Arno Lagrange  21:46, 13 Jun 2004 (UTC)

Félicitations, Anthere! I'm sorry my knowledge of French isn't good enough to write much more than the first word in French, but I do want to congratulate you heartily on your election as a Trustee. multilingualism edit

Congratulations from me as well. I write here as I know you a bit from Community Wiki and I feel the best here on this page - Wikipedia is big and a bit harsh when not knowing the way people go here. I do not, I know a buch of small wiki. There are so many people here. I know. Can you Anthere or anybody tell me if there have been experiments on doing multilingual textwork on one page as it is the intention on CommunityWiki:MultilingualExperiment http://www.emacswiki.org/cgi-bin/community/MultilingualExperiment in Wikipedia yet? Is there something like the backgound colors for different languages here? If so, where please, and if not, why not? Sorry for taking the direct way (the TRex is so big and I'm a bit afraid of it. I pretend to be bold when afraid sometimes ;)) MattisManzel 15:13, 16 Jun 2004 (UTC)

Hello Mattis. No, not really. I believe it to be a growing problem on meta, which is the only multilingual wikimedia website really. the closest you may find, is available in Meta:Babel; otherwise, I often use myself mediawiki links, which allow to access pages in different languages. But it is not a good solution at all.
It is a very important point, and I would be very happy that we collaborate together to find other directions to support more languages.
Two users are VERY interested in that topic; I highly suggest that you contact them, and perhaps explain/show them how multilingualism on CommunityWiki is experimented. These are User:Sj and User:ArnoLagrange. That might stir up ideas.
Meta itself is not very big :-) And the good thing is that there are only nice people here :-) Thanks for coming around :-) Anthere 04:33, 17 Jun 2004 (UTC)
Yes some of these ideas (like background colors for diff langs) sounds just lovely. We could certainly do that -- have some kind of explicit note regarding the base language of a page (with the current grey for all languages at once). +sj+ 07:30, 24 Jun 2004 (UTC)
Multilingual communication. I repeated some things there I said here, forgot actually that it had been Meta I wrote and was anwered to. Too many ideas, too many wiki, too many homepages I'm cooking with. Hope you don't mind. Hi +sj+. I'll copy ypour answer to this page to continue the discussion there. thx MattisManzel 17:06, 9 Aug 2004 (UTC)

Hi ant. I created a Category:Wikimedia Foundation. I've only been putting the more official things in it, not the old discussions on what a board should be etc. Thanks for your work on the fees stuff. As I said I was going to do on IRC, I have moved some from there to Membership FAQ. Hope it looks ok to you. Angela 18:29, 17 Jun 2004 (UTC)

Fees/dues edit

First of all, congratulations on your election to the Board, and I'm sorry I wasn't around at the end of the election to congratulate you earlier. Anyway, I'm back now, you asked me to get in touch with you, and since this is Foundation-related, I'm contacting you here as requested on your user page.

By "fees", I assume you mean the issue of membership "dues" (I believe that's the term used in the bylaws). What kind of help would you like on this? During the election campaign, I answered a question from Anthony DiPierro on the subject at en:User:Michael Snow/Candidate statement and discussion#Dues, which I don't know if you've seen. I don't think it's too radically different from the ideas that were discussed on the mailing list. If you like, we can use that as a starting point to brainstorm about this. But I don't know if that addresses the issues you're interested in. Let me know what you want to discuss. --Michael Snow 22:28, 22 Jun 2004 (UTC)

Core departments edit

How glad I am to hear that you were just discussing the same thing... I agree that having/officially deputizing a finance officer would be wise. Morning sun, +sj+ 10:08, 24 Jun 2004 (UTC)

...pour pouvoir se reproduire. That's what we must not forget to do, always.

Don't feel that your hands are tied. The most important thing -- more important than naming any single finance officer -- is to develop a finance department that thinks and writes about our needs, our processes, our channels for communicating with members, outsiders, and other active departments. We will need many more than one person thinking about these things in the near future. +sj+ 21:41, 24 Jun 2004 (UTC)

This an official complaint. edit

This an official complaint.

At first glance, the Wiki concept looked very sympathetic. However, the reality, in French Wikipedia, is far from nice, owing to the mobbing mores in power, there. I would have preferred to have this matter treated with the administrators or fr.wikipedia; Infortunatelly, I have not found any mean to join any of them.

I wish to have my contributions quickly eradicated from fr.wiki, owing to the mobbing mores of this pack. Threats, insults, insinuations, campain of calumnies... They have used so with me, they will do it again against anybody who is not completely at their taste, who is not completely submissive.

I demand to have my paper fr:Produit extérieur, and its images destroyed from the site. Though they pretend a quite another story, it is a matter of morality : I deeply regret to have contributed in anything to such violent, insulting, and rogue pack. By the way, a human audit should not be unnecessary... Otherwise the same causes will produce the same effects, again.

Very regretfully,

Jacques Lavau

(http://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Discussion_Utilisateur:AllyGator)

Wikimedia Subscription Donations edit

Per email partially reproduced below:

>I note on http://wikimediafoundation.org/fundraising that you encourage >recurring donations. I've searched about but found no mention of where >to set up a subscription donation, such as through Paypal. > >I donate through a Paypal subscription to the FreeNetProject on a >monthly basis and would like to set up the same for WikiMedia.

Paypal *says* they have a tool by which a payee may solicit donation amounts. If we could get this on the donation page, I'm sure we'd get a few $5/$10/$20 per-month subscribers, and that would be golden.

What can I do to help? Alan 07 Jul 2004

What we use the money for edit

New website? edit

I see that you now have shell access. Well, congratulations :-)

Thanks. I can edit the sidebar on http://wikimediafoundation.org/ now if there's anything you want changed.

I am sure the solution you found for the foundation website is the best for most people.

What solution? The last thing said in #wikimedia was [13:50] <elian_> bye Anther :-).

As for myself, two of the main reasons I joined Wikipedia and throw so much energy in it, was that I was empowered to do things without having to ask people all the time to help me, and second, that I did not need to learn a complicated language. Funny thing is that these are two reasons we claim Wikipedia is great.

Right, but that means not having the site in HTML. What do you want to do about the main page which is currently HTML. As I said before... [13:43] <Angela> I think at the minimum, the main page should look like a real page, not a wiki. Do you agree with this? Or do you want just a wiki page to be the main page?

So, what do I do now ?

Well, you could think about the following for a start:
  1. Who can edit the official pages?
  2. Who can edit the non-English pages?
  3. Are non-English pages going to be marked unofficial?
  4. Should the main page look nice?
  5. Is that a really leading question?
  6. Should the main page be a wiki page?
  7. Should that wiki page be on meta?
  8. Is there any point to a separate wiki?
  9. Is there any point to life?
  10. Should it all be in HTML?
  11. Should the sidebar be translated?
  12. Should the sidebar be scrapped altogether?
  13. Do you want those damn templates all over the place?
  14. Should we appoint official translators?
  15. Do you want just a few official things in HTML, like the budget?
  16. Do you want nothing in HTML?
  17. Do you want to change your mind and have everything in HTML?
  18. Shall we not have any wiki and send people the information by post instead?
  19. If it's on meta, which pages should be protected?
  20. Did I make up a few questions just to make it a nice round 20?

Angela 16:00, 17 Jul 2004 (UTC)

ROFL. I love you Angel. Okay, I will focus on the content. Make a nice set of subpages HERE. It would be nice that we have a space name actually. Once the content exists, we can always decide who can edit it :-) jk. Seriously, we are making nodes with nothings. I have only 3 weeks left, I will start content in french and english tomorrow, then we'll see. I can't wait 2 months till we agree on the place where it will be hosted :-) ant

Sperrung edit

Hallo Anthere,

ton information me surprend peu.

Homesteading the Noosphere edit

Hi Anthere, since you are moderator of the 'reward for developers' debate, trying to find compromise, I have a suggestion: Have you read this article? Homesteading the Noosphere it is part of a series of essays by Eric Steven Raymond, published together as "The Cathedral and the Bazaar", which achieved canonical status in the open source/hacker movement. If you don't know it, ask Jimbo, he must have read it at least twice :) This essay deals specifically with cultural values within the hacker community and discusses the merits of a 'gift culture'. The author (who is an icon himself partly due to this publication) focusses on a sociological/anthopological perspective. It may not provide a ready made answer to the discussion at hand, but is fun reading and full of insights. Cheers, Erik Zachte 18:38, Jul 28, 2004 (UTC)

Seconded. An active gift culture is excellent, even better than a no-gift culture, and far superior to a bounty culture... +sj+

WMF website edit

Do you know when it will be available to edit? --Daniel Mayer 00:58, 30 Jul 2004 (UTC)

not really :-( Brion said no changes were made and it was fully editable. So, I guess no changes were made with regards to html issues. Hence, I dare not do anything on it. I think I will only put the membership pages on it before leaving. Incidently, I hoped to send the developer poll today on the mailing lists, and finally had not the time to do so. It will probably have to wait saturday. It means that I will only have time to look at all answers after the 25th of august, and set changes to developer pages at that point. Meanwhile, any temporary solution you will think of is good. I would like though, that Tim is also listed with his paypal link along with Brion. ant

I have a bit played with the Mediawikis to adapt the menus (see my user page there to see what I've done) but there is several problems:

  1. the random page is not needed but can't be disabled
  2. there is not enough entry in the menu
  3. if we want scrolldown menus we will need a completely new skin

I suppose that we can move some of the WMF/XXX pages on meta; I haven't done it, I wait your "green light"

Point 1 and 2 seems very easy to solve:

  1. make all or almost all the current entries condiationnal (already the case for "community portal")
  2. create new entries in the template (I think to use unnamed entries like "menu1", "menu2', ...); this can be usefull on others wikis also.
  3. I can easily do this but I don't know if I need approval of the main devs to do this (currently Tim, Brion or gwicke are not there); I'm doing the needed changes at home while waiting.

-- Looxix

Thank you very much Looxix for all this. I will look better this evening. I doubt I will have the opportunity at lunch. I "broke" my chatzilla, and spent my whole evening trying to fix things. At least, my emailer and newsgroups are working again. Later :-) Anthere 06:42, 2 Aug 2004 (UTC)

If you can find a way to remove the random page, then great. However, we need the recent changes. I changed the menu for now; I could not find how to convince membership to go up, to be replaced by contact us. Wellll. Anthere

OK, I've removed the "random page" and replace it by "Contact us". I'm not sure what you want with "Membership". -- Looxix 23:43, 4 Aug 2004 (UTC)

Spreadshirt edit

Hi Anthere,

you asked about the spreadshirt page:

"Regarding spreadshirt.de (http://80.237.204.40/shop.php?sid=10292), may I know who is the seller of these, and who is making the benefits over the sale of these items ? Anthere 21:59, 5 Aug 2004 (UTC)"

The German Wikimedia "Verein" was discussing ways to raise money, and people were interested in T-Shirs and cups and the like. We discussed whether to have them printed ourselves and handle the mailing (a large amount of work and risk) and then we decided to try using one of the German "do-it-yourself" sites. For each item purchased on the site, 1 € goes to the German Wikimedia foundation. Not a lot of money, but a start. So I tried it out, and it actually worked.

Controversial Article: Prem Rawat edit

Hi Anthere,

I'd like to ask for your help in a matter that has been causing some frustration.

Over the past few months, members and ex-members have been attempting to write an article about Prem Rawat aka Guru Maharaj Ji.

This group is recognized by scholars, cult psychologists, and the general media as a cult, in the same category with Scientology and Unification Church. see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_purported_cults#External_Links

Ed Poor and user Zappaz have been heavily involved in editing the article, and IMO, are extremely biazed toward the cult's POV. As you probably are aware, Poor is a practicing member of the Unification Church and Zappaz's edits speak for themselves.

Their involvement continues to frustrate ex-members who have sincerely attempted to make the article accurate.

Could you PLEASE get some people involved that don't have a pro-cult bias? Unless of course, Wikipedia is NOT a mainstream venture and is out to promote cults to the gullible and vulnerable.

I appreciate your efforts to provide an alternative source of information to the general public. I think if you take a look at the article and discussions you will see what I'm talking about.

Thanks, 65.2.116.135 14:53, 18 Aug 2004 (UTC)

Franco-phobic vandalism from Marcus2 edit

You did not indicate on which page you'd like to see this discussion, so I came here: is it OK that I mention this metawiki user talk page as a place to leave notices?
Anyway, note you that I already started some preparation about the symposium in English, i.e. regarding the "categorisation" topic, on en:user:Francis Schonken (see bottom of that page).
For me French is equally OK to understand, but maybe better to continue such discussions in English, maybe after all statistically reaching more people interested in the Rotterdam Symposium, but not speaking Dutch (although not sure about that: it is only my intuition).
Francis

Salut, Anthere!

I¨ve started the translation of the newsletter into Swedish on your request on the Swedish Village Pump. I did drop a note about it on SJ's page but couldn't find yours until now. (Please provide a link on your Swedish user page).
(My mother is French and I'm a French citizen, but, sadly, I can't spell very well in that language. So, here I am writing to you in English, though my prefered language is Swedish. :/ [Did I get the spelling right?])

Hi Anthere, please add Wikimedia site feedback to your watchlist. It is linked from MediaWiki:Loginprompt and MediaWiki:Loginprompt on the WMF site to avoid confusion resulting from people trying to comment on talk pages and finding out they can't. Angela 15:44, 20 Sep 2004 (UTC)

I gave Aphaia an account but not Alno since I have not heard of him. Do you think we need a page where people can add account requests? I expect we might be getting quite a few of them. Angela 18:03, 20 Sep 2004 (UTC)
