Other candidates: Alexandria | London | Torino

Wow, cool offer! Do I understand correctly that most of the costs like accomodation, catering and ICT are fully covered already? (prolly my lack of english that makes it confusing for me) Effeietsanders 10:40, 10 September 2006 (UTC)Reply

yes :-) --Sabine 11:27, 10 September 2006 (UTC)Reply

venue dates? edit

are either/both of the venues available for preconference activities the week before, such as hacking days? if so, which rooms, and would they still be paid for? thanks! -- phoebe 05:18, 14 September 2006 (UTC)Reply

Request passed to partners. Waiting response ASAP --Jollyroger 11:19, 14 September 2006 (UTC)Reply
Ok, cool. Hacking days lasted 2 days in 2005 and 3 days in 2006, so probably seeing if there is availability for at least 3 days before the main conference would be good. -- phoebe 15:38, 14 September 2006 (UTC)Reply
Any more information on venue dates and the availability of rooms for pre-conferences and setup? phoebe 16:16, 18 September 2006 (UTC)Reply
Hacking days will take place a couple of days before the conference and in the same venue where WM will take place. So, if Option 1 is chosen it will presumably be in the Sala Verde (90 seats), if Politecnico is chosen then it will be in one of the 100 seats halls. As for the financial coverage we are negotiating with the sponsors in order to obtain coverage for (at least) part of the costs. --Civvi 12:36, 19 September 2006 (UTC)Reply

How about first aid and medical assistance? edit

As far as I know EU citizens can freely access the Italian medical system if they have a "E111 module" or equivalent. Can we ask our sponsors an insurance for the others? --Paginazero - Ø 13:20, 14 September 2006 (UTC)Reply

Here explains that there's a brand new module called Tessera europea di assicurazione malattia - TEAM (european card of insurance ) for italian european, swiss and SEE(??) DracoRoboter (disclaimer: this user speak a language called sortofenglish, that is only similar to standard English)
yes but "european card" is valid only for UE members. The others--> Model "E111" is enought! Nick1915 17:30, 14 September 2006 (UTC)Reply
Added info about medical services --Jollyroger 22:28, 14 September 2006 (UTC)Reply
Hmmm ... who knows if we could get a basic set of sentences in many languages off the ground that deal with "I have headache - Where can I find a doctor - I have fever - etc. - this could help people to find out at least some basic information and to be able to tell what they have. Btw. there is a poject that deals exactly with this ... just a thought.--Sabine 13:42, 16 September 2006 (UTC)Reply

Questions from the jury edit

Which of the two options? edit

Which of the two options would you suggest is actually more suitable for Wikimania? Angela 23:37, 14 September 2006 (UTC)Reply

Yes, can you make a detailled proposal of what the pros and the cons of each option are and why one or the other would be better, in your opinion, to host Wikimania? Grazie. notafish }<';> 09:52, 15 September 2006 (UTC)Reply

Quick briefing... actually, we think that both solutions are suitable - othewise we'd already have excluded one. If I dare drawing out a difference, IMHO the Lingotto has a better media impact and the Politecnico is more technically oriented. --Paginazero - Ø 20:37, 15 September 2006 (UTC)Reply

IMHO we can prepare a sort of "wiki village" inside Lingotto.--Nick1915 22:55, 15 September 2006 (UTC)Reply
Considering both possibilities - and the effect we need for the Foundation, I would opt for the Lingotto - it transmits more feelings and therefore will have a geater effect on people, also during the conference. --Sabine 12:41, 16 September 2006 (UTC)Reply
Lingotto + Olympic village Politecnico + RUB
pro
  • Minor distance between the conference venue and the accommodations.
  • Pavillion 3 is empty: we can set it up as we prefer, designing the spaces according to the event.
  • According to many, a better media appeal.
  • No need to set up conference rooms and other spaces - the location is wholly ready.
  • Academic institution, more serious.
  • Strong bonds with the local open-source community.
con
  • Pavillion 3 is empty: we need to set it up
  • Greater distance between the conference venue and the accommodations.
  • Academic institution, too much serious?

I think Lingotto+Olympic Village is absolutely the top. But given this plenty of offers, what about holding the hacking days in the Politecnico and Wikimania in Lingotto+OV ? In this way everyone will be happy (Regione Piemonte, Comune di Torino and Politecnico di Torino) --Snowdog 02:38, 17 September 2006 (UTC)Reply

Layout of conference venue in relationship to accomodation edit

Ciao! Is there any possibility that you can provide a rough sketch of how conference venue and accomodation are connected to each other? ie. lay of the land of sorts. Nothing fancy, a hand drawing will do, but just to give a better feel of what is where. Thank you! notafish }<';> 10:14, 15 September 2006 (UTC)Reply

Done for #2 - AFAIK locations for #1 are adjacent to each other. If someone who know better the city can help... --Paginazero - Ø 12:28, 15 September 2006 (UTC)Reply
Done for #1 - Locations for #1 actually are adjacent to each other but the maps don't show the footbridge, I uploaded the pic from satellite. --Civvi 15:43, 15 September 2006 (UTC)Reply

Party location opportunities edit

There is one thing we forgot to mention in the offcial requirements, but that we'd like to know now and that is what are the party locations that we can use for Wikimania. Wikimania usually has two parties, one in a cool and relaxed place for attendees (must hold 250-350 people), one in a quiet and chic place for sponsors and VIP (40-60 people). What locations would be good for that in Torino? Thank you. notafish }<';> 10:32, 15 September 2006 (UTC) PS. this question is being asked to all bidding teams.Reply

Hi Notafish. I think that won't be a problem to find such places in Torino... it is a rich city, so chic places are not missing at all. I am confident that finding a relaxed place for 300 people won't be a problem either: unfortunately it could be difficult to arrange a pre-reservation in so short time, since bidding ends today. We will try to solve this problem ASAP, of course. --Jollyroger 18:12, 15 September 2006 (UTC)Reply
I had a preliminary arrangement with two places in Turin, both fit for both the parties. Owner was very kind and enthusiast of the idea, since he knew wikipedia! --Jollyroger 19:55, 15 September 2006 (UTC)Reply

Community venue edit

One of the most important parts of Wikimania is community. At Wikimania 2005 in Frankfurt, one the most effective community-oriented features was the shared courtyard that was obviously the place to mix (the Village Pump of sorts), and a dedicated room for folks to "hang out" after hours. Wikimania 2006, unfortunately did not quite recapture this dynamic.

What does your bid do to accommodate a social space? Namely:

1) Is there a communal space that is obvious or could be allocated for this function? And how large is it?

2) Can it be a 24 hour space that people can use at any time of the day or night?

3) Are there any innovative features you can put in this space in addition to Wifi access, like computer terminals for people to use, free flowing coffee, cameras or videoconferencing to bring in Wikipedians from around the world, etc?

Thanks very much. -- Fuzheado 04:23, 22 September 2006 (UTC)Reply

Question 1 and 2:
Let's again divide the two options (both with Wi-Fi access):
  • Option 1 - Lingotto: We can dispose of the whole offices area on the first floor, (see: Map) so we can easily allow one of the rooms for "hanging out room", other choice could be to use part of the padiglione 3 where the planned conference rooms will "use" only part of the available space, again another really appealing choice could be to create a hanging out space in the Lingotto, (just near the Lingotto Fiere) which has a very nice hall.
  • Option 2 – Polito: we can allocate a 100 seats rooms, there would be no free-coffe but the polito agreed to open the internal bars (there are a couple) where, like all internal bar in universities, prices are really low. Polito also has an internal court-yard but, considering summer temperatures, it would be more confortable to remain in a room with air conditioning, in case we can have both. Corridors are also freely usable to hang out.
Both options are available only during the day, as for a hang out place in the accommodation site we will arrange them in detail after bidding but we are confident we'll find a nice and suitable solution together with the technical sponsors.
Question 3:
Again, let's pass these requests to the technical sponsors and let's see what they will propose to make the places appealing (for humans and) for geeks ;-) A more complete answer will take a couple of days. --Civvi 10:12, 22 September 2006 (UTC)Reply

Interpreters edit

I just would like to inform you that I started to ask colleagues (well interpreters) if they want to help us on Wikimania 2007 - for now 2 answers within half an hour through only one mailing list. I am not going to ask all of them contemporarily - it could be that I get problems in handling the mail since these days are full of organisational work also outside the wmf projects. --Sabine 13:48, 16 September 2006 (UTC)Reply

Thank You Torino edit

We are glad to share the opportunity with you & the other teams to bid for the Wikimania 2007. Apart from the right to host the conference, we also got a lot of experience from you. We are looking forward to further cooperation with all of you, in order to achieve the ideal of the Wikimedia Foundation in all around the world.

After all, we would say "Thank you" & express our pleasure & honor to share this valuable chance with all of you, again.

Truly,

Wikimania 2007- Taipei Bidding Team. --theodoranian 16:16, 25 September 2006 (UTC)Reply
