Grants talk:PEG/WCUG Pakistan/Wiki Loves Monuments Pakistan 2014/Report

Thank you for this detailed report! We really appreciate the effort put into this report, and into organizing the competition overall. The photos from Pakistan are incredible -- my personal favorite from last year's competition! We have a few questions/comments on the report and look forward to your responses:

  1. Do you have any lessons learned on trying to get outside funding? This information might be helpful for other groups trying to funding from sources other than WMF.
  2. Do you have an idea of which publicity channels were the most successful in recruiting participants? From the report, it sounds like the combination of all the different methods worked well.
  3. How were the judges selected?
  4. Can you provide more details on why the ceremony and exhibition were not able to be held?
  5. It is common that most WLM participants don't work on improving articles, since they are mostly motivated by and interested in taking photographs. However, some groups have had success organizing in-person editathons where participants add their photos to articles or giving prizes to the participants who adds the most photos to articles/creates the most articles. These are some ideas for next year.
  6. It would be great if you could either endorse or create a Learning Pattern related to this grant.
  7. The amount of comments on the Dawn article is very impressive!
  8. In terms of the remaining funds, here are instructions for returning them to WMF. However, if you plan on applying for another grant in the next month, you can hold on to the funds.

Thanks again, Alex Wang (WMF) (talk) 02:00, 26 May 2015 (UTC)Reply

Thank you for reviewing our grant report and sorry for responding late. I was almost exhausted in May. Anyways now getting back to questions:
  1. We tried to secure sponorship from local organisations but through a middle man (mediator). Unfortunately, some issues cropped up with the mediator and we had to cancel getting those sponorships. I think getting local partnerships is not impossible but not easy either for new organisations/projects such as we. Atleast having contacts who acts as mediator help very much. I hope this answer the question.
  2. Central notice banner work great and press coverage in major newspapers accelerates things further.
  3. Most of the judges were Wikipedia community members and talented photographers. Some were local professional photographers from Pakistan. Here you can learn about our jury in detail.
  4. So as I said, our sponsor left us due to some issues so we had no funds to hold the events. I was able to secure sponsorship from local govt dept (Sindh Tourism) for ceremony/exhibition but the problem was that the winners were from outside Karachi whereas Sindh Dept could only sponsor event inside Karachi where their HQ is located.

Please feel free to ask if there is any thing else. --Saqib (talk) 13:52, 4 June 2015 (UTC)Reply

I will look into the Learning Pattern and try and see what I can contribute - however, it may take me some time as I am busy with work.
We would like to keep the funds and use them to make a calendar for 2016 using WLMP photographs - can we do that or do we need to apply for a new grant for it? Alex Wang (WMF)

Rzafar (talk) 17:23, 9 June 2015 (UTC)Reply

Hi Saqib and Rzafar, I found the table you created about the jury very useful. Do you have any tips for planning the judging process and recruiting jurors that you could share in either of these learning patterns: Recruit contest judges or Selecting winners of a large photo contest?--KHarold (WMF) (talk) 21:10, 7 September 2015 (UTC)Reply
