QueryEdit

@Ananth (CIS-A2K): Most of the communities requested for the souvenir (juries) and certification for all participants at the discussion in Chennai. Has something been decided about it this time? --Sridhar G (talk) 15:27, 3 September 2019 (UTC)

  • Hello Sridhar G, in Project Tiger 1.0, there was not appreciation or prize(s) for jury members. In Project Tiger 2.0 we may add souvenir for jury members. PT 2.0 has just started, we'll inform you once the process of article review, etc starts. Please feel free to share your suggestion(s). Regards. --Tito (CIS-A2K) (talk) 07:01, 4 September 2019 (UTC)

Thanks Tito (CIS-A2K). --Sridhar G (talk) 12:31, 4 September 2019 (UTC)

ParticipantsEdit

Can anyone from the community participate in the article writing contest or just the members who are provided hardware support? Gitartha.bordoloi (talk) 16:23, 3 September 2019 (UTC)

@Gitartha.bordoloi:The article writing contest is for the entire community. --Ananth (CIS-A2K) (talk) 06:40, 4 September 2019 (UTC)

articlesEdit

Tito (CIS-A2K) Indian language Wikipedia should have page has only the categories. may i write any articles in this category. (e.x) virat kohli under the section of List of National / international Sports winners --Sridhar G (talk) 14:42, 4 September 2019 (UTC)

@Sridhar G: You can suggest the interesting topics at additional items with pan-national interests and based on the community voting we can involve the list/topics in the writing contest. --Ananth (CIS-A2K) (talk) 05:27, 5 September 2019 (UTC)
ok. Sridhar G (talk) 14:19, 6 September 2019 (UTC)
@Tito (CIS-A2K): in a prize section //Wikimedians all over the world are welcome to participate in this initiative and improve the topic list identified. However, only users residing in India will be eligible to receive individual prizes.// if a participant from srilanka who will write most of articles in tamil, will he/she eligible to get a prize amount?--Sridhar G
@Sridhar G:Yes, the winner from Sri Lanka will be able to avail the prizes. We will not be able to provide the cash prize but we will be giving the gift voucher of the same amount.  --Ananth (CIS-A2K) (talk) 04:59, 1 October 2019 (UTC)
@Ananth (CIS-A2K): In this page, it is written that "Editors in Bangladesh can participate in this Contest, but they will not be eligible for individual awards." but in the above comment you said srilankan participate can also receive award, so can i assume that Bangladeshi participant can also received award? Suppose i won this month (top contributor) in Bangla wikipedia. i am from Bangladesh. Am i eligible for individual prize? (any kind of prize will be ok, important thing is am i eligible or not). --আফতাবুজ্জামান (talk) 13:24, 17 October 2019 (UTC)
@আফতাবুজ্জামান: This implies to all the community members who are taking part in the writing contest from SriLanka, Bangladesh and others. --Ananth (CIS-A2K) (talk) 04:57, 18 October 2019 (UTC)

Local topicsEdit

In the header Topics, there are 11 Indic languages. In each language list, there is a option for Local topics for 500 local articles. Kindly inform about the local list final date to submit.--Info-farmer (talk) 10:25, 5 September 2019 (UTC)

@Info-farmer: 22 September 2019 is the last date for the community to prepare the Local topics list. --Ananth (CIS-A2K) (talk) 05:41, 6 September 2019 (UTC)
we, the Tamil wikipedians, furnished the local topics yesterday as a subpage. If you approve earlier, we will do outreach. Thanks in advance.--Info-farmer (talk) 01:54, 23 September 2019 (UTC)
@Info-farmer:This article list should be decided from the respective community. CIS-A2K will be helping the community to create a list but we will not be approving. --Ananth (CIS-A2K) (talk) 06:39, 25 September 2019 (UTC)
Nice. When the contest is going on pls lock all the local topics. otherwise you may face few issues.--Info-farmer (talk) 12:26, 25 September 2019 (UTC)

Bytes columnEdit

@Jayprakash12345:I saw randomly the given topics. some topics are below 9000 bytes, for example en:Periya Veetu Pannakkaran, en:Challan If we add a byte-column, next to English topics, that will be helpful for writers. Is it possible by media wiki or we have to write by the external library like Beautiful soup(python)?--Info-farmer (talk) 01:46, 23 September 2019 (UTC)

Actually i tried to solve by Javascript which give permanent solution. But due to insufficient time , my friend, tshrinivasan wrote this python script + to make input CSV. To get updated byte size, we have to run this script every time. It is a facility for the contributor. A contributor is going to select a article to translate. If the en.article is below 9000 bytes. That article is not good for the contest. But google suggested many small en.articles which are below 9000 bytes. For example, Challan-4,739 bytes https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Challan&action=history so we, ta.wiki, wrote a python script to help the selection.--Info-farmer (talk) 15:36, 27 September 2019 (UTC)

Writing Contest in EnglishEdit

Last year PTWC was also conducted for English language. Whether this year PTWC is conducting for English or not. I have seen a Project page in English but not any fountain link for submitting English articles.-Jinoytommanjaly (talk) 14:34, 9 October 2019 (UTC)

Issue while submitting in FountainEdit

We, the Assamese Wikimedia community, are having some issues while submitting articles in Foundation. For example, we are not able to summit the article as:সোণ মইনা as the Fountain tool says it has only 284 words. But the article clearly has more than 300 words. Can someone please rectify this issue. Looping @Ananth (CIS-A2K): @Babulbaishya: --SlowPhoton (talk) 05:31, 23 October 2019 (UTC)

@SlowPhoton:Thank you for notifying the issue will get back to you soon with the probable solution at the earliest. --Ananth (CIS-A2K) (talk) 12:53, 23 October 2019 (UTC)
SlowPhoton, Ananth (CIS-A2K): Fountain only counts coherent text and does not count characters/words in tables, quotes, lists, footnotes, headers and comments. The article in question includes a long list that is not included into the final calculation. Replacing this list with a coherent paragraph will help. Le Loy 04:42, 24 October 2019 (UTC)

Tools for Tiger projectEdit

Content counterEdit

This content counter user script used in source editing mode & content translation mode to tells the words count and bytes count exluding templates, heading, images, tables, infobox, etc., nearly equivalent to fountain tool. so that user can easily ensure the counts before submitting it to fountain tool and avoid disappointment. New idea and suggestions are also welcomed. (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=14XXyi75J34 Demo in Tamil) To intall, add below lines in your common.js importScriptURI('//ta.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=User:Neechalkaran/contentcounter.js&action=raw&ctype=text/javascript');

Statistics pageEdit

The page shows the Growth pace of every communities and its statistics. Beside it also gives list of user statistics across communities. https://tools.wmflabs.org/neechal/tigerarticle.html -Neechalkaran (talk) 15:14, 27 October 2019 (UTC)

Final date of the contestEdit

Ideally, the contest has to end on 10 January 2020 but due to fountain tool problems, it is extended by one day as informed earlier. However, we would like to know if making 16 January as the end date is a good date. This buffer time is to let interested communities participate or conduct offline events.

SupportEdit

  •   Support, I support the date extension, as it pulls more participation.-Neechalkaran (talk) 12:16, 27 December 2019 (UTC)
  •   Support, I support the date extension, as it pulls more participation and endurance capability of our participants. can we not able to suppoort for seven more days please. ஆறுமுகி (talk) 06:05, 9 January 2020 (UTC)

OpposeEdit

  •   Oppose I strongly oppose this decision.
    1. //This buffer time is to let interested communities participate or conduct offline events.// i welcome your purpose. But, what were they doing in past 91 days?
    2. What is the necessary to extend? Created huge no of articles have been written more than PT1 . isn't enough? --Sridhar G (talk) 06:33, 28 December 2019 (UTC)
  1. Please stick to the plan without frequent revisions. Already a 90 days contest is exhausting. Don't see the need to extend it.--Ravi (talk) 07:23, 28 December 2019 (UTC)
  2. Agree with Ravi above. It's not easy to sustain the enthusiasm for too long. We should not end up burning out of our most enthusiastic editors. Also, it's time our wikis returned to organic content development instead of a focused effort, how much ever good it is. -- Sundar (talk) 09:01, 28 December 2019 (UTC)
  3. Before starting a contest all the rules and regulations must be framed and followed strictly without any exceptions. This is the most professional way of conducting such a big project. Changing of previously agreed rules during the course of time seems to be unprofessional. No excuse seems to be worthy enough to extend the contest date.--கி.மூர்த்தி (talk) 16:35, 28 December 2019 (UTC)
  4. A big NO. A participant before enrolling plans everything in advance and executes them accordingly. It is not advisable to extend the date.--பா.ஜம்புலிங்கம் (talk) 03:44, 29 December 2019 (UTC)
  5. A three months long competition is already long enough. It should not be extended. --Sivakosaran (talk) 12:40, 29 December 2019 (UTC)
  6. Oppose - Balajijagadesh (talk) 17:12, 29 December 2019 (UTC) 17:11, 29 December 2019 (UTC)
  7.   Oppose --Parvathisri (talk) 17:19, 29 December 2019 (UTC)
  8.   Oppose Please stick with original plan. Do not extend. --BALA. RTalk 03:43, 30 December 2019 (UTC)
  9.   Oppose - Srongly. Rules must be framed before the competition. We outreached the time limit. Many contributors are govt officials. They are already facing workload due to localbody elections.--Info-farmer (talk) 00:24, 31 December 2019 (UTC)

Bulk article creation and article qualityEdit

Articles being submitted as part of Project Tiger 2.0 by a few volunteers do not follow guidelines nor have the encyclopedic value. Nonetheless, they are still being submitted and accepted in the fountain tool. In this regard, we would like you to suggest/comment your opinion on this to keep up the spirit of participation alive.
Also see: Wikipedia is not about winning

CommentsEdit

  • As it is foreign language, I can't evaluate the quality. But the definitely those are not manually created as per the whopping numbers. Since there is no restriction for bulk article creation, I agree to accept those articles only when these meet the quality and eligibility in our list. -Neechalkaran (talk) 12:16, 27 December 2019 (UTC)
  •   Oppose My opinion about the enormous number of Essays in a short period indicates some unhealthy practices which is not suitable for a contest like this. We wouldn't able to justify about the quality of the articles created by those Punjabi (Shamuki) Wikipedians--TNSE Mahalingam VNR (talk) 15:15, 27 December 2019 (UTC)
  • How is it possible for a single wikipedian to create or extend 2000 articles with more than 9000 bytes (or) 300 words within a period of 2 months? Analyse, Evaluate and Give a judgement--TNSE Mahalingam VNR (talk) 01:42, 28 December 2019 (UTC)
  • as you said // few volunteers do not follow guidelines nor have the encyclopedic value// everybody can know a man couldn't create more than 2500 articles in 2 months.

if wiki community accept this

  1. It would be thought that they would write only two people as many articles could be written by others.
  2. i assure you, Tamil community will win next time, we can create 10,000 articles in a day.
  3. i suggest to change the name MT 3.O (Machine Tiger)
  4. I have written these articles between my work burdens and pressures. If there is no value for articles, give it to our time.

if you accept those articles please Organize a Guinness record. we ought to praise them. please inform your decision as much as possible. Thank for conducting such an wonderful contest. Sridhar G (talk) 07:10, 28 December 2019 (UTC)

  •   Oppose Allowing Shamukhi Wikipedia in the contest itself doesn't make sense as CIS cannot conduct an event in Pakistan or send prize money to Pakistan. It is also not easy for majority of Shamukhi Wikipedians to visit India for a training event. Only each community can judge the quality of articles created in theie Wikipedia. So, we cannot comment on the quality. If those articles are useful for Shamukhi Wikipedia, I am glad that this contest acted as a spark to create them.
Yes, Wikipedia is not about winning. But, this is a contest with rules, prize, and judges. So, there should be fair competition. Can three people create 2900 articles in 70 days? It is impossible unless a majority of them are just transliterated copy paste from Gurumukhi Wikipedia or the article are junk/poor machine translation. We really do not know. CIS and Shamukhi Wikipedia should give stats in detail about the nature and process of article creation in Shamukhi Wikipedia. Then, all the articles transliterated from Gurumukhi Wikipedia should be disqualified and CIS should arrange to evaluate the quality of translated articles. Only after this the results can be declared. Thanks-Ravi (talk) 07:35, 28 December 2019 (UTC)

How can it be possible to accumulate large number of articles in a limited period of time. Writing 2000 article is Herculous task not possible for mere humans I think. Better check the matter and articles -- —The preceding unsigned comment was added by TNSE ruby tlr (talk)

  • This sort of gaming the system actually makes me wonder if the contest itself is going off rails with respect to its goals. Generally the wiki community has been hesitant about any kind of incentivised editing and this sort of behaviour seems to add weight to the concerns. -- Sundar (talk) 09:07, 28 December 2019 (UTC)
  •   Oppose The purpose of the project Tiger contest is not only increasing the number of articles in each community. The idea behind the contest is inviting new Wikipedian’s to contribute to their community’s development. I think that Shamuki wikipedians do not consider both ideas as they seem to be focusing on only their article count. It renders to be impossible for three users to manually create or translate these many articles in such short time. If project tiger was a machine translation or automated uploading contest, they might be acceptable. These kinds of submissions are demotivating other Wikipedia communities including mine. Hence I am opposing Bulk article creation.--கி.மூர்த்தி (talk) 16:24, 28 December 2019 (UTC)
  • I find it difficult to understand how one user can create 2000+ articles in such a short period. There should be a process to judge the quality/pattern of the articles submitted in Shamuki Wikipedia by some credible Wikipedians and there is an explanation needed how they are created. I kindly request the organizers to find a suitable solution to sort this out. --Sivakosaran (talk) 12:46, 29 December 2019 (UTC)
  • It is unpredictable, a person upload this much of articles in a short period of time. Technical honesty should be verified in order to respect tamil wikipedia in this contest.Sancheevis (talk) 15:10, 29 December 2019 (UTC)
  •   Oppose As It is foreign language, I disagree. It is impossible, one person upload articles and other person judge that articles. I think the second person is fake Id. within one minute they upload 254 and more articles. sure it is not possible by manually create in short time. --Parvathisri (talk) 17:32, 29 December 2019 (UTC)
  •   Oppose Something fishy.Do they manually uploaded enormous articles in short period of time? This contest should be more transparent and more fair. --BALA. RTalk 03:48, 30 December 2019 (UTC)
  •   Oppose I agree with the above comments. I think the language joined after "the start". How you agreed? This competition is mainly to increase contributors of all the languages not for "the numbers". If you conduct separate competition for bots, we are ready.--Info-farmer (talk) 00:41, 31 December 2019 (UTC)
  •   Oppose Some query and suggestions
  1. During Tiger project meet up at Chennai discussion was about checking of articles centrally like number of inter wiki links, citations etc in an automated way. It will be implemented or not.
  2. I think core team should have good communication atleast with two persons from each language community.
  3. Some cut off for a person's upload per week.
  4. I think particular language admins can answer better what are they upto. --Sumita Roy Dutta (talk) 14:24, 3 January 2020 (UTC)
  •   Oppose I am from Bengali Wiki. I was amazed when i saw the number. It is simply not possible. They must be doing this using automated tool or something. I'm also worried about their article quality. My suggestion would be disqualify them. Is not fair that someone using automated tool win the first prize while other working hard go to second. --আফতাবুজ্জামান (talk) 20:22, 6 January 2020 (UTC)
  •   Oppose I think they don't even qualify for this project shahmukhi punjabi is a Pakistani version of Punjabi how it can be indian? I just explored a bit and found they're indeed using automatic tools to produce articles in huge amount they are taking whole article from urdu Wikipedia automatically changing bunch of words and publishing it. I know some urdu I checked some articles and they seem complete copy of their urdu counterpart.

Here is the detail about that tool: https://pnb.wikipedia.org/wiki/%D9%88%DA%A9%DB%8C%D9%BE%DB%8C%DA%88%DB%8C%D8%A7:%D8%A7%D8%B1%D8%AF%D9%88_%D9%BE%D9%86%D8%AC%D8%A7%D8%A8%DB%8C_%D8%AE%D9%88%D8%AF%DA%A9%D8%A7%D8%B1_%D8%AA%D8%B1%D8%AC%D9%85%DB%81

Statistics and timelinesEdit

Hello organizers! I was curious to know about the statistics of the result of the contest and hence came here to ask when it will be ready? Like how many articles were submitted on each wikipedia, how many users participated, how many articles were accepted, etc. Such data will be useful in encouraging content creation in local wikipedias. Am sure non-Indian wikipedias would also be beneficial from this by adopting such contests and maybe giving the right boost after proper analysis of the data. Dharmadhyaksha (talk) 03:21, 15 January 2020 (UTC)

Maybe the page https://tools.wmflabs.org/neechal/tigerarticle.html can be modified to do analysis of results as well @Neechalkaran:. Dharmadhyaksha (talk) 03:24, 15 January 2020 (UTC)

How to challenge the results?Edit

Hello! I don't know whom to ping in this discussion. So will try with few editors like @SuswethaK(CIS-A2K), Nitesh (CIS-A2K), and Ananth (CIS-A2K):.
I have this question of how to challenge the results? I understand that as SuswethaK said above the results would be declared in say 4th week of January. I have challenged some of the results of submission on Marathi Wikipedia. Along with me @Sandesh9822: has done similar questioning on the results declared by juries @आर्या जोशी and QueerEcofeminist:. To initiate the discussion with these two juries we started discussion on local wikipedia's contest page which can be seen here. However both are unresponsive since 13th Jan. Hence am posting here as well and asking guidance to overall organizers as to what should be done ahead? Dharmadhyaksha (talk) 07:02, 17 January 2020 (UTC)

I object to the jury's (@आर्या जोशी and QueerEcofeminist:) evaluation. They have not done justice in the same way. This makes their some evaluation unacceptable. I have asked them some questions about this on mr wikipedia's contest page. --Sandesh9822 (talk) 12:39, 18 January 2020 (UTC)
@Tito (CIS-A2K), Titodutta, SuswethaK(CIS-A2K), Nitesh (CIS-A2K), Ananth (CIS-A2K), and Ananth subray:. Dharmadhyaksha (talk) 08:16, 21 January 2020 (UTC)
@Dharmadhyaksha: Dear sir, I believe "challenge" is not the right word to use here and instead, we can discuss the issue. Please let us know if the jury has given a reason as to why they have not accepted your articles. If so, can you please mention them here?SuswethaK(CIS-A2K) (talk) 14:43, 21 January 2020 (UTC)
Thanks for the ping, Dharmadhyaksha, I fear I won't be able to reply here your article wise doubts as my evaluation on fountain tool does enough of it. So prefer not to repeat the same here. But I would classify your doubts as follows and I think that might answer your most of the questions.
  • What is poorly sourced? - I think you might want to have a look at w:en:WP:RS, where what is well sourced is elaborated. In your articles creations, somehow you have taken this divine three number for references and most of your rejected articles have only three references that too, those three are supporting a section/few statements only. And some articles lack references at all. So those would be rejected according to our rules defined here Usually all the statements, every different statement should have it's own source/reference And Biographies must be well sourced. It's a established rule on most of the wikis. A look at this essay would be helpful in understanding what I want to convey here.
  • What is untranslated? - Most of your articles have wikidata info boxes, which have untranslated contents partial or completely untranslated.
  • I guess these two points make most of your doubts and I have tried to answer that.
Out of all these I have replied and requested some w:mr:Special:Diff/1729876 patience on your questions and doubts but you seems to be in hurry to get replies from us.
And to answer User:Sandesh9822, All of their PT2 submissions have copyright violations and I have mentioned links to the sources from where the content is copied by them. One can easily have a look at [[1]]. On top of it, article histories clearly show that huge text was inserted by Sandesh. And to remind all of you that user:Sandesh9822 is indef blocked on commons, hiwiki and enwiki for socking, copyvios and topic ban. Not to mention that all their PT submission's have not just copyvio but even edits by their socks. So in all I could not accept most of their articles. Infact I want to invite Dharmadhyaksha to clean Sandesh's copyvio, all over mrwikipedia w:mr:सदस्य:QueerEcofeminist/copyviobyसंदेश हिवाळे here. thanks and regards QueerEcofeminist "cite! even if you fight"!!! 1. @QueerEcofeminist: I had asked my doubts on 13th Jan on mr wiki's page. You have not answered them yet there. Hence i had to take them up here.
  2. The rules say "The article must have decent references, doubtful or controversial statements in the article should be provided with the verifiable citation(s)". "Decent" is a vague term and nothing to do with en:WP:RS; which talks about the quality of the reference. If you at all had any minimum references needed as criteria, you should have added them in rules. MrWp has FAs with less than 5 references (eg. mr:अलेक्झांडर द ग्रेट, mr:अजिंठा-वेरुळची लेणी, mr:आयुर्वेद, mr:क्रिकेट_विश्वचषक,_२००७, mr:मेरी कोम, etc.) The articles should be judged based on the quality of other articles on local WP. Also the quantity of references in general has nothing to do with quality of the article. Your statement that "all the statements, every different sentence should have source" is completely wrong.
Additionally, plot section of the film articles do not require references (see en:WP:FILMPLOT.) even for FAs.
Is this minimum references criteria followed on all wikis for this competition?
  3. Comming to untranslated contents of Wikidata; the competition is for the individual wiki and not for wikidata. Also, rules say that "Infobox, templates etc. shall not be counted".
  4. I am fine with patience. But as said its been over a week and you did not bother responding till now. Give me a date, which is before the final results declaration, when i should start questioning your judgement.
  5. Also, the two juries seem to have conflicting views. That is not acceptable at all. Dharmadhyaksha (talk) 06:22, 22 January 2020 (UTC)
@Dharmadhyaksha: As I have said even earlier too, I am just another volunteer like you, So I will take whatever time needed to reply, no matter whether I am active or not, I work on various projects in various capacities, So I would always reply according to my own convenience. When there are deadlines decided by community or projects I am bound to follow them.
  • You pinging all of mrwiki community or here PT people doesn't really mean anything to me. Those pings to whole world are really not needed. When you started with denial to our judgements, Your first ping was to question our validity as judges(when even marks were not given). How one can question the process before it's done? So your intentions were to harass us since before. Then you came here to further the abuse.
  • Remember the contest is about creating articles, so whatever is shown in the article becomes the part of it, no matter images, infoboxes or wikidata(infact creation of wikidata item is part of the content activity!!!)
  • Overall situation of mrwiki content is a different issue and no one has stopped you from improving that. This contest had it's own rules and I will follow those.
  • Juries can have conflicting views that's how we have more than one juries/judges, I see no issues in having conflicting issues.
  • Ideally you should not bother me again, as it's a clear that you are one of the winners, and most of your questions could have solved without creating all this unnecessary fuss. Instead of pinging me again, I would suggest A repetitive reading of PT rules would help you more. Any pings to me now onward would be taken as stalking and harassment as I have replied you enough on fountain, on mrwiki and here. QueerEcofeminist "cite! even if you fight"!!! Cant help if you don't have appetite to take things positively. I have pinged you only because you were irresponsible enough to not answer until now. If you have done your judging you can state so and then we will move onto other community members to assess if that was proper/improper. You also don't have to make fake pretends that pinging is harassing you in any real sense. In fact you are harassing me more by not giving me due credit of my work for last so many days.
I request others to suggest way forward here since QEF has already given their last statement. Dharmadhyaksha (talk) 10:39, 22 January 2020 (UTC)
