Douglas Scott

edit

I have been a Wikipedia editor since 2006 and a senior chapter member of Wikimedia South Africa since 2012. I was president of Wikimedia South Africa from 2015 to 2020, helped organised the first WikiIndaba conference and was the lead organiser of Wikimania 2018 in Cape Town. I also currently sit on the WMF Conference Fund committee and am extensively involved in advocacy efforts to make South African copyright law better for Wikipedia editors by adding Freedom of Panorama. In my day job I am a criminologist specialising in the social study of violent crime in urban areas for the Safety Lab. I speak fluent English as well as some Afrikaans and Chinese.

I can contribute my exstensive community experience and commitment to the comittee. This includes my experience as both a grant applicant, a community leader and as a member of a grant awarding committee. I greatly value community health and the sprit of good faith cooperation in growing the Wiki movement in all languages. My experience as a community leader in a country with 9 official languages has given me a strong understanding of the need to support the growth of Wikipedia in languages other than English. To increase impact the committee needs to support people genuinely committed to the open knowledge movement, a strong track record of volunteerism in the Wiki movement is a good indicator of this. We also need to be clear about the need to support mission aligned partners, both with a proven track record and those who have displayed a strong commitment to the open knowledge cause. --Discott (talk)

BamLifa

edit

I have been a Wikipedia editor since 2015 and a co-founder and chair of the greatest User Group in Central Africa since 2018. I have been involved with Wikiconvention Francophone, the greatest conference for French-speaking Wikimedians, in the scholarship team (2017, 2018).

As an experienced community leader, I have noticed how the WMF grant teams are failing to properly support people from the Francophony region and how fellow wikimedians from this region feel marginalized by the fund committees. I know that much has been done as I said recently to the WMF CEO at Wikiindaba 2022 in Kigali, Rwanda; but still regional context is not yet addressed.

Given my broad experience in the Francophony and in the Africa Wikimedia movement in general, I apply here in order to help the MEA committee fix most of the issues it faces concerning marginalized communities in Africa. I speak both English and French. My country of residence is DRCongo. BamLifa (talk) 21:22, 6 March 2023 (UTC)
