edit

If you have questions or remarks with regards to the email you received with the proposal on how to go about appointing a selector, please enter them below this sentence.

Many thanks to Jan-Bart de Vreede for the email and for taking the initiative to help co-ordinate the appointment of a selector for the Western and Northern European Affiliates. I am happy with the approach and timelines outlined. LucyCrompton-Reid (WMUK) (talk) 18:28, 22 September 2021 (UTC)Reply

Thanks, just to be clear: just because I sent the mail does not mean I deserve the credit :) WMAT, WMDE and WMNL enjoy working together on these things :) Jan-Bart (talk) 08:39, 23 September 2021 (UTC) Noted! Thanks to all involved. LucyCrompton-Reid (WMUK) (talk) 12:28, 24 September 2021 (UTC)Reply

Guidance for our Selector

edit

If you want to give our selector certain things which you want her to pay attention to, then this is the place to leave this guidance! Jan-Bart (talk) 12:18, 6 October 2021 (UTC)Reply

Hi all! The negotiations regarding selection criteria is well under way - all of us selectors were asked to put a weight on the criteria we discussed in the group on a scale from 1 to 10. Here is what I would suggest and base my selection of candidates on - I will finalise my list of candidates early next week in time for the next steps of negotiations, so please leave your feedback here or write me until Monday, October 25 --CDG (WMAT staff) (talk) 10:15, 22 October 2021 (UTC)Reply
  • Diversity
    • Gender 10/10: The committee should be made up of at least 50% non-male members
    • Region 8/10: I hope this will be partly solved by the elections but at least 1 representative for each region
  • Movement Governance experience 10/10 (each of the perspectives below should be represented at least once in the committee, as it is crucial to have that first-hand knowledge as a basis for a Charta)
    • (Former) members of the important movement-wide bodies, ideally one from each of them (WMF Board, FDC etc)
    • (Former) affiliate Board Member (ideally from 2 or 3 different types of orgs/sizes)
    • (Former) Affiliate staff
    • (Former) WMF staff
    • Former member of the Roles Responsibilities & Resource Allocation Working Groups
  • External View (10/10)
    • Experiences from like-minded communities (Open Street Map, Creative Commons etc): The Charta needs to lay the foundation for us to become the central infrastructure for free knowledge, for this we need to have the perspective of partners at the table
    • Profound knowledge of / experience with innovative participatory governance models: To build the governance structure of our future, the committee will have to think outside the (Wikimedia) box and what worked well here in past - it’s important to have people present who have experiences with good and bad practices of other communities/orgs/cities/countries
  • Tech experience 6/10 A decentralised approach will have implications on tech governance
  • On-Wiki experience 4/10: I think the number of edits of a person is overestimated in our communities when it comes to valuing them as volunteers and something that usually is a dominant criterion in popular votes (so I believe it will be covered through the election process). It is in the spirit of the Strategy Recommendations to take a broader and more inclusive stance on volunteer roles. This endeavor does particularly profit from community members who shifted their volunteer roles to more organisational roles and/or bring other qualities to the table than edit counts.

As a possible addition (hence no points) for cases where we need to decide between two or more similarly qualified applicants:

  • Teamplayer: People who are collaborative and able to work well in teams, can make compromises etc. This will be hard to evaluate, but one indicator could be behaviour on mailing lists and Wikis - e.g. people who always try to be the loudest or have aggressive negotiation styles are probably not necessarily the optimal candidates.

Selection Process Results

edit

Dear all, as you may have seen on other channels, the following candidates were chosen by the selectors to be part of the Drafting Group:

It was not an easy task - after the leak of the results it became clear that the election process (not unexpectedly) failed miserably in terms of regional representation and that it was on the group of selectors to make amends. Although some candidates from our region ranked high on the long- and shortlist we created in parallel to the elections, we felt we could not provide anymore seats for people from Northern America and Western/Northern/Central or Eastern Europe. Nevertheless, we managed to cover the most important skills, experiences and profiles (see also the criteria I listed above) we wanted to include in the committee. In this sense I believe we could strike a good balance between representation and experience - as far as it is possible with 6 out of 15 seats. I'm looking forward to seeing this group of great Wikimedians at work, building the basis for our future! --CDG (WMAT staff) (talk) 18:01, 3 November 2021 (UTC)Reply

Hi Claudia, thank you so much for your efforts (and that goes for all the selectors). Although the leak was unfortunate I am happy to see that you made the best of the situation and turned it into an opportunity. Jan-Bart (talk) 09:26, 5 November 2021 (UTC)Reply
