Announcement edit

Announcement for the contest to be posted on WikiProjects globally: Bridges Across Cultures, a Wikipedia editing contest that emphasizes cultural exchange between the countries of the MENA region and Latin America, will be launching tomorrow on Sunday October 15th. The contest is organized by several Wikimedia affiliates from both regions, and will run until November 15th. During the contest, Wikipedians from Latin America will contribute to articles on their local Wikiprojects about the culture of the MENA region, while Wikipedians from MENA will contribute to articles about the culture of Latin America. Participants will be awarded a certain amount of points based on their contributions, as the highest scoring participant from each region will receive prizes with a total of about 800$. The primary aim of Bridges Across Cultures is to promote collaboration between major Wikimedia communities in the Global South, and to help fill content gaps in different Wikipedia language projects.

Hi, I'm not sure, whether the political issues are included or not, e.g. es:Senado de la República de Colombia. Would you explain it please? İazak (talk) 12:28, 15 October 2017 (UTC)Reply

If your article fits one of these categories:
  • Literature
  • Music
  • Visual arts, cinema and TV
  • Cuisine and traditions
  • Monuments
it can be included. Politics obviously is not. -- Meisam (talk) 12:47, 15 October 2017 (UTC)Reply

Rosarinagazo (talk) 13:31, 15 October 2017 (UTC)Reply

Hi Rosarinagazo. That's a great idea. This contest is just the 1st bridge! We can work on different topics in the next contests. Making substantial changes in the middle of the event is never recommended. -- Meisam (talk) 13:37, 15 October 2017 (UTC)Reply

Wikipedia Cultural Diversity Observatory - project in line with Bridges across Cultures edit

Hello everyone,

My name is Marc Miquel and I am a researcher from Barcelona (Universitat Pompeu Fabra). While I was doing my PhD I studied whether an identity-based motivation could be important for editor participation and I analyzed content representing the editors' cultural context in 40 Wikipedia language editions. Few months later, I propose creating the Wikipedia Cultural Diversity Observatory in order to raise awareness on Wikipedia’s current state of cultural diversity, providing datasets, visualizations and statistics, and pointing out solutions to improve intercultural coverage. I am presenting this project to a grant and I expect that the site becomes a useful tool to help communities create more multicultural encyclopaedias and bridge the content culture gap that exists across language editions.

Here is the link of the project proposal:

I expect this project to help "Bridges across Cultures" finding some specific culture gaps to fill by the participants. I am searching for a volunteer in each language community. If you feel like it, you can contact me at: marcmiquel *at* I need a contact in your every community who can (1) check the quality of the cultural context article list I generate to be imported-exported to other language editions, (2) test the interface/data visualizations in their language, and (3) communicate the existance of the tool/site when ready to the language community and especially to those editors involved in projects which could use it or be aligned with it. Communicating it might not be a lot of work, but it will surely have a greater impact if done in native language! :). If you like the project, I'd ask you to endorse it. In any case, I will appreciate any feedback, comments,... Thanks in advance for your time!

Best regards, --Marcmiquel (talk) 17:11, 15 October 2017 (UTC)Reply

Suggestions edit

Can a user add an article in the list of suggestions? --KES47 (talk) 22:36, 15 October 2017 (UTC)Reply

Hi KES47! If you know any important article in Turkish Wikipedia related to the contest categories (arts, cuisine, traditions, monuments of Turkey) which
  1. Does have an article in your homewiki (Turkish Wikipedia)
  2. Also, does exist in least one other major Wikipedias (English, French, German, etc.)
  3. And, does not exist in Spanish and Portuguese, or if they do, one or both of the articles are smaller than 10 kB
Please add it to the appropriate section of the list in alphabetical order.
IMO, the Turkey's list needs more "monuments", and artists such as "photographers", "sculpturist", and "painters" if possible. Keep in mind that most of the users will try to translate the content from English Wikipedia. Let me know if you need any help. Saygılarımla -- Meisam (talk) 23:27, 15 October 2017 (UTC)Reply
Thanks, Meisam. I will proceed then. The article do match the criteria, but my homewiki is Spanish Wikipedia hehe. --KES47 (talk) 23:44, 15 October 2017 (UTC)Reply
Sorry KES47. I'm met many new people in the last few days. It's hard to keep track of them. ;) Then replace the "Turkish" with "Spanish" and "Spanish and Portuguese" with "Arabic, Persian, and Turkish" in my answer!! -- Meisam (talk) 23:48, 15 October 2017 (UTC)Reply
I would say that you can include more articles, but try not to remove those already posted and don't have more than 10 articles in each category per country. This way we avoid having too many articles and making the list unmanageable. --Osmar Valdebenito, B1mbo (talk) 00:09, 16 October 2017 (UTC)Reply

If I understand the question correctly, as the Evaluation criteria says, it is "5 kBytes" not "kbits" -- Meisam (talk) 17:06, 17 October 2017 (UTC)Reply
Each page has, in its history, the size expressed in bytes (as you can see here for example: 1259 bytes). 1 kilobyte (kB) is 1000 bytes, so the example has 1,3 kB. In that case, any article with 5 kB = 5,000 bytes or more is eligible, according to the size reflected in its history page. --Osmar Valdebenito, B1mbo (talk) 17:12, 17 October 2017 (UTC)Reply

List of proposed articles edit

is the list of proposed articles supposed to display the new ones automatically? I can't seem to edit it, but my new article doesn't show there either. Domusaurea (talk) 20:36, 17 October 2017 (UTC)Reply

Hi! The list is not automatic, so it might have a delay while we are updating the created articles. In the mean time, I've been working on an automatic table here, although it is not complete yet: Bridges across Cultures/Status. --Osmar Valdebenito, B1mbo (talk) 21:25, 21 October 2017 (UTC)Reply

History edit

I really dont undersant why cant we do articles about history... if we're trying to do a bridge across cultures, where is the history? Questions about Number of articles & Using English version edit

1.Can I translate more than one article? 2. I do not understand the original language (Spanish). Can I translate from English version?

  1. Sure, you can translate as many articles as you want! In fact, if you want to win this contest, the more articles you have, the better!
  2. The original language is just about the article of the language of the country. So, an article from Chile has Spanish as original language, but you can translate from English, Russian, French, it doesn't matter! As long as you translate an article from Spanish or Portuguese to Arabic, Farsi or Turkish (and the other way around) --Osmar Valdebenito, B1mbo (talk) 21:28, 21 October 2017 (UTC)Reply

Announcement: results of Bridges Across Cultures edit

We are pleased to announce the results of our multilingual wiki-collaboration contest, ‘’’Bridges across Cultures’’’, which has taken place among languages from both Latin America and the Middle East & North Africa in October/November 2017.

ِThe contest was organized by multiple Wikimedia affiliates, including Argentina, Brazil and Chile (Latin America) and Iran, Levant, and Turkey (MENA), with the aim of exchanging cultural experiences and values between the two regions; as the contestants from either Latin America or MENA were asked to write and expand Wikipedia articles related to the rich and unique culture of the other region. In total, 832 articles were created or improved as part of this contest: 427 articles about Latin American culture were expanded in Arabic, Persian and Turkish Wikipedia, while 415 articles about MENA culture were done in Spanish and Portuguese Wikipedia. 64 different participants submitted at least one article to the contest.

As for the results, six prizes are designated for the best performing contestants (with three being dedicated for the best participants from either Latin America or MENA). The prizes will be awarded for the following users who achieved the highest points:

Latin America

  1. Rosarinagazo, Spanish Wikipedia (143 articles, 1210 points).
  2. Tuga1143, Portuguese Wikipedia (117 articles, 1150 points).
  3. MarisaLR, Spanish Wikipedia, (97 articles, 850 points).

Middle East & North Africa

  1. محک, Persian Wikipedia (97 pages, 890 points).
  2. Abdou7878, Arabic Wikipedia (80 pages, 810 points).
  3. Mohammed alzaidy, Arabic Wikipedia (88 pages, 760 points).
  4. علاء فحصي, Arabic Wikipedia (88 pages, 730 points).

Hopefully, we intend to continue and further extend this successful experience in 2018 and in the following years. If you are interested in including your language project in future versions, please get in touch with the contest’s organizers.

Wikipedia Cultural Diversity Observatory: Phase 2 Monitoring the Culture Gap edit

I am writing to tell you that the project Wikipedia Cultural Diversity Observatory (WCDO) has presented a plan for a second phase to extend the project and provide tools based on the data collectede. As a reminder, the WCDO aims at providing valuable strategic data in order to fight for more cultural diversity in each Wikipedia language edition. In the previous phase, we collected the Cultural Context Content (CCC) datasets for all 300 language editions and provided some top priority articles for different topics such as women-men, geolocated, among others (named Top CCC articles). The infrastructure for the project has been set (datasets and website). In this new phase, we plan to create many more tools and visualizations: Top CCC article lists based on community member suggestions, but most importantly, to create a tool to monitor the gaps on a monthly basis and serve it as a newsletter. This way editors are able to constantly see the efforts dedicated to create geolocated articles or cultural context content more in general related to other language editions. Also, we plan to research on marginalized languages in order to see which have more potential to become a new Wikipedia language edition, start creating content about their cultural context ("decolonizing the Internet"), and increase the overall cultural diversity of the project. Most of the project efforts are dedicated to data-compiling and analysis. However, there is a lot of work to do in disseminating the results and tools so they can create more impact in helping local events such as contests. If you think you can join the project, please write us at If you consider this may be helpful, please help us, provide some feedback and endorse the project. You take a look at the project plan here: Thanks in advance for your time. All the feedback is welcome. Best, --Marcmiquel (talk) 13:02, 4 December 2018 (UTC)Reply
