- 5 rounds of jury process:
- The review of the initial 16,000+ images was by 36 Commonists and Wikimedians.
- The subsequent rounds were reviewed by a jury of 12 members from Botswana, Nigeria, South Africa, Cameroon, United Kingdom, Canada, Uganda, Netherlands and France. The jury comprised a mix of professional photographers and experience Commonists, from Africa and internationally. This was the first year that previous winners were also invited to be on the jury. - There was a shortlist of 20-images, and from that selection the final choices were made. The winning images and videos can be viewed in detail on the Wiki Loves Africa 2022 Winners page.
- The Prizes have been awarded and the money transferred to award-winners.
Increased Communications coverage edit
- The contest was mentioned on several media platforms, recorded here
- There have been 72,543 page-views (Jan 23) of the Commons' competition landing page.
- Over the 2022, there was an increase of 1,140 new followers on the three main social media platforms. With 78,434 profile impressions and 46,660 people who have viewed content from our Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter. The Instagram profile alone showed a profile reach of 13,299. Our most exciting re-post was twitter love from Craig's List founder, Craig Newmark.
- The Wiki Loves Africa 2022 winners were announced in September. The winners were also featured on WikiAfrica Hour in October.
Unexpected outcome edit
- Bonus: In December 2022, validation of the impact of Wiki Loves Africa on the Commons repository was endorsed with the announcement of the winners of Wikimedia Commons Picture of the Year. An image submitted to Wiki Loves Africa in 2017 won 3rd place in the 2021 Wikimedia Commons Picture of the Year. Read more here.
Community Feedback edit
Both Organising Teams and Participants were consulted extensively about their experience of Wiki Loves Africa 2022 and suggestions as to what could be done to improve future editions. The feedback process is documented here:
- Local organising teams were approached individually for feedback interviews.
- Contest participants were encouraged to take a survey to share their impressions and experiences (report linked on the right).
- In November, the Wiki Loves Africa theme for 2023 was announced as Climate & Weather.
Impact of 2022 contest edit
- 32 Wikimedia communities participated hosting 37 in-person events
- 16,064 media files, per Category:Images from Wiki Loves Africa 2022
- 1,111 competitors entered from 53 countries
- 72% of those competitors were new to Commons
- The 2022 images have since been viewed 9,345,239 by December 2022 across 219 Wikimedia sites
- Current usage of the images stands at 5.7% with 907 distinct images used
- 6 training topics were covered in webinars (where possible in both English and French)
- 12 Office Hours were hosted (6 in English and 6 in French)
Impact of Wiki Loves Africa over 9 years edit
- Over 88,600 images have been entered by 9,269 competitors from up to 55 countries under a free licence (CC-BY-SA)
- 1,23 billion views of Wiki Loves Africa images across 248 Wikimedia projects (since Jan 2017)
- The total page views are of 14.1% or 12,277 media that have been submitted to the contest
- The images entered to Wiki Loves Africa are viewed 27.7 million times each month (Dec 2022)
- 32 Wikimedia communities in 24 countries have hosted over 337 participation events, information sessions and training workshops since 2014;
- A 2017 Wiki Loves Africa’s image was awarded 3rd place, and a second was in the final selection of the 2021 Wikimedia Commons Picture of the Year.
- A Wiki Loves Africa winning image was included in the Journeys Through Our Fragile Heritage exhibition at the UNESCO Headquarters, Paris; and
- Wiki Loves Africa’s ISA Tool won the Multimedia category at the WikiData Awards 2019.
Wiki Loves Women
Focus Group edit
Coaching and support within the 12 women Focus Group
- 12 monthly Working Sessions and 24 bi-weekly office hours were organised during 2022
- A feedback survey was compiled and filled out by Focus Group members. Feedback included:
- “I love how the Focus Group has helped me connect with other African women and learn from them too.”
- “It would be great if we could have more activities leading to contributions on Wiki projects. (wikipedia, wikidata wikiquote) throughout the year outside. sort of homeworks assignment, or challenges, so that we could put into practice some skills and work and exchange outside working sessions. It could be group work or individual work.”
- “I would like to thank Wiki Loves women focus group organizers, they do all they can to keep going on, they provide constructive topics which are really necessary for us!”

- Highest performing organic Inspiring Open post was (unsurprisingly) the launch of episode 2 with Maryana Iskandar (28 March). The post had an organic reach of 1,073, with 55 engagements, 28 reactions, 9 shares and 5 link clicks.
- The launch of episode 4 with Dr Nken Osuigwe (18 May) was a very close second, with a slightly lower organic reach of 1,038, but with much higher engagement: 36 reactions, 8 comments and 10 shares.

WikiAfrica Hour
WikiAfrica Hour is live and ongoing, with a monthly vodcast facilitated by Ceslause with the support of the whole team

- 11 episodes were hosted (22 since launch)
- 39 guests participated (71 since launch)
- 152 Wikimedia and Open movement related news items were shared to the larger community (228 since April 2021). All news can be viewed here.
- 18,712 lifetime views of the WikiAfrica Hour meta page
- There was a 45% increase in viewership (5,082 playlist views) across the Wiki In Africa YouTube channel and a 50% increase in subscribers.

ISA Tool
This tool was launched in 2019. The ISA Tool was developed as a collaboration between Wiki In Africa, Histropedia and the team facilitating the Structured Data on Commons project.
- 2022 activities
- During 2022, Wikimedia Sweden further supported the tool through a research project that aimed to create a fully functional crowdsourcing tool for the semi-automatic tagging of images on Wikimedia Commons.
- Depicts Guidelines: Commons:Depiction guidelines were developed, with lengthy discussions with the community about their official adoption (still pending… and probably for a long time)
- Wiki In Africa Campaigns during 2022 included:
