Imagine a world in which every person has free access
to the sum of all human knowledge. That's what we're doing.

And we need your help.

Help empower the world with free knowledge!

Tax-deductibility of donations - Other donation methods

The Wikimedia Foundation Inc. is a non-profit organization: We are thousands of volunteers across the globe (and 8 paid staff in Florida) working to provide free knowledge to every person in the world.

In the past year, Wikimedia grew by two hundred and fifty percent: Wikipedia is one of the 20 most visited websites in the world now, receiving five percent of all internet traffic. Hundreds of thousands of people wrote and edited, our tireless programmers kept the servers running on a shoestring, and donors (that's you!) kept the wiki pages free of ads.

(Graph to come: breakdown of expenses. 82% program, 13% management, and 5% fundraising.)

As always, everyone can use Our projects free of charge. We distribute Wikipedia, Wiktionary, Wikiquote, Wikibooks, Wikinews, Wikisource, Wikimedia Commons, and many other projects.

Wikimedia runs roughly 250 servers in Amsterdam, Seoul, and Tampa, Florida

Most of our money is spent on hardware. Millions of people read our content; to keep the websites online (and to let them load quickly), we need to maintain roughly 250 servers and buy a huge amount of bandwidth.

Last year, we spent $(insert amount), which included server acquisition and upkeep, rackspace within a colocation center, purchase of domain names, sponsorship of specific software development tasks, staff salaries, and, occasionally, travel expenses. (See Budget/2005 for the latest budget, and meta:Wikimedia servers/hardware orders for details of the hardware we ordered after our last fundraising drive.)

But traffic keeps increasing, and funding is tight. Thanks to our programmers, we can still keep Wikipedia going for much less than comparably popular sites, so we've set a goal for this fundraiser of $1,000,000.

The Wikimedia Foundation has helped pioneer collaborative content creation, and we have a lot of exciting ideas. We want to find new ways for people to work together, new ways to think about writing, photographing, and coding. We're also pursuing grants to fund the packaging and distribution of Wikimedia content to places that do not have access to the Internet.

Every donation can make a big difference.
