Project Goal

edit

Briefly explain what are you trying to accomplish with this project, or what do you expect will change as a result of this grant. Example goals include, "recruit new editors", "add high quality content", or "train existing editors on a specific skill".

We seek to extend Wiki activities to remote areas in the three Northern regions of Ghana.
  • Organise at least 1 edit-a-thon in each school to be visited in each of the regions.
  • Start a Wiki Club in each school we visit.
  • Provide each WikiClub with one USB flash drive containing an offline copy of Wikipedia.

Project Plan

Activities

edit

Tell us how you'll carry out your project. What will you and other organizers spend your time doing?

Organize one training and workshop in each region.
  • Northern region - One training and one edit-a-thon.
  • Upper East - One training and one edit-a-thon.

How will you let others in your community know about your project (please provide links to where relevant communities have been notified of your proposal, and to any other relevant community discussions)? Why are you targeting a specific audience? To get support from community memmbers, notifications have been posted on:

  • Wikimedia Ghana Usergroup mailing list
  • Wikimedians of Africa mailing list
  • Facebook page

What will you have done at the end of your project? How will you follow-up with people that are involved with your project?

  • Participants will be taught how to use talk pages so that, between editathons and after the project, their recents changes will be monitored and feedback posted on their talk pages.
  • Participants will have the benefit of engaging with 2 experienced editors who will be present at the events. These engagements may serve as mentorship opportunities for the new editors to increase their on-wiki skills even after the project ends.

Impact

edit

How will you know if the project is successful and you've met your goals? Please include the following targets and feel free to add more specific to your project:

  1. 10 new editors
  2. 2 Wiki Cubs
  3. 12 new articles
  4. Upload at least 50 pictures to Wikimedia Commons
  5. Increasing readership for the students. Example; provide WikiTaxi or Kiwix offline Wikipedia dumps so they could access free content offline

  •   Support There are areas in the world, entire countries, without a single editor, where our projects are hardly known. But we want to become a truly global movement. There have been many attempts to raise awareness about our projects and about contribution. Some were successful, some were not. I know the engagements of the people involved in this grant proposal and know their dedication. They should be given a chance. I fully endorse this project. --Gereon K. (talk) 20:19, 16 April 2019 (UTC)
  •   Support I feel that outreach in schools is a very effective way to increase awareness of Wikipedia both among students and among their families and friends. The more people know about Wikipedia, the more new editors we will get in the long run. This project has my full endorsement. GastelEtzwane (talk) 22:39, 16 April 2019 (UTC)
  •   Support I strongly endorse this as I think is a good project to expand the reach of Wikimedia Projects to remote areas which needs physical presence of experienced editors to establish the communities with the needed capacity to contribute to Wikimedia Projects.Jadnapac (talk) 10:41, 19 April 2019 (UTC)
  •   Support The impetus of the Twi-translation projekt in Southern and Central Ghana needs to be carried over into further projects in the North of Ghana. I think the goals set in the impact section are very ambitious, sometimes not even met by some projects in the so called Global North. Therefore we should encourage such projects further and not be hindered, even if they don't fullfill short-term metrics. It is the steady drop, that hollows the stone. --Wuselig (talk) 12:59, 19 April 2019 (UTC)
  •   Support Great project, I endorse. TereseB (talk) 11:16, 20 April 2019 (UTC)

  •   Support Good and experience people leading this project, which is completely in line with what we do in other part of the world and a good way to include less covered areas. So obviously I support. Anthere (talk)
  •   SupportThe northern region has been left out in any Wikimedia-related. Its high time we go there. I support this project fully. Shahadusadik (talk) 13:54, 30 April 2019 (UTC)
