Moving averages aka smoothing

Tracked in Phabricator:
Task T147515

A feature request: It would be cool if the tool had an option to smooth the graph, with something like moving averages. Google Ngram Viewer has such an option, where it says "with smoothing of" and "3", where 3 is the default but can be changed. Without the option, we see the weekly up-and-down zig-zag which is more of a noise than signal. --Dan Polansky (talk) 10:11, 4 October 2016 (UTC)

@Dan Polansky: In the "Settings" under "Chart preferences", try the "Use Bézier curve on line charts" option. Not sure if this does what you're after, but it does smooth the lines of the chart, so to speak MusikAnimal (WMF) (talk) 17:12, 4 October 2016 (UTC)
@MusikAnimal (WMF): Thank you. I tried the setting you mention but it does not help. I am viewing a year's data and I still see all the weekly up-and-down zig-zags. For reference, I am trying this Wikibooks report. In April 2016, the high data points are about 5 500 while the low data points are about 3 300. With good smoothing, the contrast between the mentioned high and low data points would disappear, and I would not even notice anything going on on a weekly basis. --Dan Polansky (talk) 20:04, 5 October 2016 (UTC)
Got it! Apologies, I'm a web developer and not incredibly savvy with analytics/statistics :) I think we could compute and overlay a moving average on top of the data. I've filed at ticket at phab:T147515. Thanks for the recommendation! MusikAnimal (WMF) (talk) 20:51, 5 October 2016 (UTC)

Changing numbers on sw.wikipedia.org?

I noticed that recorded view numbers have varied later on sw.wikipedia.org. In September I was surprised to see that the article sw.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tetemeko_la_ardhi had thousands of views which is a lot on that wiki.

When I look it up now Pageviews Analysis indicates only 535 views for all of September, Topviews Analysis shows 527.

For another surprisingly highly viewed entry sw.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kupatwa_kwa_jua Pageviews Analysis shows today 9.982 views for September, but Topviews only shows 759. AND the interesting thing is when I click on that figure in Topviews I get a new tab in Pageviews which also shows 759! So now I have 2 tabs side by side, showing Pageviews Analysis for the same entry "kupatwa kwa jua" with different numbers.

Any explanation? Kipala (talk) 09:00, 17 October 2016 (UTC)

And I tried Tetemeko la ardhi once more, now I get Totals: 6.445 (215/day) for September, but if use the other access via topviews it is only 527 for the whole month. Also here I have 2 PAgeviews tabs side by side, same entry, same month, different numbers. Kipala (talk) 09:17, 17 October 2016 (UTC)
Tested just for fun on de.wikipedia for entry "Erdbeben". Similar discrepancy. https://tools.wmflabs.org/pageviews/?project=de.wikipedia.org&platform=all-access&agent=user&start=2016-09-01&end=2016-09-30&pages=Erdbeben shows 15,340 views in September, access the other way via https://tools.wmflabs.org/pageviews/?project=de.wikipedia.org&platform=desktop&agent=user&start=2016-09-01&end=2016-09-30&pages=Erdbeben round shows Totals: 8.865 (296/day). I guess you could repeat it on all other wikis. So what is right? Both wrong? Take the median value? Or just the one that looks better? Kipala (talk) 09:25, 17 October 2016 (UTC)
So once more Old Churchill was right "I believe only in those statistics I forged myself"?Kipala (talk) 09:26, 17 October 2016 (UTC)
@Kipala: I believe the discrepancy in your case is because you have different platforms selected. In the first link for Erdbeben, "All" platforms are selected, showing at total of 15,340 views. In the second link only Desktop is shown and hence the views are much lower. The same options are available in Topviews, so try changing it to "All" platforms and compare the views. They should be same. Hope this helps! MusikAnimal (WMF) (talk) 18:26, 17 October 2016 (UTC)
Yes, I think that's it. I am glad that there is no flaw in your script. Thanks! 21:13, 17 October 2016 (UTC)

Произошла ошибка во время обработки Pageviews API - Not found.

[1]; other pages work. Gryllida 19:45, 24 October 2016 (UTC)

@Gryllida: The page was recently moved, so the data has not been populated in the API yet. It usually takes around 24 hours. At some point we hope to show data for previous locations of the page, but this is not easy to do. You can follow phab:T141332 for updates. Sorry! MusikAnimal (WMF) (talk) 20:42, 24 October 2016 (UTC)

Is the raw data available?

I'm a computer science professor at the University of Pennsylvania. Several of my students would like to do a senior design project using the wikipedia page view statistics. Can you tell me whether the raw data that you used for the Pageview Analysis tool is available? I see that the data up to 2016 is available from stats.grok.se. Is there a similar source of data for after Jan 2016?

I found this page: https://dumps.wikimedia.org/other/pagecounts-raw/2016/ But it looks like the most current date is 2016-08, which is two months old as I am writing this. — The preceding unsigned comment was added by 158.130.174.97 (talk)

Since May 2015, we have been using a new pageview definition. The raw dumps for this can be found at dumps.wikimedia.org/other/pageviews. See also the documentation on how to parse it. For data older than May 2015 you will have to refer to the older dumps that you found, but note the numbers will differ greatly from that of the new definition MusikAnimal (WMF) (talk) 19:48, 26 October 2016 (UTC)

Show all redirects by default

I am getting completely lost with all this. I personally could forgo all the extra stuff in Pageviews Analysis 2.0 BETA. It is obvious to me that an article by default should include all redirects in the same displayed bar. To capture all views of an article page people would expect redirects to be included by default as they get you to the same page anyway. It gives you a proper count of views to that page. How you got there is a secondary issue. Sure you could have a checkbox that you could use to deselect including redirects but I think most people would expect redirects included by default. --Penbat (talk) 21:24, 27 October 2016 (UTC)

@Penbat: Thanks for the feedback! Unfortunately, given the way the pageviews API works, it is not feasible to include all redirects by default. In fact, this sometimes is not desirable, such as when individual redirects are being discussed. There is however a separate tool for this functionality that exists right now at toollabs:redirectviews. To get there, click "Redirects" from the chart legend. The BETA version is more about introducing editing statistics, redoing the layout entirely to make it easier to do article comparisons, and put focus on the visualization itself. Hope this helps! MusikAnimal (WMF) (talk) 21:31, 27 October 2016 (UTC)
Well, this is only partially true. For some pages where there are but a few redirects, it's definitely feasible to include them by default. For others where there are hundreds, and you are comparing say, 10 pages and all of their redirects, it's going to have a very noticeable effect on performance. There is some special logic I could include to conditionally include redirects, but that really complicates the code and the user experience. There is talk to address the issue in the API directly, which is the correct way to do it. When that happens I believe all will be happy :) Follow phab:T121912 for updates (unfortunately not much progress since the task was created) MusikAnimal (WMF) (talk) 21:39, 27 October 2016 (UTC)

BETA version: Checkboxes don't work

  Fixed

Oh, goody! A new tool version—as if I didn't spend enough time playing with charts... Ahem. I came here to say that the checkboxes are unresponsive (logarithmic and start at zero options). I'm using whatever Mobile Safari comes with iOS 10, on an iPad. Gorthian (talk) 21:59, 27 October 2016 (UTC)

Hmm okay, will try to reproduce, haven't had any luck yet. Your report did reveal an unrelated bug, though! So that is good :) Thanks, MusikAnimal (WMF) (talk) 22:14, 27 October 2016 (UTC)
I think we did have the same issue, and it should now be fixed :) Thanks for the report! MusikAnimal (WMF) (talk) 05:03, 28 October 2016 (UTC)

BETA version: Dates at the bottom are off

  Fixed

I just tried the new Beta site and immediately noticed an issue, viz. the initial dates that came up at the bottom of the first chart were ten days off, showing Oct 27 as Oct 17 etc. Til Eulenspiegel (talk) 13:39, 28 October 2016 (UTC)

@Til Eulenspiegel: Could you provide a link to where it is broken? I am not able to reproduce the issue. Thanks, MusikAnimal (WMF) (talk) 15:34, 28 October 2016 (UTC)

OK, first here is the old version of PV for an article first created Oct 19 and has had 210 views total as of 10/27. Dates are shown correctly.

https://tools.wmflabs.org/pageviews/?project=am.wikipedia.org&platform=all-access&agent=user&range=latest-10&pages=%E1%8B%A8%E1%88%8B%E1%89%B2%E1%8A%95_%E1%8A%A0%E1%88%8D%E1%8D%8B%E1%89%A4%E1%89%B5

Now I tried the same article on the new PV Beta, it still shows 210 views total, but occurring between Oct 8 and 16 and zero since then, which is wrong, as it was created on the 19th.

https://tools.wmflabs.org/pageviews-test/?project=am.wikipedia.org&platform=all-access&agent=user&range=latest-20&pages=%E1%8B%A8%E1%88%8B%E1%89%B2%E1%8A%95_%E1%8A%A0%E1%88%8D%E1%8D%8B%E1%89%A4%E1%89%B5

I have no idea why, but it seems to be actually 11 days off, not just 10. Regards, Til Eulenspiegel (talk) 15:57, 28 October 2016 (UTC)

Ouch, what a nasty bug! Will fix. Thank you! MusikAnimal (WMF) (talk) 17:01, 28 October 2016 (UTC)
@Til Eulenspiegel: Should be fixed :) Let me know if you see anything else that's wonky, and thanks for your help with testing! MusikAnimal (WMF) (talk) 20:10, 28 October 2016 (UTC)

Page name look-up working erratically for redirects

I tried to get page view statistics for Direct3D 9.1, Direct3D 9.2, and Direct3D 9.3, all of which are redirects to Direct3D#Feature levels, but the former is not looked up correctly. If I type the full name in the Pages field, the only suggestion shown in the drop-down list is Direct3D, and when I enable "Autocompletion including redirects", the name is found but then it gives me an "Error querying Pageviews API - Not found". The latter two work like a charm though.

Similar problem affects Direct3D 9, Direct3D 9.0, DirectX 9.1, DirectX 9.2, DirectX 9.3, DirectX 10, DirectX 11, DirectX 12, Direct3D 10, Direct3D 10.0 Direct3D 10.1, Direct3D 11, Direct3D 11.1, Direct3D 11.2, and Direct3D 11.3. I'm using Chrome 54, Firefox 49 and Microsoft Edge in Windows 10 version 1507 (10.0.14393.351).

BTW supplying the URL parameter pages does not work in Microsoft Edge - which breaks the hyperlink from Wikipedia Page information: https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Direct3D_9.1&action=info --DmitryKo (talk) 00:47, 30 October 2016 (UTC)

@DmitryKo: Hey! Just as you've found you do need to adjust the search method to find redirects via the search. For new pages, you might see "Pageviews API - not found" as the data has not been populated to the Pageviews API yet. However I see Direct3D 9.1 was created in November 2012, so my guess is – believe it or not – there have been no pageviews to this redirect since the API was introduced in July 2015. I bet if you check back tomorrow, the pageviews from us both will show up. I see that all of the pages you mentioned are redirects. Have you tried Redirect Views? Check the results for Direct3D and DirectX :) Finally, I will investigate the issue with Microsoft Edge. Thanks! MusikAnimal (WMF) (talk) 01:31, 30 October 2016 (UTC)

Beta not working at all

  Fixed

Using Firefox 43.0. Couldn't click off sample Google stats, couldn't enter page to be analyzed. Maybe this is just a temporary malfunction? Akhooha (talk) 15:52, 28 October 2016 (UTC)

@Akhooha: Is it working for you now? There was some Tool Labs maintenance going on earlier that was causing some issues. I tried it on a similar version of Firefox and it is working for me. Also, are you using Windows or Mac? MusikAnimal (WMF) (talk) 17:06, 28 October 2016 (UTC)
Thanks for your quick reply. I'm using Windows XP Pro. It works on Chrome Version 45.0.2454.93 m but is still not working on Firefox 43.0.... --Akhooha (talk) 21:56, 28 October 2016 (UTC)
@Akhooha: Should be fixed! Thank you for the report MusikAnimal (WMF) (talk) 21:19, 29 October 2016 (UTC)
Yes, it's fixed. Thank you! Now that I'm looking at the Beta version, I notice that although some new features have been added like Topviews and Massviews, it appears that the option for "Latest 10 20 30 60 90 days" is gone and that it is defaulted to the last 20 days.... there just wasn't enough perceived demand to change the range except through the calendar option? Thanks again for fixing the Firefox problem. Also, while the view total is given for the range, it's no longer handily averaged out.... --Akhooha (talk) 00:34, 30 October 2016 (UTC)
@Akhooha: This is very helpful feedback! First off, Topviews, Massviews, etc have always been there, but the links to them were at the bottom of the page. People did not notice them (you being one of them, I take it), so I've moved them to the top to make it more apparent. Glad to hear that's working! :)
Next, the "Latest 10 20..." links were there only for familiarity of those who used the old stats.grok.se. That evidently led people to believe it was the only way to change the range, so I wanted to do away with that in favour of the date picker. The date picker includes more useful options like "last month", "this year", etc. If demand is high enough I can restore some of the "latest" links.
Finally, I take it your screen is "medium" sized, and you don't see the Summary column on the right? In addition to the daily average, it shows lots of info, such as the number of edits and editors, page watchers, etc. I am working on a way to expose this information to users with smaller screens. I will get back to you! MusikAnimal (WMF) (talk) 01:19, 30 October 2016 (UTC)
Thanks again for the quick reply. I've adjusted the screen size, and I'm now able to see the column on the right. Thank you. Akhooha (talk) 16:47, 30 October 2016 (UTC)

Beta: Number of watchers not always reported

  Fixed

I tested the new Pageview analysis page with the following queries added one at a time (see screen capture image). For the first three queries, there was no 'number of watchers' reported. When I added the query 'Parkinson's disease' (specifically to test the number of watchers function), to my surprise the number of watchers were reported for all four pages. McortNGHH (talk) 21:44, 31 October 2016 (UTC)

Definitely a bug! Will let you know when it's fixed :) MusikAnimal (WMF) (talk) 21:58, 31 October 2016 (UTC)

BETA version: keep the "latest 10 20 ... days" links

  • Please add "Latest 10 20 30 60 90 days" to the new version as it was very useful in the old. Americanplus (talk) 22:47, 6 November 2016 (UTC)
  • The new version looks great, but I don't see the "30, 60, 90" day option anywhere. Please don't remove it, as this feature is very useful. Seiberth (talk) 06:17, 7 November 2016 (UTC)
  • First of all, congratulations for the excellent work you have done in this section. I would just like to suggest that you do not remove direct links to view pageviews in the last 10 20 30 60 90 days. Maybe keep as suggestions 7, 15, 30, 90 and 180 days (week, two weeks, month, 3 months and a semester). What about? It is useful to be able to click on suggested time range instead of manually entering it. Sturm (talk) 17:02, 7 November 2016 (UTC)

@Americanplus, Seiberth, and Sturm: I have added a dropdown to select various "latest" values. Does this work for you? The issue is if we were to show the links like we did before, it may not fit within the space of the left column, especially in other languages MusikAnimal (WMF) (talk) 17:23, 9 November 2016 (UTC)

Moving averages

Interpretation on the year+ scale is very difficult for pages with weekly trends.
Some form of decomposition or smoothing would be very helpful. Thanks! – Kjerish (talk) 18:28, 7 November 2016 (UTC)

@Kjerish: This is on the to-do's! Soon we hope to support viewing of data even older than July 2015, so a feature like "moving averages" will become that much more helpful. Follow phab:T147515 for updates. Thanks MusikAnimal (WMF) (talk) 21:25, 8 November 2016 (UTC)

It's not working

Task T149058 resolved

Hi, since Octuber 16, the Pageviews Analysis don't working and shows only the views until this day. Mr. Fulano (talk) 16:15, 24 October 2016 (UTC)

@Mr. Fulano: Could you give a link to the page that is not working for you? Or, is it not working for all pages? Also, what browser and operating system are you using? For example, Internet Explorer 10 on Windows 7, Chrome 52 on Mac OS, etc. Thank you! MusikAnimal (WMF) (talk) 17:20, 24 October 2016 (UTC)
@MusikAnimal (WMF): It isn't work in all pages. My browser is Opera 37 on Android 5.1 (now). Mr. Fulano (talk) 18:02, 24 October 2016 (UTC)
I confirm that since the day 16/10 the counter does not record the visitations pages to consult in Portuguese language. Alexandre M. B. Berwanger
@Alexandre M. B. Berwanger: And this also happens to you on all pages? I'm seeing data to the present day for everything I check, for example [2]. Is it only Portuguese Wikipedia that is missing data for you? Try this to see Main Page views on English Wikipedia.
There is also a new version of Pageviews Analysis in development. You could try there to see if it works: [3]. Thanks, MusikAnimal (WMF) (talk) 20:48, 24 October 2016 (UTC)
Can confirm that doesn't work completely for me either. Example here, but every page gives the same problem: it stops giving information after October 16 (only gives zeroes). Could replicate in Chrome 53 and Firefox 49 on Windows 8. A user reported that it worked for him. This is the first time I access the tool, so it might not be a cache issue. Same thing in the new version at the link provided. Hope this gives a insight. --Luk3 (talk) 20:51, 24 October 2016 (UTC)
@MusikAnimal (WMF): I tested a beta version and it wasn't work, again. I remember that in Octuber 17, the API wiki was crashed. Can is it related? Mr. Fulano (talk) 21:00, 24 October 2016 (UTC)
@Mr. Fulano: Perhaps... let's first see if it's the pageviews API that is broken. Could you please go to this URL and use Ctrl+F to search for "2016102300" (October 23) and tell me if there is a match? The text at the very end of the page should look like "timestamp":"2016102300","access":"all-access","agent":"user","views":588 (588 pageviews for October 23). Do you see this? MusikAnimal (WMF) (talk) 21:13, 24 October 2016 (UTC)

┌─────────────────────────────────┘
@MusikAnimal (WMF): Yes, I saw. The data are equal. Mr. Fulano (talk) 21:21, 24 October 2016 (UTC)

@Mr. Fulano and Luk3: Alright, the one thing you all seem to have in common is that you are active on a Portuguese project, which makes me think you live in Portugal. This is private information so you do not need to say this unless you want to. You can also email me if you want.
You've also confirmed the pageviews API is returning the correct data, which is baffling. So let's try a different tool... could you please see if data for October 16 and later is shown on http://tools.wmflabs.org/wikistats ? You will have to manually enter a page name MusikAnimal (WMF) (talk) 21:55, 24 October 2016 (UTC)
I'm from Brazil, and I also can't see any date after October 16, for any page. L'editeur (talk) 22:00, 24 October 2016 (UTC)
@MusikAnimal (WMF): This last one link looks it's working fine here. L'editeur (talk) 22:08, 24 October 2016 (UTC)
@MusikAnimal (WMF): I can't see any data after Octuber 16 in wikistats. In en.wiki, I didn't see the data, too. Mr. Fulano (talk) 22:17, 24 October 2016 (UTC)
Really?? So let me get this right, L'editeur wikistats is working for you, but it is not working for Mr. Fulano? And Pageviews Analysis is not working for either of you? MusikAnimal (WMF) (talk) 22:27, 24 October 2016 (UTC)
@Alexandre M. B. Berwanger and Luk3: Could you also tell me if wikistats is working for you? You will need to manually enter a page name. Thanks! MusikAnimal (WMF) (talk) 22:32, 24 October 2016 (UTC)
@MusikAnimal (WMF): Yes, and the problem is some users can see the data and others no. If you want (and understand portuguese), you can read in pt:WP:Café dos programadores#Contador de visualizações dos artigos.. Mr. Fulano (talk) 22:33, 24 October 2016 (UTC)

Topviews for WikiProjects

Hi. is there a way to see a list of top viewed pages in a particular Wikiproject? --Saqib (talk) 09:34, 7 November 2016 (UTC)

Currently, no. There are some solutions that have been proposed, but nothing is in the works yet. See T141154 and T141010 for more information. Best, MusikAnimal (WMF) (talk) 18:16, 10 November 2016 (UTC)
@Saqib: Actually, there is a way to do this, assuming the WikiProject is not enormous in size (10,000 pages or less). You can use the Massviews tool and provide a category for the WikiProject, such as Category:WikiProject Google articles. Pages in this category are actually the talk pages of the articles, so you will have to select the "Use subject page instead of talk page" option. So here's all the pages in WikiProject Google, sorted by number of pageviews: [4]. For larger WikiProjects, such as WikiProject Medicine, you can get the most-viewed pages for a certain class of article. E.g. try running a query for a category like Category:High-importance medicine articles. Hope this helps! MusikAnimal (WMF) (talk) 01:06, 11 November 2016 (UTC)

New possible tool to do

Hi, guys! Your Pageviews Analysis project is extraordinary cool! I'd like to ask you to add a new tool in the project - a tool named like "Comparison of pageviews across Wikipedians". What if an author could watch the number of views per day of all the pages he created? That'd be cool, wouldn't it? Of course, the idea could be not appropriate for the project. Couldn't you, in such a case, write the appropriate code sequence for interested Wikipedians like me, if it wouldn't be too much trouble for you. Yours sincerely, Egor Shustoff (talk) 07:23, 12 November 2016 (UTC).

Hello User:Egor Shustoff, there is a tool called Metronom which shows all pageviews for one single user and a given month on a given language version of Wikipedia. --M2k~dewiki (talk) 13:21, 12 November 2016 (UTC)
@Egor Shustoff: You can also use the Massviews tool to show pageviews of all linked pages on a given page. So for instance, I have my list of articles at User:MusikAnimal/Articles/Created. I can then go to Massviews, select "Wikilinks" as the source, then enter the full URL (example). Hope this helps! MusikAnimal (WMF) (talk) 18:28, 12 November 2016 (UTC)
I do realize this functionality is buried into Massviews, and most people won't know about it. So a dedicated tool would be nice (Metronom still does an excellent job, however!). I've created a ticket at phab:T150585 MusikAnimal (WMF) (talk) 18:41, 12 November 2016 (UTC)

Normally, Topviews Analysis wil show the daily results after a few hours the day passed. However, there are still no data shown for 2016-11-10 and 2016-11-11 for all languages.--Jason6698 (talk) 13:02, 12 November 2016 (UTC)

New feature for Pageviews

Is it possible to display where views are coming from? There are sometimes spikes in pageviews that I would like to understand. That is, if someone views a page from a link in another Wikipedia article or a link elsewhere on the internet, can that information be captured and displayed? Feedback on BETA version

Suggest that perhaps for a single title, in the bar chart the values could be displayed on the chart, similar to stats.grok.se

Don't know how easy this is, but at times I don't want to go through the process of downloading a file or moving the cursor over each data point.

Doug Stone — The preceding unsigned comment was added by 67.53.162.18 (talk)

Not a bad idea! However unlike stats.grok.se, Pageviews Analysis allows you to view data over very wide ranges, such that showing the values over each bar simply won't be possible. I could add some logic to only show the values if they would fit, etc, but this all depends on if the Chart.js library supports it. I'll look into it! Thanks MusikAnimal (WMF) (talk) 19:39, 11 November 2016 (UTC)
Done! The option is now shown as "Show values" MusikAnimal (WMF) (talk) 05:33, 15 November 2016 (UTC)

Unable to select a specific range of dates

Hi! I can't select a specific range of dates, I just can view the presets of last month, last 90 days, etc. --ProtoplasmaKid (WM-MX) (talk) 23:43, 15 November 2016 (UTC)

@ProtoplasmaKid: I take you're able to see the datepicker when you click on the date range input? From there you should be able to click on dates in the calendar, or type them in directly. What browser and operating system are you using? MusikAnimal (WMF) (talk) 20:00, 16 November 2016 (UTC)

Congrats again for the excellent work! My only caveat is that the content is too close to the edges of the screen, especially in the content on the right side of the screen. Regards, Sturm (talk) 03:26, 20 November 2016 (UTC)

@Sturm: Hey! Could you share what browser/operating system you're using, and also perhaps a screenshot of what you are seeing? There should be roughly 15px of padding around the content, which is seemingly sufficient, but maybe it is appearing different for you. Thanks MusikAnimal (WMF) (talk) 23:41, 20 November 2016 (UTC)

Latest 30 days

Please make stat for latest 30 days as default. It is equal to one mont and a very figurative number. -- Menner (talk) 15:00, 20 November 2016 (UTC)

@Menner: I want to do this, but the issue is 20 days offers a good perspective, and moreover the ideal illustration of how data is charted. 30 days is just so much that the data becomes more squeezed together, sacrificing the appeal of the chart for demonstration purposes. If you want to link to the past 30 days on your wiki, this easy to do. Just use range=latest-30 in the link, and omit and start and end parameters. More info at toollabs:pageviews/url_structure. I might also consider adding a setting to show your preferred default range. Would that help? MusikAnimal (WMF) (talk) 23:45, 20 November 2016 (UTC)

About chart data

Thank for making this good tool. It is really useful. But in long term analytics to show the change of the pageview or siteview, it will be better to add weekly chart and monthly chart. Thank you.--Alexchris (talk) 04:49, 22 November 2016 (UTC)

The pageviews endpoint only offers a daily granularity, but we could implement a monthly view on the clientside. I've created a task at phab:T151373. The endpoint used for siteviews does offer monthly data, however, and adding support for it is on the roadmap, see phab:T148610. Best MusikAnimal (WMF) (talk) 19:13, 22 November 2016 (UTC)

daily data of search queries for word “Bitcoin”

Hi there! Thank you very much for your work, it very helped me collect some data analysis, but I also need some data earlier than 2015 year. I have tried to ged data from stats.grok.se but I need a daily data in table shape. Maybe you know how can I get it? Thank You!

The raw data for stats.grok.se is here. I'm not sure if it is already in a suitable format for your purposes, but you should be able to parse it as needed. Hope this helps MusikAnimal (WMF) (talk) 18:15, 27 November 2016 (UTC)

Date ranges in Redirect Views

For some reason, I cannot get the dates in Redirect Views to behave properly. (I am using Mobile Safari on an iPad, iOS 10.) Clicking on "all time" successfully shows the range 7/172015–11/24/2016 (and thank you for that button!). But I've been trying to set the start date to 2/11/2016 and get the views from then up to the present. But when I edit the start date to what I want, the end date has mysteriously reset itself to 5/11/2016. It will NOT go beyond this date. I would assume a three-month limit on the tool, but that can't be right because "all time" works.

I should clarify that I edit dates directly in the text box; I've had little luck using the calendar widget.

Any light you can shed on this frustrating problem would be welcome. Please {{ping}} me when replying. Thanks. Gorthian (talk) 04:14, 26 November 2016 (UTC)

@Gorthian: Sorry about that! The date limits are remnants before the improved analytics cluster was deployed (basically back when performance was still an issue). The "all time" button worked because of some unrelated bug in the date range picker. Anyhoo, I've just removed all date range limitations from all the apps, so you should now be able to enter any arbitrary range :) However I should offer a disclaimer: While the API can now handle any date range, the app which runs on your browser may slow down or perhaps even freeze if you choose a wide range for a large number of articles. This is unlikely to happen with Redirect Views, as you probably don't get more than 200 or so articles. I suspect browser performance would only be an issue if you query for thousands, perhaps tens of thousands, of pages. Best MusikAnimal (WMF) (talk) 19:12, 26 November 2016 (UTC)

Sum of editors counts same editors multiple times

I notice that the sum of editors takes the sum from each page and then adds those together. So if the same editor edits nine pages he or she will get counted in the final summary as nine editors instead of as a single editor. What should happen instead (if its' feasible) is that the editors from each page are pooled and then the unique editors counted. — The preceding unsigned comment was added by Larsnooden (talk)

Very valid point! I can fix this. Thanks :) MusikAnimal (WMF) (talk) 03:30, 25 November 2016 (UTC)

Vibrating page

Whenever I click the link for this from a page's Revision history, the image on the screen "vibrates" as if caught in some infinite loop. May only be an issue with Google Chrome; Internet Explorer seems to still work fine. Chrome also works fine if I use this directly, rather than via the link in revision history. Wbm1058 (talk) 04:23, 2 December 2016 (UTC)

@Wbm1058: I still haven't been able to figure this out. If you could try this... go to the Pageviews tool via the link in Revision history, just as you did. Confirm everything is vibrating. Now try resizing your browser. Does the vibration go away? I actually recently got a new computer with a bigger screen, so maybe I can reproduce this. It seems to only happen if the browser window is a specific size. Thanks MusikAnimal (WMF) (talk) 21:27, 2 December 2016 (UTC)
Hey right, that's it. The problem is only when my browser is maximized. When I "restore down" the vibrating stops. When I maximize from the restored down screen it comes back to vibrate again. My screen is 1920×1200 which is higher-res than HDTV. I watch TV on my computer with Windows Media Center. Which is why my desktop is still Windows 7. Wbm1058 (talk) 21:40, 2 December 2016 (UTC)

No data found

When checking feor newly created page, I get "Error querying Pageviews API - Not found." error in graph. I think it is a bit misleading as it seems like a serous error (something is broken). In reality there is just no pageview data. --Papuass (talk) 12:57, 2 December 2016 (UTC)

Outreach Wiki support for Topviews

Hey, so I went to do an evaluation of why there is so much of a spike in Outreach's pageviews recently, and I noticed that I can't used Topviews for Outreach and Meta, and presumambly other projects. Knowing which pages on coordination wikis have the most views in any given window of time, would be super useful for a number of situations. I would really appreciate them being added to the tools, Astinson (WMF) (talk) 17:11, 2 December 2016 (UTC)

@Astinson (WMF): Try again tomorrow. The topviews data for the previous month usually gets populated on the 2nd or 3rd of the month. You don't see anything for October because data older than November 2016 is apparently not available for Outreach and other "non-knowledge" wikis, which were recently added to the Pageviews API. Hope this helps MusikAnimal (WMF) (talk) 02:21, 3 December 2016 (UTC)
@MusikAnimal (WMF): Ah, gotcha: that explains it, working now. However, the error that was showing up was that the "Correct language" wasn't included: I think you might want to modify the language for the error, so that its a slightly better description of the "non-Knowledge" wikis. Astinson (WMF) (talk) 16:57, 5 December 2016 (UTC)
Also, its not clear to me that the "Top Views" analysis updates only the month after, so its not a continually updating bit of information during the month of. You might want to include some type of user note. Astinson (WMF) (talk) 16:58, 5 December 2016 (UTC)
@Astinson (WMF): Using the "Date type" dropdown, you can switch between monthly and daily. The latter is continually updated during the month, but you can only view one day at a time. I could add a (?) link next to the "Date type" label, that goes to the FAQ explaining how this works. Would that help? MusikAnimal (WMF) (talk) 06:13, 8 December 2016 (UTC)
Or a blurb at the top under the title, with a link to the F.A.Q. I would think. Astinson (WMF) (talk) 15:06, 8 December 2016 (UTC)

pageviews feature request: number of days with >0 views

Would it be possible for the tool to report the number of days in the period displayed where a given page received >0 page views. This is often a useful thing to consider when determining whether redirects are useful or not. Ideal would be to expand the note at the bottom of the page from e.g. "71 pageviews" to "71 pageviews on 51 of 335 days (15%)". Thanks. Thryduulf (talk: meta · en.wp · wikidata) 18:14, 2 December 2016 (UTC)

Interesting, but sort of niche-y. Maybe I could add it just to Redirect Views, since that was built with redirect discussions in mind. MusikAnimal (WMF) (talk) 21:48, 9 December 2016 (UTC)

John Glenn not showing a count

Just noticed that John Glenn has no count for 12/8/16, while everything else I've checked shows up fine. As a major news story, is it possible that his count blasted off the chart? --Light show (talk) 17:26, 9 December 2016 (UTC)

@Light show: There is some weird caching logic with the API (not the Pageviews application) that I don't really understand. Sometimes users see the data for today/yesterday while others do not. Here I am able to see it. It will eventually show up for you too, though, promise :) Check back later today, and certainly by tomorrow it should be there. The number by the way is 508,855 pageviews for 8 December – so roughly 50 times the normal traffic that page receives! MusikAnimal (WMF) (talk) 18:51, 9 December 2016 (UTC)
Thanks for checking. --Light show (talk) 19:00, 9 December 2016 (UTC)

view spike on et.wiki

Hallo, is this view spike on et.wiki 2016 stats [9] some error or real data? Spike comes from this article [10]. --WikedKentaur (talk) 18:46, 9 December 2016 (UTC)

@WikedKentaur: It is most likely a bot that has spoofed its user agent to seem like a normal user. This sort of thing happens time to time, and unfortunately there's not much we can do about it. One way to identify false positives is to check mobile versus desktop. Mobile should be just as high if not higher than desktop. Here we see that Michael Jackson only shows up in Topviews for desktop, but does not show up for mobile web. Hope this helps! MusikAnimal (WMF) (talk) 18:58, 9 December 2016 (UTC)

Pipes in links

The pipe in the url is problematic in substituting templates. It wipes out all text after the pipe. See this revision for what I mean. Is it possible to use something else? Mark Schierbecker (talk) 13:29, 14 December 2016 (UTC)

@Mark Schierbecker: The pipe character is valid syntax in MediaWiki templates, so I think you need to use the {{!}} magic word. So instead of Todd_Graves|Todd_Graves_(entrepreneur) try Todd_Graves{{!}}Todd_Graves_(entrepreneur). Pageviews Analysis uses the pipe because that's the same system the MediaWiki API uses to separate a list of pages in a URL, since the pipe character | cannot be used in page titles [11].
If this is a common scenario (pasting in pageviews comparisons in to Template:Requested move), you might consider altering that template so that it automatically shows a link to Pageviews Analysis comparing the two articles. I'm happy to help with that, if you think it is a good idea. Best MusikAnimal (WMF) (talk) 01:01, 15 December 2016 (UTC)
That is a good idea. I'll propose it at WP:RM and maybe someone can help there. Mark Schierbecker (talk) 06:09, 15 December 2016 (UTC)
@Mark Schierbecker: Cool :) See also toollabs:pageviews/url_structure for documentation on how to construct the URL. For your purposes it should be as simple as //tools.wmflabs.org/pageviews?project=en.wikipedia.org&pages={{{page1}}}|{{{page2}}}&range=latest-30 to show the last 30 days of data for the two pages (or use latest-90 to show 90 days, whatever you want) MusikAnimal (WMF) (talk) 19:40, 15 December 2016 (UTC)

Date limits not working for Pages, Edits, etc. under Statistics

Is there a problem with the Siteviews Analysis tool? When looking at data from the past, numbers change every time I refresh the page. Specifically, the Pages and Edits figures under Statistics. Everything under Statistics seems to be reporting current data, not date-limited data.

Example for August, 2016

Statistics Pages: 41,035,700 Articles: 5,312,970 Edits: 865,232,851 Images: 849,875 Users: 29,806,303 Active users: 127,176 Admins: 1,273

Seems to report the same (increasing) data under Statistics for any date range; data under Pageviews looks OK. — The preceding unsigned comment was added by 50.1.84.250 (talk)

Those stats don't pertain to the selected range, but to the site overall. I will adjust the language to make this more clear. Best MusikAnimal (WMF) (talk) 18:51, 21 December 2016 (UTC)
The heading now reads "Statistics (all-time)". Hopefully that clears up any confusion MusikAnimal (WMF) (talk) 19:07, 27 December 2016 (UTC)
