Search feedback
editThe centralized search tool is now available for all users! Please let us know how you're finding the tool, whether there are any results you haven't been able to access, and any other bugs or issues you're encountering. Samwalton9 (WMF) (talk) 15:45, 5 October 2021 (UTC)
At launch there are three primary issues we haven't been able to address but are currently working on:
- Some De Gruyter results aren't accessible via search (T292550)
- Enable users to remove the Library Bundle limit from search results (T292549)
- Enable users to duplicate search to ProQuest (T292547)
Is the search tool helpful for your research?
editWill this change how you use the library? Please share any thoughts you have about how this might change your usage of the library.
- I'm not sure if I'm here right but if I use the search tool I can use at the beginning. If I'm for a while inactive and then want to search again i get at this point https://wikipedialibrary.wmflabs.org/users/my_library/ no search result instead I first get a white page and then, after realoding the page I get "A System Problem has Occurred To begin a new session, please login again." I logged out on and in on WP Library but didn't help. pls ping me.--Sanandros (talk) 13:26, 22 July 2022 (UTC)
Did you find what you were searching for?
editPlease share any issues you've encountered here, such as proxy errors or items which you think we should have access to but don't.
- Nomos does not seem to be indexed, either, I'm afraid… I searched for the term vorfragenkompetenz and got a list of 8 articles. One was from BASE: There is an abstract of the thesis I was looking for in Nomos hosted at Heidelberg University, but you won't find the dissertation itself in EDS which, of course, is available in Nomos. Regards, Aschmidt (talk) 19:03, 7 October 2021 (UTC)
- An interesting observation: Rock's Backpages (which I have application access to) is not flagged as being searchable via the search bar, yet a search from the search bar returned several Rock's Backpages records, all of which I could display in full using the "View record at Rocks Backpages" link. —Bruce1eetalk 11:23, 8 October 2021 (UTC)
- I've just noticed that Project MUSE, which I also have application access to and is not flagged as being searchable via the search bar, also popped up in the search results. —Bruce1eetalk 11:47, 8 October 2021 (UTC)
- Thanks, looking into this. We originally had holdings configured for the full set rather than just Bundle, so we might have missed some. Samwalton9 (WMF) (talk) 13:47, 8 October 2021 (UTC)
- @Samwalton9 (WMF): Is there a reason why you want to restrict the holdings to the Library Bundle? Why not the full set? It works nicely, at least for Rock's Backpages and Project MUSE. —Bruce1eetalk 14:02, 8 October 2021 (UTC)
- @Bruce1ee: The idea was the following: We have three options - only allow searching Bundle (all results are accessible to all users), only allow searching the entire collection (some results are accessible, some aren't), or have one of these options be the default and the other an option. We went for option 3, with the default being that all results should be accessible - we figured this would make most sense for new users. Unfortunately we need EBSCO to update some configurations on their end to enable the option to browse two different collections with an option to switch between them, and they've been quite slow in doing this so far. For now, then, we figured we'd start with the Bundle-only option and enable the option to remove this limit in the future when we're able to. In an ideal world the search tool would search all collections that you individually are authorized for but that wasn't technically feasible. Samwalton9 (WMF) (talk) 14:25, 8 October 2021 (UTC)
- Got it, thanks. —Bruce1eetalk 14:36, 8 October 2021 (UTC)

- Quick update: It looks like this might be a back-end EBSCO problem, we updated our Holdings correctly but I can reproduce some of the unselected databases still showing up in search results. I've filed a ticket. Samwalton9 (WMF) (talk) 10:31, 12 October 2021 (UTC)

- I'm new to the Wikipedia Library and I would like to use the search tool but I am reluctant to do so because I don't understand what is indexed. I made a small experiment, picking a random collection among 'my collections', namely The Central and Eastern European Online Library, which has the icon for 'collection is fully searchable via the search bar', then I picked a random paper among the available ones, namely Un Trésor de cataphores, which is available full-text, I copied part of the title of the paper in the Wikipedia Library's search bar, namely Trésor de cataphores, and the search returned a list of 16 papers and books, but not my random target. Am I missing something? EricLaporte (talk) 12:56, 21 April 2022 (UTC)
Any other feedback
edit- I love that you added this tool! Every University library seems to have a centralized search function like this, so it's nice that Wikimedia does now, too! Tyrone Madera (talk) 19:13, 7 October 2021 (UTC)
- Wow! One of the problems with the depth of WL is just that – the depth. I know that I've sometimes run out of time/energy before coming to the best (or sometimes only) resource for the material I'm trying to find. Nice job! —[AlanM1(talk)]— 19:25, 7 October 2021 (UTC)
- I like the Filter options on the left-hand-side, but what I feel is missing is "Filter by Publication Title". ProQuest, GALE, EBSCO and others all have it, and I find it very useful to reduce the number of search results. —Bruce1eetalk 11:37, 8 October 2021 (UTC)
- @Bruce1ee: From what I can see we can't turn this on as a filter unfortunately. You can, however, click Advanced Search and enter a Journal Name, but it's free text rather than a list of options. Samwalton9 (WMF) (talk) 13:41, 8 October 2021 (UTC)

I do indeed use privacy control extensions such as EFF's Privacy Badger and uBlock Origin, both of which reporting that they've blocked cookies or something from cmp.osano.com. In both cases this stems from default, standard black lists.
Restarting Firefox in "troubleshoot mode", hence said extensions being disabled, everything works as expected. Except that I did not expect the Wikimedia Foundation to break the mild and decent privacy rules enabled by those quite common extensions.
--Noliscient (talk) 19:10, 23 March 2022 (UTC)
- @Noliscient: Sorry you're running into this issue. For technical reasons we authenticate users for search via referring URL. I use uBlock Origin and haven't had this issue, so I wonder if there might be a setting you could toggle, or an exception list, in Privacy Badger or another extension you might have configured to block this data. I had a quick look at Privacy Badger and couldn't see anything about blocking referring URL. Samwalton9 (WMF) (talk) 10:27, 24 March 2022 (UTC)
- @Samwalton9 (WMF) Hello Sam and thank you for the feedback. I shall investigate further on my own, perhaps by trying to understand what exactly is refering URL authentication, which, after all, seems maybe close enough to questions of single sign-on that I once had to tackle in my previous life as a software engineer. Any hint on how it's done here would be appreciated.
- I shall also try and pinpoint which extension is acting up here, and what exactly are those blocked cookies. By the way, what's the part of cmp.osano.com in this play ? Noliscient (talk) 12:58, 31 March 2022 (UTC)
- @Noliscient: 'Referring URL authentication' refers to the Referer HTTP header which needs to be something like "https://wikipedialibrary.wmflabs.org/" for search to recognise you correctly. I'll ask our engineers about the cmp.osano.com piece, I'm not sure on that. Samwalton9 (WMF) (talk) 11:59, 4 April 2022 (UTC)
- @Noliscient: I just asked about the cmp.osano.com URL and it turns out that's for tracking the cookie consent popups. You can read more here. Samwalton9 (WMF) (talk) 13:31, 4 April 2022 (UTC)
Deprecated Sources
editFiltering out deprecated sources would be helpful. — The preceding unsigned comment was added by Bogger (talk) 17:39, 7 October 2021 (UTC)
- @Bogger: Are there particular deprecated sources you've noticed in search results? Thanks, Samwalton9 (WMF) (talk) 13:32, 8 October 2021 (UTC)
- @Samwalton9 (WMF): Daily Mail (London, England) for one. (via a aggregator such as Gale, or InfoTrac). But I guess deprecated sources are language specific. - Bogger (talk) 15:27, 8 October 2021 (UTC)
- Yeah unfortunately it would be very difficult for us to maintain a list that specific, in addition to the project-specific issues. Samwalton9 (WMF) (talk) 15:36, 8 October 2021 (UTC)

Initial impressions
edit- Was happy that it seems to search for bound phrases as a default. That is, I typed in George Clinton with no quotes and it default found stuff for HIM and not other, more popular, Clintons. This is good.
- I like how the limits on the lefthand side when you adjust them, redo the search.
- Very much dislike the embedded PDF viewer which also doesn't work with my version of Firefox so required an extra step to access the PDF of an article.
- I got in a weird loop when I did a search for Jessamyn and the results looked good. I clicked on a link to "Full Text Finder" not sure what that was and got a Firefox error reproduced to the right. I'm aware this may be kind of normal but it also may be fixable.
- After that step (above) I went into the Full Text Finder which gave me the option to do my search in three of their databases (text for my results is below) but when I clicked on the top two options I got no results and when I clicked on the last item I just got a general search for all of the results containing that publication (i.e. not the article I wanted). It's possible I don't understand what "Full Text Finder" does, but basically my result set was supposed to be searching ONLY for items available in full-text and yet it definitely returned a result that was not available in full text. This is a reproducible result, I can search for other things and the same thing happens, so maybe

Those are early impressions. This is clearly a really powerful too, thank you. Jessamyn (talk) 19:19, 7 October 2021 (UTC)
- @Jessamyn: Thanks for the feedback! What version of Firefox are you using? Also, I notice your screenshot mentions Meta, I'm not sure why you would have been sent there on your way to the results, do you know what the URL of the page was where you took that screenshot (or could you reproduce it to get a new URL)? Samwalton9 (WMF) (talk) 13:49, 8 October 2021 (UTC)
- @Samwalton9: I'm using Firefox 92 for the Mac, with a bunch of plugins installed so it's possible one of them was the culprit. If I do the search again, here are the URLs I go through....
- start here and type jessamyn in the search box
- get this URL
- click the words "Full text finder" that appear beneath the results for the third result (the one in Hollywood Reporter) and get that error at this URL.
- I don't know why it's mentioning Meta either! Jessamyn (talk) 18:36, 9 October 2021 (UTC)

"The Reign of King Chabbash: An Interpretation"
returns a record with a "Full Text Finder" link, which gives me a "Firefox Can’t Open This Page" message and a "Open Site in New Window" button, which returns "No session token" / "Permission denied". —Bruce1eetalk 17:45, 15 October 2021 (UTC)- @Samwalton9 (WMF): This error is still persisting, except that now when I click "Open Site in New Window", I'm taken back to TWL landing page. NOT is not working
editIn advanced search, I was looking for general articles about personal protective equipment, but a lot of them where specifically about covid-19 PPE, so I add "covid" in "not" field, but I was still seeing articles with "covid" on the title. Daniele Pugliesi (talk) 01:01, 8 October 2021 (UTC)
Limited topics
editI would like to search on more specific topics, as Chemistry, Chemical engineering, Health & Safety (not Health & Medicine), etc. I think it will be useful also for others to have more specific topics to search in. Daniele Pugliesi (talk) 01:04, 8 October 2021 (UTC)

Searching NewspaperARCHIVE.com
editDear colleague(s),
Thank you for granting me access to the Wikipedia Library recently, through which I was hopeful to access and search NewspaperARCHIVE.com. I am logged into my account at the Wikipedia Library, where I see the Newspaper Archive among the 32 shown in "My Library"; so far, so good. When I click on their "Go to site" field, I reach this page, and when I enter a search argument (First name: "Jack" and Last name: "Whiting") hoping to find newspaper articles about this American actor (1901-1921), and click on the next tab ("Discover your family stories"), I am taken to a screen that asks me to "view all results via a free trial", which then requests that I go through a registration process. Since I haven't used the Wikipedia Library before, I had assumed it would grant me access to the 32 websites listed in "My Library" without having to register, in any way, at the target website(s). I may be missing something important, so thank you very much for helping me by clarifying how this service is meant to be used.
With kind regards;
Patrick. ツ Pdebee (talk) 17:16, 18 October 2021 (UTC)
- @Pdebee: Some collections are accessible simply by clicking (the ones which say "Access Collection"). Others require some additional step (they say "Go to site"). For the latter, you should have received some emails around the time your application was approved with details on how to access NewspaperArchive.com - they should involve you logging in to the site with your email address. If you can't find those or are having any other issues please let me know. Samwalton9 (WMF) (talk) 12:32, 19 October 2021 (UTC)
- Dear Sam,
Please accept my heartfelt apologies for this late reply; I have been away from home (and thus without access to my desktop), and then quite solicited in real life until today. In any case, thank you so much for your most helpful advice: it turns out that I did receive a registration email from NewspaperArchive.com, but it had been placed in my junk folder, and I almost deleted it too, because it came from an email address of SoWhy, which seemed a bit suspicious to me... But all is well: I have now followed the instructions in that email and have been able to access the archive first time round, which is wonderful! Thank you once again for your kind and helpful assistance, Sam, and for all your other contributions to our encyclopaedia.
With kindest regards;

- Dear Sam,
Search by DOI?
editIt looks like DOI is not a valid search item, but imho it really should be. That's the whole point of the existence of DOI and similar index systems (PMID, ISBN, etc). Dodger67 (talk) 14:44, 19 November 2021 (UTC)
- @Dodger67: Using DOI search terms are working for me, at least for the ones I've tried. For example, 10.1038/s41598-021-96897-1 finds this paper: "Exploring the links between volcano flank collapse ..." from Scientific Reports. Of course it will only work if the DOI target is in a database indexed by TWL, and the full text is available. —Bruce1eetalk 15:25, 19 November 2021 (UTC)
- DOI is not working for me, I've put in a DOI in several of the top level search interfaces and nothing is returned. doi.org/10.1016/j.addma.2022.102643 An article's DOI must be sufficient to retrieve the full article, if it is present in the database. If it is not present in the database, some additional clues must be offered. -- Larsnooden (talk) 12:40, 23 May 2022 (UTC)
- doi.org/ is not part of the DOI - the DOI is the sequence after that (starting with 10.). Searching that particular DOI finds a reference to the article, although the full text of the article itself is not available. Nikkimaria (talk) 00:47, 24 May 2022 (UTC)

editI do not seem to be able to access anything through this resource. Is it possible to take a look to see if it can be fixed? Brigade Piron (talk) 21:26, 10 January 2022 (UTC)
Thanks
editHello, I don't know who sent me the link to this, but I am ever so grateful. I have been able to mine lots of information tonight and taken several clean-up messages off articles so that their citations are stable, and/or now present when that were displaying a {{citation needed}} tag. Thank you so much. Regards. The joy of all things (talk) 22:59, 10 January 2022 (UTC)

Newly-approved application but can't access
editMy application to be able to access newspapers.com was marked "approved," but when I do a search, I still can't access results from most sources; e.g., for the search I just did, I couldn't access daily papers the Corpus Christi Times/Caller/Caller-Times ( it goes by different names for different editions over the years) or other general newspapers, only a hit under The Jewish Monitor that I already was able to access without having to have Wikipedia Library approval. I've been able to use the library for other sites, such as Newspaper Archive. I'm going to try signing out and signing back in in case it's a question of still being signed in from last week before my approval, but if that doesn't work I'm not sure what to do. Lawikitejana (talk) 22:51, 13 January 2022 (UTC)
Note: logging out and back in didn't work, but it did remind me that I should mention in case it matters that (1) I did follow the original instructions and create an account first (2) that account is via login on Ancestry.com. I wonder if that is making a difference to my ability to log in? Lawikitejana (talk) 22:55, 13 January 2022 (UTC)
- @Lawikitejana: 'Approved' isn't quite the final step of getting your Newspapers.com account set up, unfortunately! Our coordinator will send that application over to Newspapers.com to get your account set up, you should hear from them once that's done :) Samwalton9 (WMF) (talk) 10:56, 14 January 2022 (UTC)
Add simple bundle for autoconf editors?
editLooking great!! Advancing nicely since the addition of search...
Are there resources that could be made available to all autoconf editors w/ recent activity? (or, if worried about abuse, some combination of this w/ delegation / invitation by an existing cardholder) The "6 month" requirement seems the sharpest barrier to supporting active contributors -- many people get deeply involved but only for a period of time / over the course of a research project, and could use this research boost while they are engaged in their project.
Currently some sources are in the core library bundle and others need individual approval. I'd love to see access to the framework extended, even if that is only to a more limited bundle.

Search results more optimistic than actual
editSo, I am editing the wikipedia page of the Marquis of Aguayo, a Governor in New Spain, in 1722. At the homepage here in the Library my search query is: "marquis aguayo". I get 2,360 results.
• I click on the 1st result, which reads "Marqués de san Miguel de Aguayo"
• The detailed card comes up, and on the left there is an icon which reads "* GALE / View Full Text"
* Click on "* GALE / View Full Text" and a new page opens up:
•* BookmarkAuthorizationFailure, You do not have access to the requested document
Is this normal, expected behaviour? I tried to ref the link to the fail here in this line, but the system rejected my edit for vandalism, so I am typing this text instead.
BTW, thanks for making this resource available, it is new to me, I have been using it for about a week, this is the 1st outright fail. XavierItzm (talk) 01:14, 27 January 2022 (UTC)
- I'm getting the same error (for me it's the 3rd result). Not sure what the problem is. —Bruce1eetalk 06:02, 27 January 2022 (UTC)
- @XavierItzm: That's an odd one, we'll look into it, thanks for reporting. As it turns out, that text is available through DeGruyter - you should be able to access the relevant chapter at this link. Let me know if that doesn't work for you. Samwalton9 (WMF) (talk) 12:00, 27 January 2022 (UTC)
- @Samwalton9: Thank you very much for the alternate source. The DeGruyter link worked, and, even better, I've now learned to do searches directly via the DeGruyter Collection page.
I would like to add color to the "* GALE / View Full Text" failure mode from additional non-exhaustive sampling this morning. When doing simple searches for "Explorers and Settlers of Spanish Texas" straight from the Library Homepage, some of the results bear the "* GALE / View Full Text" icon. In my sampling, on each entry result,
• If the "* GALE / View Full Text" icon is associated to the icon "Periodical" or "News" or "Academic Journal", then clicking on the "* GALE / View Full Text" icon results in successful access to the resource.
• If the "* GALE / View Full Text" icon is associated to the icon "Book", then the result is failure due to BookmarkAuthorizationFailure.
I would also like to thank @Bruce1ee: for his corroboration of the failure mode. XavierItzm (talk) 17:48, 27 January 2022 (UTC)

Default search
editRight after logging in, I see that a keyword search in the top search bar goes by default to EBSCO. How was this target chosen? What alternatives were considered?
For instance, was https://scholar.archive.org/ considered? I understand that the interface is very new and might not be ready to integrate customised URL resolution for paywalled works to which individual users are provided access, however I see there is already some integration with OCLC which does such things all the time with EZproxy. Nemo 15:41, 16 February 2022 (UTC)
- @Nemo bis: We're using EBSCO Discovery Service to index content from across the library's available collections. The primary problem we were trying to solve with the search bar was editors needing to go website-by-website to do their research. Having the option to search other venues is a good idea though! I could imagine a drop-down next to the search box which sends the user to a different search venue. Samwalton9 (WMF) (talk) 16:50, 23 February 2022 (UTC)
Taylor & Francis access problems?
editI just supposedly got access to Taylor & Francis Online, but can't get to the articles.
I've gone to the site both via the link in my access notification email, and via the "Access collection" button on the "My Collections" page. In both cases, the T&F website says "Access provided by The Wikipedia Library" at the top, so there is some degree of recognition, anyway. However, when I try to get to my target article, it only shows the first page sample, with no evident means of accessing the rest. There is a "Get access" button, but this only opens up various login and purchase options. One of these is "Access through your institution" which doesn't even recognize "The Wikipedia Library". So I'm out of ideas. Thanks. Phil wink (talk) 18:44, 16 February 2022 (UTC)

I just discovered the library and I cannot help but be amazed at this project. This is exactly what Wikipedia is about: making high-quality information available to everyone. I really want to thank everyone who works/worked on this project and I hope the Library continues to grow and improve content for even more subjects across the entirety of Wikipedia! Ranking algorithm needs tuning
editYour search algorithm needs tuning, as far as ordering the result set per some kind of relevance metric. I searched for A new anthology of Canadian literature in English
and got an exact title match, but I had to scroll down to result #10 to find it. Other items scoring higher than the exact match included:
- Odysseys Home : Mapping African-Canadian Literature (some matches to 'Canadian literature' in the result snippet)
- Violence Against Indigenous Women : Literature, Activism, Resistance (ditto)
- [T]he subtle but powerful cement of a patriotic literature”: English-Canadian Literary Anthologies, National Identity, and the Canon (not bad, but should have been result #2, after the exact match)
- A liberating inheritance : Chinese Canadian and Japanese Canadian literature in English, 1970s-2000s
- Kisiskâciwan : Indigenous Voices From Where the River Flows Swiftly (some snippet matches)
- The Sukkot and Simhat Torah Anthology (matches only the word "anthology" in title or snippet)
and so on, until the exact match in result #10, which should have appeared as #1. Mathglot (talk) 20:08, 16 April 2022 (UTC)
Where are the instructions?
editCould someone please refer me to an explanation of and how to use this new tool? Thank you.
Tried searching for a well-known 19th-century American, Gerrit Smith, and it took me to Ebsco only. Makes no sense. Deisenbe (talk) 18:14, 27 April 2022 (UTC)
- Well, I figured it out. What looks like an Ebsco database actually contains items and links from various places.
- I was without this until now as there are no instructions. Deisenbe (talk) 18:50, 27 April 2022 (UTC)
Oxford University Press Journals
editThe Oxford University Press Journals and Oxford Research Encyclopedias no longer allow access. Have they withdrawn from the service? Jts1882 (talk) 12:50, 3 August 2022 (UTC)
- @Jts1882: I'm reproducing this issue - we'll get in contact with them and figure out what happened :) Samwalton9 (WMF) (talk) 17:38, 3 August 2022 (UTC)
- Thanks. This wikipedia library has worked so well and this is the first time I've had an issue with it. Hopefully just an oversight somewhere. Jts1882 (talk) 19:25, 3 August 2022 (UTC)
Problems with Brill
editI have been using Jstor and De Gruyter with great pleasure, but if I try access to Brill something goes wrong. It asks to OK cookies and then I can search. The search results display the article I want, but the cookie pop up reappears and cannot be accessed or dismissed. Then the page hangs. Jcwf (talk) 09:50, 10 August 2022 (UTC)
