This language has been verified as eligible. The language is eligible for a project, which means that the subdomain can be created once there is an active community and a localized interface, as described in the language proposal policy. You can discuss the creation of this language project on this page. Once the criteria are met, the language committee can proceed with the approval and will verify the test project content with a reliable neutral source, such as a professor or expert. If you think the criteria are met, but the project is still waiting for approval, feel free to notify the committee and ask them to consider its approval.A committee member provided the following comment: A valid language with an ISO 639-3 code; native speakers appeared. --Millosh (talk) 23:51, 27 October 2017 (UTC)

- The community needs to develop an active test project; it must remain active until approval (automated statistics, recent changes). It is generally considered active if the analysis lists at least three active, not-grayed-out editors listed in the sections for the previous few months.
- The community needs to complete required MediaWiki interface translations in that language (about localization, translatewiki, check completion).
- The community needs to discuss and complete the settings table below:
What | Value | Example / Explanation |
---|
Proposal | ||
---|---|---|
Language code | kum (SIL, Glottolog) | A valid ISO 639-1 or 639-3 language code, like "fr", "de", "nso", ... |

Project namespace | Википедия | usually the same as the project name |
Project talk namespace | Википедияны гьакъында сёйлешив | "Wikipedia talk" (the discussion namespace of the project namespace) |
Enable uploads | no | Default is "no". Preferably, files should be uploaded to Commons. If you want, you can enable local file uploading, either by any user ("yes") or by administrators only ("admin").
Notes: (1) This setting can be changed afterwards. The setting can only be "yes" or "admin" at approval if the test creates an Exemption Doctrine Policy (EDP) first. (2) Files on Commons can be used on all Wikis. (3) Uploading fair-use images is not allowed on Commons (more info). (4) Localisation to your language may be insufficient on Commons. |
Optional settings | ||
Project logo | File:Wikipedia-logo-v2-kum.svg | This needs to be an SVG image (instructions for logo creation). |
Default project timezone | Europe/Moscow | "Continent/City", e.g. "Europe/Brussels" or "America/Mexico City" (see list of valid timezones) |
Additional namespaces | For example, a Wikisource would need "Page", "Page talk", "Index", "Index talk", "Author", "Author talk". | |

- Support First of all this isn't a vote and this section is named "arguments in favour" so I would like to give some arguments in favour. Kumyk is spoken by a sizeable community that live in an industrialised country and have access to the internet so finding speakers won't be a difficult job. --Donald Trung (Talk 🤳🏻) (My global lock 🔒) (My global unlock 🔓) 13:46, 18 January 2018 (UTC)

Arguments against
edit- Oppose, the incubator is empty, your community is inactive at all though the number of native speakers is imposing (almost 0.5 million people) and literature tradition is quite strong. I think, now we should wait until the community will organizes and will fill the incubator. --LexArt 08:53, 22 April 2011 (UTC)
- the argument is oudated, we've been actively working for the last year, going on --Arsenekoumyk (talk) 22:28, 26 October 2017 (UTC)
- Oppose weak. Weak activity, weak community (and 1 contributor with just 11 edits each month for one year). Цареник Костович (talk) 15:41, 3 June 2020 (UTC)
- Oppose This project has in fact only one native developer, Arsenekoumyk, with supporting some language activists from different parts of the world (thank them for that). But Arsenekoumyk's behavior across Wikimedia Foundation projects speaks for itself. Many of his insults on Russian Wikipedia had to be completely removed from the logs since such chauvinism could not be left even for history. In 2018, without any proofs, he opened a Task in the Fabricator to create a transliteration tool for the Kumyk language. After I wrote, with links to reliable sources, that the Kumyk language is based only on the Cyrillic alphabet, he began to insult me right on this Task page. Finally, it is proven that Arsenekoumyk's account is simply a puppet of another user, which is used to wage edit warrig. For this reason, he is indefinite blocked on the English Wikipedia.
As for the “activity” of 2018, only twice in that year one of the contributors passed the mark of 100 edits per month — PatrickDubois125 in January and Arsenekoumyk in August with 274 edits. From 2020 until now, I have actively followed at least three projects at the Incubator. For example, in the Altai project, for several months, two participants made more than 1000 edits, and sometimes more than 2000! That I call “activity”. I would really want to create a Kumyk Wikipedia, but I see that Arsenekoumyk pursues some of its own political goals from this and not linguistic ones. And unfortunately, I don't see any active community that could now become the basis for the creation of a new Wikipedia. There are some other users (Alibek101010, Erpelili, ArslanKh), but their activity is clearly not enough at the moment.— Soul Train (talk) 13:11, 16 February 2021 (UTC)- I very much doubt you could find any real chauvinistic comment or article edit from me, but you still have an old commitment to fulfill — a promise to make me globally banned for your own vengeance as I dared to oppose your quite pure wiki-admin-judgement. I suggest you take it to your list of wikipedia achievements in 2021, if that's what you're up to, I don't mind.--Arsenekoumyk (talk) 13:46, 16 February 2021 (UTC)
- yet agreed on Opposition to Kumyk wiki going live though, it's absolutely poor in all respects.--Arsenekoumyk (talk) 13:46, 16 February 2021 (UTC)

Hi guys, we're working on the quality of the articles at the moment, also actively translating the interface. There are 2 admins, including myself. We're very determined to open our section of wiki as soon as possible Arsenekoumyk (talk) 22:27, 26 October 2017 (UTC)
- It's definitely eligible. Keep going with good work until you meet the requirements for the approval! --Millosh (talk) 23:59, 27 October 2017 (UTC)
- Hi. You're definitely on the right track. Here's what you need to do now:
- Activity. Keep it up. You need to continue to have at least three editors a month with at least ten edits each. We can't start considering approval until that has been true at least three straight months, and you only have two straight months so far.
- Content. True, there are over 500 pages. But on a brief check of ten random pages in your test, I found ten stubs. Unless at least half of the pages—and preferably more—have reasonably developed content, it will be hard to consider approval. So at this point, focus less on creating new pages and focus more on further developing the pages you already have.
- Interface translation. You need to go to translatewiki.net and start to translate the MediaWiki interface into Kumyk. Go to translatewiki:Support and ask for your language to be activated. Then begin translating the MediaWiki core/most-used message group. StevenJ81 (talk) 13:43, 30 October 2017 (UTC)

Active developing in 2018
editasking to kindly check & comment whether:
- the articles in [category] suit the requirements for going to mainspace. the community is working on improving the quality of all the articles to that standard.
- File:Wikipedia-logo-v2-kum.png is OK
Also I've got questions:
- regarding this https://tools.wmflabs.org/robin/?tool=codelookup&code=kum — are "All core MediaWiki messages" & "Main extensions used by Wikimedia" mandatory when requesting transfer to wiki mainspace?
- what else non-technical part (which is here: https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T201982) shall I do to get Latin version to work also
thanks to all --Arsenekoumyk (talk) 18:54, 21 August 2018 (UTC)
- File:Wikipedia-logo-v2-kum.png is not OK, since Kumyk language based on the Cyrillic alphabet. — Soul Train (talk) 13:20, 16 February 2021 (UTC)
Remarks on scripts
editsmall remarks:
— user Soul_Train is incompetent in what's is based on which alphabet and has his own agenda. latin script was used in 1920s, there are books published in 2000-2010s with modernized latin-based script in Turkey, for instance professor Cetin Pekacars' dictionaries or some books like Kumuk Edebiyeti Antolojisi, also latin-based script is sometimes used by official Kumyk newspaper Yoldash. the problem with Cyrillic-only non-Native speakers in Russia is that they still live with "stalin's view" that peoples are not allowed to choose their own writing script, then they were all forced to use Cyrillic and some still defend that view to seclude and isolate Russian ethnicities.
— online catalogue Ethnologue also mentions resurgence of latin-based in 2010s.
— same goes for Arabic script, it's widely present in Kumyk bibliography cos it was the main writing script and there are Kumyks from Arabic countries. some imams and religious people still use it, despite stalinistic efforts.
— I'm not interested in Kumyk wiki at the moment, but if some native speakers appear and prefer Latin-based, he might be from Turkey and not even know Cyrillic, so please don't allow Soul_Train to suppress and discourage him --Arsenekoumyk (talk) 07:33, 17 February 2021 (UTC)
