Grant Approved and Additional Questions for Sharing edit

Dear @Kunokuno,

Thank you for putting in an application. We note that this campaign is built from your previous experience - Shesaid 2021 campaign.

We have reviewed the application and are approving the grant.

We do have a few more questions which we hope you'll take time to share with the wikimedia community, so that future grantees who are putting in a similar project can also learn from your experience.

1) What was your thought process and why did you choose to launch SheSaid campaign through these two wikiprojsects - Wikisambit and Wikikawikaan?

2) Post COVID-19, many wikimedia communities are looking to re-engage their members and conduct more offline activities. From your experience, it feels like you have been able to grow your group of active volunteers and community organisers during this time. Could you share what was your growth approach? What worked and what didn't work?

3) Was social media part of your recruitment strategy? How did you use it to promote your work? Did you use paid advertising? If not, could you provide some practical tips on how you built presence?

We also observed that you will be working with young people specifically aged 18-35. Based on our trends that we are observing, youth-led or youth focused programmes are an emerging trend in the ESEAP region. In your report (i.e. after you have completed your grant), it would be great if you could also share learnings related to working with/ engaging young people.

Thank you.

Answers to questions edit

Hi JChen (WMF),

Thank you for taking time to review this grant request. Our community is now currently on the middle of preparing for the in-person events but we have officially started the campaign through remote editing.

1. The two projects we chose to work on were previously on the incubator status. They now have an official site launched recently on October 10, 2022. We have started working on these projects during the Hatch-A-Wiki rapid grant to move these incubator projects into an independent wiki project. The program ended before it was approved, so we have targeted these incubator projects through the SheSaid Campaign 2021, WPWP 2021, and later on the Art+Feminism 2022. The idea is to focus all those programs to move these projects into its official site. Finally, after four rapid grants, a year, and six months of sustaining the work, it was approved by the Language Committee. For this year's SheSaid Campaign, we'll be working on proofreading the translated quotations and adding quotations that are originally from notable Filipino people.

Here are the two approved Wikiquote projects:

  1. Wikikawikaan
  2. Wikisambit

2. The team has a gradual growth in terms of number, but what we are after is developing a few dedicated volunteers to be community organizers aside from being editors. Edit-a-thons are usually conducted to develop a wikiproject and train these editors on the overall aspect of these projects. After the event, we invited those still interested in being volunteers and engaged them in a program. They were trained on the basics of Wikipedia editing, UCoC, Affiliate organizing, WMF Grant procedures, and other significant things they would, later on, need as they moved forward as leaders. Through this approach, each newbie participant can share their expertise on different aspects of writing, organizing, and other technical skills. Maintaining their engagement is asking them what support they'd need instead of us providing them with what we thought they might need.

3. In our first campaigns, we experimented with using social media for promotion and even paying for higher engagements for online users. It has proven not to be effective in the long run. The volunteers involved in our team have received direct invitations. We built our presence in the WMF community through partnerships with established user groups and by attending their online meetings and programs. We also observed that a lot of these UGs are active on Twitter. We helped share announcements from their communities, and later on, these UGs would also help us share our community updates. We also created posters for important announcements regarding the Wikiprojects we are working on and posted them to specific Wikimedia social media groups like the Wikimedia Asia and Oceania group or the Wikipedia Weekly. Most of the followers we have now are Wikimedians from other parts of the globe. As for the presence in the Philippine community, it's a bit of a struggle since we would need to work on promoting the use of Wiki projects before we could get recognized by people or other organizations.

Yes, we opted to assign a role for young volunteers for our new organizational set-up. We aspire to develop them into leaders who will soon take our positions and manage the organization. We look forward to developing this program so many young leaders can get a chance to work with a user group.

Thank you very much.

Extension for Reporting - Approved edit

Hi JChen (WMF),

This is to seek permission for an extension for submission of the report for this grant. My co-organizers for this program are mostly college students and they have been busy during the first month of semester. I will take over to some of the review of the edit results and evaluations that I've assigned to them. This will be completed in not more than two weeks but just to be sure, I hope you can permit me to extend the submission of the report for a month. Thank you very much for your consideration.

Regards,
