Project idea

edit

What is the problem you're trying to solve?

edit

What problem are you trying to solve by doing this project? This problem should be small enough that you expect it to be completely or mostly resolved by the end of this project. Remember to review the tutorial for tips on how to answer this question.

  1. lack of backup or evidence of historical artifacts and facts due to damages for instance the tropical cyclone dineo which was ongoing during the date 7 of February 2017 which affected the country Mozambique, is an example of a disaster loss and also sheer mismanagement may remove the level of accuracy in the history of Botswana.
  2. Inability to globally share the history of Botswana remove vessel the benefit of accessibility of information on the global site for the use by individuals, tourists or researchers with interest in Botswana.

What is your solution to this problem?

edit

For the problem you identified in the previous section, briefly describe your how you would like to address this problem. We recognize that there are many ways to solve a problem. We’d like to understand why you chose this particular solution, and why you think it is worth pursuing. Remember to review the tutorial for tips on how to answer this question.

Soln

edit

Our solution is to promote the heritage/culture of Botswana through multimedia context uploads on Wikimedia commons (freely licensed source) for example,( this is what me and other volunteers did Promotion of Domboshaba site )and source documents on wiki source that will praise the existing or future articles by wikimedian or other writers because the information will be licensed free. The Wikipedia library collection will also benefit indirectly from this cause through our partnership with Botswana Libraries authority. Our main focus is to promote open and free learning of historical contents about the Botswana culture and heritage/tradition. This pilot project will help us to reduce the predisposition or tendency of future losses of the Botswana data through fires and disasters(tropical cyclone dineo) or even sheer mismanagement.

Project goals

edit

What are your goals for this project? Your goals should describe the top two or three benefits that will come out of your project. These should be benefits to the Wikimedia projects or Wikimedia communities. They should not be benefits to you individually. Remember to review the tutorial for tips on how to answer this question.

Our goal is to increase Botswana content on Wikipedia. This will be done by creating a depository for Botswanan content which hitherto were not on Wikipedia and its sister projects which will enhance accessibility of Botswana history and heritage and also make it easier for editors to establish notability of Botswana contents.

  • This will include taking pictures of various museums and mausoleums as well as buildings of historical importance and national monuments.
  • Pictures of artifacts, paintings, wood carvings and metal work in the museums which will be permitted.
  • Maps, city plans, plans of major buildings, etc.
  • Government documents such as agreements, treaties, bonds, etc.

Project impact

edit

How will you know if you have met your goals?

edit

For each of your goals, we’d like you to answer the following questions:

  1. During your project, what will you do to achieve this goal? (These are your outputs.)
  2. Once your project is over, how will it continue to positively impact the Wikimedia community or projects? (These are your outcomes.)

For each of your answers, think about how you will capture this information. Will you capture it with a survey? With a story? Will you measure it with a number? Remember, if you plan to measure a number, you will need to set a numeric target in your proposal (i.e. 45 people, 10 articles, 100 scanned documents). Remember to review the tutorial for tips on how to answer this question.

  1. During your project, what will you do to achieve this goal? (These are your outputs.)

I will collaborate with staff every day, come to the office everyday and make sure employees receive training on wikipedia and its sister projects. I have have a target which will be a weekly target to be reached in order to reach my set goals which will be as follows:

  • To have an estimate 500+ scanned uploaded to Wikimedia commons per month.
  • To improve 50+ articles per month using the images scanned (you may find that there are articles online which needs the images that i will be scanning and upload to commons)
  • I will engage employees during the upload sessions to learn how to contribute to Wikimedia commons.

2 Once your project is over, how will it continue to positively impact the Wikimedia community or projects? (These are your outcomes.)

  • The employees will have the knowledge of how to contribute to Wikipedia and its sister projects and therefore they will continue the good work of improving the content of Botswana, providing free images under the pubic domain for free access.
  • Through the workshops, edit-a-thorns and contests employees will continue to add more information from the national archives Botswana and even other institutions at large.
  • I will try and organise more events that raise awareness about Wikimedia and her sister projects.

Do you have any goals around participation or content?

edit

Are any of your goals related to increasing participation within the Wikimedia movement, or increasing/improving the content on Wikimedia projects? If so, we ask that you look through these three metrics, and include any that are relevant to your project. Please set a numeric target against the metrics, if applicable.

• To at least have 4000+ uploaded files on Wikimedia commons after 6 months
• To at least have 1000+ improved and/or new articles after 6 months, made by GLam employees and other Wikipedians
•At least 15% or more of uploaded files used in new or existing articles

Activities

edit

Tell us how you'll carry out your project. What will you and other organizers spend your time doing? What will you have done at the end of your project? How will you follow-up with people that are involved with your project? Activities will include taking pictures or scanning, if necessary and cataloging Botswanan contents and uploading them onto Wikimedia Commons and Wikisource to ensure accuracy of historical facts and to eliminate possible loss of evidence. In situations where necessary, applicable documents would be digitized before uploading and (or) placed in formats that will directly benefit other Wikimedia Projects such as Wikisource, Wikipedia, Wikidata etc.

Pilot and Feasibility Testing

edit

To ensure that we pursued a good cause and to satisfy our reason for this quest, users Mompati Dikunwane and User:Setsile|Setsile conducted a pilot of the anticipated project with Francistown Archives and records management. Gallery of photos covered under the pilot phase

Resources

edit
  • The internet provided by the archives is not reliable therefore we need to pay for internet.

Budget

edit

How you will use the funds you are requesting? List bullet points for each expense. (You can create a table later if needed.) Don’t forget to include a total amount, and update this amount in the Probox at the top of your page too!

  • The compensation of the Wikipedian in residence to cover my living costs while on duty.
  • We will need the travel money to cover the costs of going from one department to the other to release wikipedia files.

The information below shows the budget for the Wikipedian in residence:

1. Wikipedian in residence compensation for a period of six months (6 months * Unit 950 US dollars) this will include the VAT and all the taxes that one has to pay according to the Botswana unified revenue services.= $5700
2. Traveling costs for about 15 days in 4 towns/4 travels (4 travels * $20 for public transport ticket round trip; 15 days * 80 dollars for hostel plus meals ($60 hostel plus $20 meals) a
Total of $80 + $1200 = $1280

Total amount requested

edit

$1280 + $5700 = $6980 plus $200 for Stationary + $420 Internet
TOTAL = $7750

Community engagement

edit

How will you let others in your community know about your project? Why are you targeting a specific audience? How will you engage the community you’re aiming to serve at various points during your project? Community input and participation helps make projects successful.

Endorsements

edit

Do you think this project should be selected for a Project Grant? Please add your name and rationale for endorsing this project below! (Other constructive feedback is welcome on the discussion page).

  • Endorse I think it's an exciting prospect to have a wikipedian in residence in somewhere like Gabarone in Botswana. One of the most important things wikipedia can do is to get people educating locals in African nations to edit wikipedia and get involved. If the grantee was interested I could potentially design a National Contest for Botswana as part of my own proposal and try to get the National Archives to run it. Dr. Blofeld (talk) 10:15, 12 April 2017 (UTC)
  •   Support Moabi.othapile (talk) 09:31, 22 August 2017 (UTC) it will be a great opportunity to have a WIR in our country to continue with Wikimedia projects.
  •   Support ----- I fully endorse this project Setsile.
  •   Support --- Phetso
  •   Support --- This appears to be a grant worth funding. Good fortune! Barbara (WVS) (talk) 13:16, 26 September 2017 (UTC)
  •   Support, I endorse this project as it will not only encourage local content liberation, but also strengthen the rising community in Botswana. African Hope (talk) 16:28, 9 October 2017 (UTC)
  •   Support this is another ways of increasing African contents on Wikipedia and also provide more visibility. Great project. Olaniyan Olushola (talk) 13:14, 16 October 2017 (UTC)
  •   Support Mompati Dikunwane has proven to be a die-hard goal-getter. With limited or no support, he has done a lot to spread the wikipedia gospel in his community. I think this project will empower him to achieve a lot more. I hereby endorse this project and I'd be happy to support Mompati with this project. Kayusyussuf (talk) 18:10, 16 October 2017 (UTC)
  •   Support I believe as a member of the Wikipedia movement from Africa this kind of projects goes a long way in promoting Wikipedia in Africa and also bridging up the gap in terms of content from Africa. Justice Okai-Allotey (talk) 10:24, 17 October 2017 (UTC)
  •   Support Regards, Krishna Chaitanya Velaga (talkmail) 08:35, 10 March 2018 (UTC)
  • yes Slowking4 (talk) 00:03, 12 March 2018 (UTC)
  •   Support, I endorse this project as content related to Botswana and Mozambique is lacking on Commons. I would like to suggest however that the program also put a metric for number of photographs used on Wikipedia articles. If 50 or more of the pictures are used to illustrate related main space article pages that would be a great success. Discott (talk)
+1 on setting goals as part of metric for this project.--Thuvack (talk) 18:31, 20 March 2018 (UTC)
  •   Support It is good to see initiatives like these. WiR program comes with its challenges in Africa. Would like to see more detail, and commitment from partner institutions e,g who will be covering internet access during the residence, are there any commitments to give back-stage access for other Wikimedians?. Small details that can be worked out, so I am very happy to endorse this proposal and willing to offer assistance to link to GLAM partners we have here in Johannesburg. --Thuvack (talk) 18:30, 20 March 2018 (UTC)
  •   Support A truly interesting project!. Miguu (talk) 21:15, 3 April 2018 (UTC)
