarding the discussion. Sorry, I don't speak French. >_<

Logs of official reunions are published in Meta and on the website of the foundation. In contrast, private reunions and e-mails sent privately are not published immediately in order to avoid that our contributors take our ideas and speculations as an official politic or as an official decision. However, all final decisions are always published in the foundation media, such as in public mailing lists, the news bulletins of each project, the website of the foundation, and newsletters like this one.

Which is basically what the Board does. And if it doesn't, it should. =P

Yes, I guess we always publish the results of our discussions :-) Anthere

Anther wrote:

Sorry, I do not understand what grants of property is. Could you explain what you mean ? In our case, we mean public and private donations of money, usually for a certain task (but not always).

I will take an example from the movie Patch Adams. In that movie a rich man gives a grant of property to Adams by granting his organization with a land in order to build a hospital there. These type of grants are called "grants of land" or "grants of property". Basically, imagine that IBM grants us a place to build our offices, or that it grants us with a building for a laboratory: "grants of property". I will re-check to see where do you mean monetary grants and where you are referring to grants in general.

I absolutely did not think of such a grant type... Errrr, no, I think we mostly mean monetary grants... Hmmm, I'll ask Jimbo :-) Anthere

By the way, is there a rush to publish the newsletter in September? It still needs more proofreading and to be done in other type of media: such as simple HTML, plaintext, and PDF. I'm currently working on the HTML version: [1] so far, it is printable for single pages such as natural newsletters (use Print Preview and you will see what I mean), but I will have to split other pages like the quaterly reports which is huge.

Do not worry. We mostly wanted it to be done and readable for the press release time. But any publication (pdf, paper...) will only be done when all translations are over, and due proofreading has been done. When newsletters are basically done, they are transferred to wikimedia (see for example http://wikimediafoundation.org/wiki/Wikimedia_Quarto/0409/Fr).

Peace,

Peace on you as well Joseph. Anthere

Arabic Newsletter edit

Hi Anthere, thank you for your kind words :) I enjoyed working on the newsletter, I have the cover to work on now. I was really happy to read your comment on my talk page.

As for Arabic, yeah it goes the opposite way :) Feel free to use my talk pages on Meta or En, or I guess you know how edit pages on Ar now after that post ;)

Keep up the great work. --Ayman

I am glad you enjoyed doing it :-) I enjoyed it as well, just wished I could have done more :-) And I am just delighted it is being done in so many languages, and Ar is important to me. Btw, I sent last week about 20 press release (in french, with link to ar as well) to maroccan press. I need to find the time to give you all the links to these. This is interesting information for ar: editors. My best to you Ayman. Anthere 19:45, 28 Sep 2004 (UTC)

Je vais quand meme me renseigner.

Qu'ils paradent !
Merci pour tes rayons... tes soleils.
Eslios 06:46, 2 Oct 2004 (UTC)

Eslios 17:35, 22 Oct 2004 (UTC)

Fork of ru: edit

Hello.

Some time ago, I heard that ru suffered a fork. I only heard about it on the mediawiki channel, and no where else. Can you tell me what happened ? What was the reason for it  ? Did it damage you a lot in terms of participants ? How do you think we can help ? you may answer me here, or on meta or by mail at anthereATwikimedia.org. Greetings. Anthere 11:04, 5 Окт 2004 (UTC)

Hi, Anthere.
Yes, unfortunately you are right, it happened. As far as I know it happened in 2003, I was not a participant of the project this time. As I heard from ru:User:Drbug the guy who left the project and made his own fork of Wikipedia (http://www.wikiznanie.ru/ ) did not agree with GNU FDL, so he choosed to use BSD DPL, it was the main reason for fork. We tried several times to find any possibilities to merge, but it was fruitless. At the moment they mostly add public domain texts into their branch, this Wikiznanie project is smaller than Russian part of Wikipedia and have not so many participants. I'm not sure that somebody can help, so probably the only thing we can do is waiting. Thanx for your interest. Maximaximax 11:48, 5 Oct 2004 (UTC)

A thesis on Wikipedia edit

Hello, Anthere. A couple of days ago one of the users of Italian Wikipedia (Vala) graduated in sociology at the "Università Cattolica di Milano" with a thesis on wikipiedia, and of course she got the maxiumum of votes. I haven't found any news on similar thesis, and was wondering if this is not only the first time in Italy, but maybe in the world, that Wikipedia is the subject of a thesis. Could it be an interesting news for the next edition of Quarto?. She will publish her thesis on wikibooks or wikisoirce (the one that fits best), possibly with a translation in english.

Regards, Snowdog 10:35, 9 Oct 2004 (UTC)

Hello Anthere,
I've recieved from Vala a presentation of her thesis (1 and 1/2 page). I will translate it in english and send it to you to see if it's ok for an article or if it needs some simplification (especially on the sociological terms). Shold be a good starting point anyway. Regards, Snowdog 17:11, 12 Oct 2004 (UTC)

broken link edit

Halló Anthere, Thanks for the thoughts in your e-mail [Wikitech-l] Projects linking. At your Quicklinks to my pages the link User:Anthere/trail is broken. Regards Gangleri 15:35, 2004 Oct 11 (UTC)

I asked administrator User:Fantasy (see de:Benutzer Diskussion:Fantasy#.C3.84quivalent_zum_three_-_Befehl) to find that page. Regards Gangleri 20:52, 2004 Oct 11 (UTC)
Halló Anthere, that is OK. I worked in w:en:trouble shooting / w:en:troubleshooting / w:en:fault finding / w:en:faultfinding (none of the article exists) before and have seen (from your e-mail) that you are interested in and supporting InterWiki issues too. I have written some remarks about them at User:Gangleri/remarks because I could see some bugs (technical issues), some (additional) documentaion issues (see w:en:User talk:Patrick#InterWiki_links_.2C_m:Interwiki_map) and hope to find someone taking care of organisatorical issues too. Would be happy if you could introduce me / recomend me the raight people.
P.S.: I will meet Fantasy at the local Wikipedia meeting in Munich, Germany in two weeks. Regards Gangleri 22:54, 2004 Oct 11 (UTC)

Introducing/recommanding people working on organisation and interlinks... hmmmmm...tough. Explain to me better one day what you like doing, and I'll think about it :-) Anthere

Admin status on simple:wikipedia edit

Anthere - My request for temporary admin status has expired. I haven't seen any activity from the user who was causing the major problems in about 4 days. I have asked (at simple:Wikipedia:Administrators#Netoholic) for permanent status, but noone has commented either way on it. I will be happy to either step down (from the emergency request) or to keep status until others have commented on my request for permanent status. Let me know what you think is best. -- Netoholic (talk page on simple) 16:09, 19 Oct 2004 (UTC)

Thesis on Wikipedia 2 edit

I've asked Vala to write down a summary, if has time to do it, otherwise I will try to do the work. You can find the thesis here. It's only the first chapter, we will add the rest. Translation in english will be long and complex, we'll try to do our best. Regards, Snowdog.

Small correction edit

Hello,

I translated and expanded your message about me on the hu:administrators page. Would have been helpful to notify me about it (and possibly request translation). Small correction: I am sysop there not because there are too few editors but because there were zero editors, since I translated the interface, created the first 200 or so pages and generally started the hungarian wikipedia, which is obviously impossible without being a sysop. I think it sounds a bit different than "he's sysop because you didn't vote".

If you intend to insert this text to everyone's admin entry who became sysop without votes (like those who were creating a new wikipedia or such) then you should refine it a bit to prevent offending people around, and request translation instead of inserting english/french into national language pages, we sysops are usually a helpful bunch. (And your signature ought to point here or to en: because I don't expect you to come to hu: and read hungarian comments left for you there.) --grin 17:26, 21 Oct 2004 (UTC)

How to say... while staying polite... I hesitate. My only concern is that if you are at least 2 people editing somewhere, if the other does not agree, he can see his opinion matters, and he can come around to ask us for help and request that you be unsysoped.

I apology that I did not take the time to add the link to meta sooner today. Wikipedia was extremely slow, I did not have the time to have lunch and I needed to go back to work, so I just left aside the issue of adding my meta link.

Let me be honest with you. It takes time to make people sysop. In some cases, you have to request that the person give his user page (often, they do not even think of providing it). There after, you need to check the existence of the person, and check if he has not registered about 10 minutes sooner. Then you go hunt for a voting page, in case the project is big enough, so that you ensure not to make people sysop against the wish of his community. Most of the time, you actually have to request that the person create the admin page, explain what is a sysop, put his name on it, add the link here on meta. Many users just assume stewards are just secretary and can do it for them.

I actually bypassed this required procedure for you, as I know you, but, this evening, I think it was not such a good idea to make an exception.

As for message, yes, it is correct, we could ALSO translate it. It would be a great idea. I thank you for having it, as I had just... not thought of it :-) Most of the time, people have the niceness to simply thank us for making them sysop (especially when it is just after a few hours... there was a time in the past it could take days). Most do not expect that we do all the homework on top of it.

I am extremely glad to see that you are obviously volunteering to set up translations in multiples languages (about 50) and I am sure you will do a great job with it. Thanks a lot for your help.

Anthere 17:38, 21 Oct 2004 (UTC)

Hello,
Sometimes I feel that you're the example of a victim of miscommunication. I would like to politely ask you to read slowly, try to understand what's written, and start from the viewpoint that others are actually nice people regardless of what they could be, and their requests are created by using positive energy. (I am really sorry that I don't speak French which would help to prevent lots of misunderstandings.)
Philosophy aside I try to correct your misreadings, but I want to emphasize that I try to do it in a helpful and not a bashing way, so please try to read it that way.
I was first talking about your comment in Hungarian Wikipedia, which suggested that I became sysop because I was sneaky and got the "right" without voting. I told you here that I was sysop because I created hu.wikipedia, and I was the sole user there for a while. I was the only one who could have voted, and I would have voted for me, and not against, for particular personal reasons. Naturally you tried to explain here - after my comment - that your message was left there by mistake, but I had no way of knowing, so I have to point out that it was your mistake, and you should not blame me for reacting on the natural assumption that you know what you're doing.
This is the comment I leave on ALL small projects, after I make someone a sysop. It is not meant to be offending, but entirely matter of factly. It is meant to tell other users that indeed you were not approved as is the usual way on bigger projects, so that they feel free to come to us to complain if the new sysop is problematic. This is a regular procedure. It has two good reasons. The first is that often we make sysop people we absolutely do not know, and what coud just happen is that the person is just very problematic and even a vandal. However, these small projects just need sysops, so we have to take the risk. But we wish that once the projects are bigger, a regular approval procedure is set. Hence the mention made people are made sysop with no votes. It is not meant to be offending, but to notify people a vote might be best later possibly. The second reason is just to protect us, to avoid us being accused to take decisions unilaterally against the local community opinion. If there were indeed some votes going on and opposition, we just cant know, and us sysoping people HERE may appear as unilateral and unhelpful move. It happened once to Angela.
Hence, I just want to insist that the comment I left does not seem offending to me, and that no one ever suggested it was in the past few months.
My comment was completely helpful after that, when I told you that if you make english comments about me anywhere on a non-English wikipedia where I happen to be an obvious native speaker, then you should notify me about this comment, and kindly ask me to translate it to that language I speak, since nobody expects you to speak every possible language. I do not think that this advice of mine was offensive, or even unreasonable, so your hostile reaction was a bit uncalled for.
Okay. But we would like that people provide us with all the necessary information. I do not think we should be expected to try to find your user page in a foreign language when you did not provided it. Again, I provide notices on local project so that people over there are aware of what I did here (which they cant know about). To my opinion, it is enough that information is set on the admin pages, and much more informative to anyone than a notice on a user talk page. However, I agree that it is probably not mentionned in our procedure, so I will add it.
Please give permission to revert your comment on the hu.wikipedia administrators page, so that part could be resolved.
Uh ? Why revert ? I made a mistake in posting on wikipedia instead of wikibooks. It was my mistake, so it is natural I mention it, no ? What do you want to revert ? I am confused.
Second thing is the hu.wikibooks permission, which you kindly - and I believe reasonably - approved based on the phrasing of my request. Since you did not notify me on wikibooks (nor wikipedia) I had no way knowing that. Therefore it is not resonable to take my reaction on your misplaced comment as a ungrateful response to your kind and fast change of rights.
As I already said, I confused wikipedia with wikibooks, which was my mistake. Normally, I should have put my comment on the admin page of wikibooks.
My only real worry is about the revocation of the sysop right. As far as I know there is a policy about revocation of sysop rights, and I have no knowledge of any action against me based on them (as there possibly could not be any, since I wasn't even aware of the rights I am now supposed to have abused). I would like to kindly point out that I am not really happy about the revocation, and I would really like to kindly ask you to consider to reissue it again, since you had no reason to revoke it.
No. The problem is that I realised afterwards, that since you had not set or provided an admin page on wikibooks, the procedure is not followed, and there is no way for me to put the mention on wikibooks. Consequently, in respect with the procedure, I removed the status till such a page is provided and linked from the request for permission page. So, I had a reason to revoke it, and it is one of procedure. This is not meant to be tough on editor, but rather to protect small projects from having a vandal promoted by mistake.
I received here your kind requests about the admins' page and I'll copy the page from hu.Wikipedia, which required translation, and as you may have guessed, I have lots of work to do apart from Wikipedia, just as you do, so I need time to comply with such requests.
Yes, it is just simple to copy the hu:wikipedia to the hu:wikibooks. That is a good way.
In the meantime I'll list myself to be a bureaucrat on the projects I'm on to save you the considerable time of sysopping people, since I want you to be happy and being able to concentrate on less tedious tasks and sysopping people on new wikimedia projects (as I just did on wikibooks for this exact reason, since I can spend that 2 second clicking on "make user sysop" link after a vote, and I actually speak the language which the vote is in).
I would suggest that you look carefully at the two other requests currently on going. This is making us lose our time when people expect us to do all the links and comments. It would be very helpful that people provide all the information in one bunch. You bureaucrat will be indeed very useful.
If you have a question or I left something unclear please talk to me. Don't bypass then revoke and get offended in the meantime, you may misunderstand people, and make them unhappy.
Best wishes, --grin 19:31, 21 Oct 2004 (UTC)
True. Do remember as well that volunteers doing tedious tasks need to be thanked sometimes, and that trying to understand why they did something is a start. I think our integrity also rely in us following procedure, and for wikibooks, the procedure was not correct to me.
My best wishes as well :-) Anthere 20:23, 21 Oct 2004 (UTC)

Grant edit

Sorry to take so long to respond to your message; I was travelling for the last two weeks. I read your proposed grant letter to National Geographic. You make a lot of good points in the letter, by emphazing how the ecoregions project seeks to interweave an ecoregional perspective throughout the Wikipedia's content, and the value of wikipedia as a way to encourage collaborative inquiry and critical thinking, especially for teenagers. My limited experience with foundations suggests that the letter should be shorter, with more specific goals and objectives for the project you are asking them to fund.

Thank you for your intitiative!

Aussi, 12 edits en moyenne par article, 1 000 000 d articles -> 12 000 000 de contributions.

AllyGator (http://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Discussion_Utilisateur:AllyGator, 02/11/04

Arabic Embassy edit

Greetings Anthere,

From what I understood on the Arabic Embassy's page that you created the embassy concept..a great idea. I participate in both the English and Arabic editions, and would like to participate in this meta-effort. However, I am not an administrator in either edition.

You are welcome to help :-) whether an admin or not. Anyway, you can ask to be an admin on time.

To view text in Arabic you need to set the page decoding in the browser to UTF-8, if it is not automatically detected.

alas, I do not have the correct police in my browser...

One question: Do one have to use different log-ins for different editions? And now another account log-in for meta wikimedia? --Alif 17:27, 2004 Nov 7 (UTC)

unfortunately, each time a new login (I must have 40 or so accounts). But this will be fixed soon.
tell me Alif, are you aware of Wikimedia Quarto ? I would love that one of you (you perhaps) participate to it in the international section. Could you ? Do you need to know more about this ? Anthere 21:54, 7 Nov 2004 (UTC)

International Treaty on Plant Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture edit

Hi Anthere

I have had a go at updating the entry on the Treaty. Made a bit of a mess of it at first and you will see numerous corrections to my edits (I must find out what a sandbox is).

Anyway, it is now a bit more up to date. Later this month, it should be updated again as the first meeting of the CGRFA subsequent to the Treaty become law will be held next week.

If you object to my edits and he way I have one about this, please let me know and advise how best I can contribute in future.

I have been following the negotiations since 1993 and intend to continue tracking them as the treaty is implemented. I would be happy to take some responsibility in updating the page, if this helps.

Many thanks

Patrick

Symposium Rotterdam - Agenda in English edit

Hi Angela, Anthere, Jimbo,

I just translated the agenda proposal for the Rotterdam Symposium to English on Wikimedia meetup Rotterdam.

I don't know whether the board members feel invited to prepare their talk in the wiki medium, but in the event, I proposed Wikimedia meetup Rotterdam/Board members talk.
