Translate extension edit

I'm very glad to see the Translate extension used! Thanks for putting some effort in this. I feel we're back in the 21st century now. :) --Nemo 21:15, 6 March 2018 (UTC)Reply

Clarification needed edit

Different project and contributor groups are treated fairly in the Wikimedia movement.
Project and contributor groups? What is here being referred to? -- Ата (talk) 11:56, 8 March 2018 (UTC)Reply

Great question Ата - we mean "Wikimedia project and contributor groups". I will change this in the English version.

I feel as though my freedom to speak up is protected on Wikipedia
Is it the same as I feel that my freedom … and why this particular wording? -- Ата (talk) 14:46, 8 March 2018 (UTC)Reply

Thanks Ата - This might just be how we phrased the question in English. I would say yes - it can be the same as "I feel that..." There is no particular reason why we used this phrasing, but I like your suggested change. I'll see if we can change it. --EGalvez (WMF) (talk) 23:28, 8 March 2018 (UTC)Reply

How often do you share your knowledge about the programs you implement in the following ways?
Half the time
What is meant by "the time" here; should I understand it as "I share knowledge about one out of two programs" or "this way of sharing knowledge takes me half the time I have and the other half is spent on sharing knowledge in other ways"? Beg your pardon if it should be obvious. --Ата (talk) 16:48, 8 March 2018 (UTC)Reply

Hi Ата - "Half the time" means, if I implement 10 programs, I might share what I learned about 5 times. Let me know if this is clear. --EGalvez (WMF) (talk) 23:28, 8 March 2018 (UTC)Reply

Project Roadmap edit

@User:Trizek_(WMF) I want to translate the spreadsheet[CE Insights] in Bengali eng-ben. Is there any estimate completion date for this project? Sandipan Banerjee

Hello Sandipan Banerjee
Due date is March 18th.
We may change the process a bit for other languages than the ones listed on the page. We are going to decide about that this evening UTC time. The page will be updated accordingly.
Thanks, Trizek (WMF) (talk) 13:41, 9 March 2018 (UTC)Reply

Updated spreadsheet for full translation edit

For those of you working on translating the full survey through the spreadsheet, I've updated the spreadsheet to include the complete survey (the old one was missing questions that were already translated into the priority languages). If you have already worked on the old version, feel free to keep working off the old version and I am happy to consolidate the information for you. Please email me at egalvez wikimedia.org if you have any questions. Thanks!--EGalvez (WMF) (talk) 22:05, 10 March 2018 (UTC)Reply

What I would make some corrections on already translated messages that are prsent in the spreadsheet? --Wargo (talk) 14:31, 17 March 2018 (UTC)Reply
Hi Wargo - I'm not sure I understand your question - are you asking what if you want to make changes to the content that is already translated in the spreadsheet? Can you share an example? Thanks! --EGalvez (WMF) (talk) 17:02, 19 March 2018 (UTC)Reply
Yes. Examples: replace all "Niw wiem" with "Nie wiem", "Szeszeke" -> "Seszele", "prosze" -> "proszę". --Wargo (talk) 17:59, 19 March 2018 (UTC)Reply
Hi Wargo - can you share why these are important changes? I recall someone telling me that Polish is gendered language - do these changes primarily change the gender of the words? Or is it for other reasons? Thanks! --EGalvez (WMF) (talk) 19:30, 19 March 2018 (UTC)Reply
Just (ugly) typos. --Wargo (talk) 19:51, 19 March 2018 (UTC)Reply
Okay - can you send me the list of changes to egalvez wikimedia.org? I may be able to upload the changes directly. It will be easier this way since the survey is currently being translated professionally. Thanks. --EGalvez (WMF) (talk) 23:14, 19 March 2018 (UTC)Reply

English typos edit

If you have spotted typos in English, please list them below so we can fix them. Trizek (WMF) (talk) 13:15, 11 March 2018 (UTC)Reply

Polish translation edit

I just took the survey, and the Polish translation contains many errors (most noticeable was the translation for "not applicable" which was totally wrong and out of context) and untranslated text. Where can I help to improve it? miktalk 09:27, 30 March 2018 (UTC)Reply

I saw the pages: Special:PrefixIndex/Community_Engagement_Insights/Translation/2018/, but could not find the error there. Using Special:Translate would be much easier. miktalk 09:43, 30 March 2018 (UTC)Reply
Unfortunately, some errors was from previous translation and that messages are not included again in this translation process. --Wargo (talk) 09:56, 30 March 2018 (UTC)Reply

How to update translations in the Qualtrics website? edit

Lot of translations in Russian in the Qualtrics website needs to update and improving (e.g. fix mistypes). How to update these texts? How do you know who performed this translation and where? In the Special:PrefixIndex/Community_Engagement_Insights/Translation/2018/ has no text from the starting page (introduction). --Kaganer (talk) 23:13, 3 April 2018 (UTC)Reply

@EGalvez (WMF) and Trizek (WMF): Please explain, where did the Russian translations come from, and why the request to the community for translation or proofreading was not made in advance (which was used in the previous such cases)? --Kaganer (talk) 12:56, 4 April 2018 (UTC)Reply
Hello Kaganer and thank you for your message. This helps us to improve the process.
The survey is now distributed. I don't think it is possible to update it now but Edward will reply about that.
Concerning invites, they have been sent through the usual channel, aka the Translators information list used weekly.
As of March 12, last day for translation, the translation for Russian so as other languages wasn't done. Edward had then chosen to ask for professional translations.
Sorry for the lack of quality for Russian Language. I note that you've added your name to the translators list, thank you very much! We will definitely contact you for next year.
Best, Trizek (WMF) (talk) 14:43, 4 April 2018 (UTC)Reply
@Trizek (WMF): Well, i'm not a subscriber of 'translators-l', this is my personal problem (I do not have the time to read so many English-language mailing lists. Even if I were a subscriber, I would not have seen this invitation.).
But you did plan the coverage of the Russian-speaking users - why did not you worry that there were no translations? Is it really so difficult to duplicate this appeal through other channels???
About "professional translations" - this is not a high-quality professional translations (at least). Ok, current level of Google-translate allows you to use it in most common cases. But your questions are not always compiled in a simple way for translation, and their translation can be ambiguous. To correctly formulate the questions and answers in your language, the translator must know the realities of the Wikimedia movement.
All this is a sad history of losing contact with the community. Sadly, very sadly. --Kaganer (talk) 15:50, 4 April 2018 (UTC)Reply
PS: Indeed, from the community some problems. And there can be different working situations. But if you made a translation outside the wiki - could you have imported these translations here and asked someone (or someone else, or even just like this) to at least look at them? Before launching the survey? --Kaganer (talk) 16:08, 4 April 2018 (UTC)Reply
Also in the wiki pages I do not find the text for question "The following is a list of topics related to the Wikimedia movement. You may see more questions about these topics later in the survey. Which of the following are you currently working on or have a strong interest in? Select all that apply." and his optional answers "Advocating to change laws that influence the Wikimedia movement", "Partnerships with governments, universities, companies or other organizations" and "None of the above".
If these texts was inherited from past survey without reviewing, that is also very bad way. This method does not allow to correct any previously made errors. --Kaganer (talk) 16:46, 4 April 2018 (UTC)Reply
Hi Kaganer, Thank you for that feedback about the Russian translation. We paid a contractor to complete most of the translation in Russian. Last year they did a very good job after having some staff review them, so I assumed they would be okay this year as well.I would not expect them to be bad, so this is surprising to hear. I'm wondering if you can share with me some specific examples? I can also share with you the complete version in Russian if you cannot recall the specific question.
All external translations needs to reviewing by community. They can be ridiculous and irrelevant in the most unexpected places. The most ridiculous example from the current - the literal translation of "Village Pump". I have softened my wording - basically everything is acceptable, but there are very numerous annoying little things. --Kaganer (talk) 17:26, 4 April 2018 (UTC)Reply
See as example my changes in Russian translation of "Terms of Use" after importing external professional translation (qualitative, but not exact). --Kaganer (talk) 17:33, 4 April 2018 (UTC)Reply
The Russian language is flexible, and in combination with the our terminology, it generates a lot of collisions that you just need to know. As example, in Russian "Wikipedia" word has grammatical forms, but "Wikimedia" has not. Or, terms "User", "Contributor" or "Participant" may be translated in one word, or different - depending on the context. And also (in Wikimedia) there is a practice to translate "User" as "Участник" ("participant") in most cases, but not a "пользователь" ("utilizer") - as all external translators do for all other sites and programs. These are the simplest and most obvious mistakes.--Kaganer (talk) 17:56, 4 April 2018 (UTC)Reply
As for the question about "the following is a list of topics related to the Wikimedia movement." - this question was actually already asked and used last year, so we did not request translation from the community. We wanted to reduce the burden as much as possible on volunteer translators given the length of the survey, but especially in the cases when text was already translated. Thank you. --EGalvez (WMF) (talk) 17:07, 4 April 2018 (UTC)Reply
I already understood that. The old text does not need to be re-translated, but it should be available for reviewing. Otherwise, it is impossible to correct those mistakes that were missed last time. In addition, it is necessary to reconcile old and new texts with each other. In addition, if you import external transfers, they will be included in the "translation memory" and facilitate the translators further work. --Kaganer (talk) 17:26, 4 April 2018 (UTC)Reply

I have just posted more short messages at Community Insights/Translation#Requests for translations. I wanted to make sure that you knew where the complete list was, so you could find everything. At this time, I think that's the complete list of messages that need to be translated. Most of the messages are very similar, so it should be quicker than usual. If you have any questions, please feel free to {{ping}} me. I'll check in at least once over the weekend. Also, if your name is a redlink here, then please consider creating your global user page here at Meta.

Thank you very much! Whatamidoing (WMF) (talk) 20:44, 23 August 2019 (UTC)Reply

Email edit

Whatamidoing (WMF), If Community Insights/Translation/2019/General information is a text for an email, then where does the link go in this sentence: "For the third year in a row, the Wikimedia Foundation is launching the [[Community Insights]] Survey."? (And the again later in text.) I wouldn't expect wiki markup to work in an email. --Ата (talk) 07:38, 24 August 2019 (UTC)Reply

An excellent point. I'll see about moving those links to the ends of the sentences. Something like "...launching the Community Insights Survey.[1]" I think I'll be able to fix all the translations myself (or maybe I'll do it when the e-mail messages are sent). Whatamidoing (WMF) (talk) 19:37, 24 August 2019 (UTC)Reply
Ата, this is   Done except for the e-mail address. I'm not sure how to represent that (I need to know more about how the e-mail messages are being sent.) Whatamidoing (WMF) (talk) 19:37, 26 August 2019 (UTC)Reply
Now I'm wondering if I did the wrong thing. Whatamidoing (WMF) (talk) 17:55, 27 August 2019 (UTC)Reply
