Privacy policies are central to the protection of user rights. Our current policy works to this end, but has not been updated since 2008. We want our next privacy policy to reflect the values of the Wikimedia community in the context of today’s web. With that in mind, we present you with our first draft of a new Privacy Policy for the Wikimedia projects.

This first draft was motivated by four principles:

Be clear and concise in language;
Never require contact information, and collect little data otherwise;
Use information only to understand how we can make the sites better for you based on your use and needs; and
Retain data only as long as we need it, and protect it while we hold it.

Your feedback on this draft is important to us. The Wikimedia projects are made by you and for you; your voice is the most important one. We look forward to your active and vital participation in this discussion. Only with your involvement can we create a final draft that truly reflects Wikimedia community values. After the consultation period, we intend to finalize the draft and present it to the WMF Board of Trustees for its consideration.

We have provided translations of the Privacy Policy draft in Arabic, French, German, Japanese, and Spanish to jumpstart review and discussion of the draft. However, we would be grateful to the community for assistance in improving these translations, translating the draft into more languages, and translating the feedback given by others throughout the course of this consultation period.
