Abstract (in about 300 words)

Introduction

Gender gap is a well known fact in Wikipedia and other projects in Wikipedia movement. The world survey gives the overall ratio of gender gap as 9:1 as the ratio of male to female editors of Wikipedia. A survey conducted in 2010 has indicated that only 13% of Wikipedia editors are female at that time[1]. Many reasons were attributed for this issue[2]. Jimmy Wales admitted that Wikipedia has completely failed to increase female participation to 25% by 2015 which was the target set earlier[3].

The Wikipedia foundation has launched various progresses to bridged the gender gap. "Wiki Women's Collaboration" is one of them. This project is created to encourage women and to help the Wikipedia community to bring in new women editors. A variety of events such as edit-a-thon, interviews and Wikipedia parties were conducted as part of this initiative such as the Art+Feminism Wikipedia edit-a-thon[4].

Our work

As a concrete step to address this gender gap we the girl students of St. Agnes College, Mangaluru conducted 2 theme based edit a-thons in which more than 25 girl students have participated. Both edit-a-thons focused on bridging the gender gap in Kannada Wikipedia. Our aim is to increase the women editors for Kannada Wikipedia as well as increase women related articles in Kannada Wikipedia. Out of two themes first one was about the Women Writers of Coastal Karnataka. In this edit a-thon 40 articles were added by the students. Kannada Wikipedia was not having any information about these writers prior to this edit-a-thon. All the participants were new to Wikipedia. Which means that this edit-a-thon added 25 new women editors to Kannada Wikipedia.

The theme chosen for the second edit-a-thon was about Medicinal and useful plants. Altogether 25 girl students have participated in this edit-a-thon out of which some are from previous edit-a-thon and others were new to Wikipedia. This edit-a-thon resulted in creation and improvement of about 30 articles. About 4-5 editors who became Wikipedians by participating in these edit-a-thons are still continuing editing. This is a good number comparing with the global retention ratio of <3% for outreach activities. Overall the effort has yielded good result in bridging the gender gap in Kannada Wikipedia.  More details with data will be presented at the conference.
