Monthly Meetups with Punjabi Wikimedians edit

What?
Punjabi Wikimedians is a recognized user group of Wikimedians who work on various Wikimedia projects related to the Punjabi language. To make the better understanding about ongoing and upcoming projects it is important to have talks within community. To enhance the growth of community members and for community health, CIS-A2K conducted meetings of the Punjabi wiki community.
When? & Where?

30 May 2021 Google Meet 08 here
30 June 2021 Google Meet 08 here

How?
CIS-A2K conducted these meetups as monthly meetings of the user group. The dates are decided by the discussion on the village pump and messenger group of Punjabi community members. Most of the meetings took place at the end of the month. We notify community members via Google Calendar, Village pump and through the mailing list of Punjabi Wikimedians.
Impact made:

  1. These meetups were helpful for the discussion about event planning. After having discussion in these meetups Punjabi Audiobooks Project has been started. There were also discussions about Wikimedia Foundation elections and participants voted in these elections as well. Apart from this, Edit Wikisource Campaign was also planned via these meetups.

Learning:

  1. Online meetups save time of participants, they don't have to travel to another city. These meetups are also skill sharing platform within community. So, the idea of conducting online meetings was fruitful for the community especially in the of Covid-19 in India.

Content Enrichment Program on Punjabi Wikisource edit

What?
Punjabi Wikisource is an active Punjabi Wiki Project since its starting. To enrich this project with more books, CIS-A2K continued with the content enrichment program coordinated with Punjabi Wikimedians through scanning the rare books from different libraries and different organizations.
When? & Where?
CIS-A2K started working on this project from September 2018. All the books were scanned and uploaded by collecting them from different parts of Punjab. Some of them were in already public domain and they were available on Punjab Digital Library. Our focus in the last year was to upload contemporary literature or books.
How?
CIS-A2K uses Scansnap SV600 scanner for scanning and we have collected books from authors or from authors' relatives by using local contacts. Before the scanning process, we checked out the license of the book and then we did the post-processing after scanning. After editing the book and creating pdf, we have uploaded it on Wikimedia Commons. Most of the books uploaded in the last year contains OTRS permission which was taken from authors by mail. So after that, we have created the Index page of the book on Punjabi Wikisource.
Impact made:

  1. CIS-A2K uploaded 40 books (contains 8,244 pages) on Punjabi Wikisource. The category of these books can be seen here.
  2. 28 out of 40 Punjabi language books were relicensed in the last program year.
  3. Collaboration with Gurbhajan Gill

Learning:

  1. Taking OTRS permission is an important part of relicensing a book. 10 books of 3 authors were deleted from Wikimedia Commons because of communication with authors. Because of Covid-19 it was not possible to meet authors and most of the authors are not use to with email. So, files were deleted because of not having OTRS ticket. So, It will be good to have a tutorial video in local language about how to give OTRS permission for book.

Edit Wikisource Campaign edit

What?
Wikisource is a growing wiki-project in India from the time when it was started in various Indic languages and Punjabi Wikisource is an active Wiki-project from those Indic languages. CIS-A2K organized an Edit Wikisource Campaign to make the contribution more active in the time of pandemic. The event page can be seen here.
When? & Where?
This campaign was happened in April and May 2021 on Punjabi Wikisource. Two online meetups were organized for community regarding this campaign.
How?
This campaign was planned after having discussion with community in the monthly meeting. The idea was shared that community will work together to complete proofreading of books. It was decided that everyone will work on the last 7 days of every month on Punjabi Wikisource on selected books. Proofreading and validation was part of this campaign in the first month and in the second month, Wikidata+Wikisource Integration part was added. The event page was created with detail on local wiki which can be seen here.
Impact made:

  1. 292 pages were proofreaded and 65 pages were validated under this campaign on Punjabi Wikisource.

Learning:

  1. It is better not to plan long term events because other events can clash with these events and long term also effects energy of the participants. Because in this campaign our idea was to run this campaign for six months.

Research:Content Creation on Eastern Punjabi Wikipedia edit

The focus of this research study was to analyse the nature of the content produced on Eastern Punjabi Wikipedia, primarily to understand knowledge gaps in the kind of content here, from the perspective of Punjabi language contributors and users, as well as challenges for creating new content. The methods for the study comprised of semi-structured interviews with five active members of the Punjabi Wikimedians User Group. The research highlighted existing challenges for contributors and users, such as the lack of sufficient and high-quality content about the Punjab region and good online references and inordinate focus on the content translation instead of creating new content. As User:Stalinjeet Brar notes:

“Most of us are focusing on content translation. But the need is content creation. Even the translated articles related to Punjab are not well-maintained articles and most of them are not updated for a long time. We need to work on this.”

The study also offered some recommendations based on the data collected. This research report can be seen here on MetaWiki. The blog on CIS website was also published.
