Requests for new languages/Wikisource Cantonese

submitted verification final decision
Discuss the creation of this language project on this page. Votes will be ignored when judging the proposal. Please provide arguments or reasons and be prepared to defend them (see the Language proposal policy).

The language committee needs to verify the language is eligible to be approved.

  • Check that the project does not already exist (see list).
  • Obtain an ISO 639 code
  • Ensure the requested language is sufficiently unique that it could not exist on a more general wiki.
  • Ensure that there are a sufficient number of native editors of that language to merit an edition in that language.
  • The community needs to develop an active test project; it must remain active until approval (automated statistics). It is generally considered active if the analysis lists at least three active, not-grayed-out editors listed in the sections for the previous few months.
  • The community needs to complete required MediaWiki interface translations in that language (about localization, translatewiki, check completion).
  • The community needs to discuss and complete the settings table below:

Proposal edit

Cantonese, or Yue Chinese, is a Sinitic language spoken by about 84 million people. There is a Cantonese Wikipedia with a very active community. I believe that the community is willing to develop a Wikisource project by translating classic works in Literary Chinese or Modern Standard Chinese. --Jonashtand (talk) 17:07, 2 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Discussion edit

  •   Comment I'm not sure what value there is in opening requests for Wikisources before the oldwikisource page is clearly demanding of a new domain. Go, transcribe and translate there.--Prosfilaes (talk) 11:57, 3 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]
  •   Comment Something confused, FWIW, in Requests_for_new_languages/Wikisource_Literary_Chinese, @Deryck Chan: said that "I'm not sure what you mean by "test project" - I don't seem to see an Incubator project for Cantonese Wikisource? ... That's the Cantonese landing page for the Multilingual Wikisource, not a proposal for a standalone "Cantonese Wikisource" site. I don't think anything needs to be "closed" in regards to the coverage of Cantonese texts by Wiktionary, though I can see arguments about which site we should host Cantonese texts in ...", I need to know that if this is a seroius Wikisource request or not. --Liuxinyu970226 (talk) 12:19, 3 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]
  • Chinese Wikisource currently accepts Cantonese literature. But this proposal is slightly different: User:Jonashtand is proposing a new project for Cantonese so that editors can translate classical works into Cantonese. As such, I think the proposal is eligible but I'm personally neutral about it (because I won't have time to contribute to the project). Also I think the current leading database for open-copyright Cantonese literature and translations of classical literature into Cantonese is 粵典文庫. They use an open data licence though one could argue their licence isn't compatible with CC-BY-SA (I am not a lawyer) so I can see why someone might want to duplicate the effort on a WMF site. @Deryck Chan: Here's what Jusjih on zhwiki said: 主张粤语维基分别于中文维基,也表示粤语译音分别于中文译音? --Liuxinyu970226 (talk) 22:01, 5 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
    • Indeed, that's the main use case of Cantonese Wikisource I can think of: translating source texts into Cantonese. Hence I agree this is a valid proposal, it's just that I won't have time to work on it. Deryck C. 13:52, 6 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
  • As for me, I Support such a Wikisource. --Liuxinyu970226 (talk) 00:56, 7 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
  • I agree with the new Wikisource project for Cantonese. As a member of the Cantonese Community for years, the project would be of concerned to our community that seriously enjoy the bonanza in long development. And the risk of lossing of Chinese Wikisource is rising as I speaking here,as there are really huge obliteration against all kinds of dissidents moving on in connected wiki area .I suggest this project could also be a new beginning for mulit-minorities civilization for next decade. Thank you for your attention to this matter, with my great honest. ——Longway22 (talk) 08:12, 17 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]
  •   Strong support I agree to make room for the Cantonese Community as a Cantonese Wikipedian. --Matttest (talk) 01:22, 13 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]
  •   Strong support Could I translate some classical fairy tales into Cantonese? :) Dr. Greywolf (talk) 15:10, 12 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
