This language has been verified as eligible. The language is eligible for a project, which means that the subdomain can be created once there is an active community and a localized interface, as described in the language proposal policy. You can discuss the creation of this language project on this page. Once the criteria are met, the language committee can proceed with the approval and will verify the test project content with a reliable neutral source, such as a professor or expert. If you think the criteria are met, but the project is still waiting for approval, feel free to notify the committee and ask them to consider its approval.A committee member provided the following comment: |
- The community needs to develop an active test project; it must remain active until approval (automated statistics, recent changes). It is generally considered active if the analysis lists at least three active, not-grayed-out editors listed in the sections for the previous few months.
- The community needs to complete required MediaWiki interface translations in that language (about localization, translatewiki, check completion).
- The community needs to discuss and complete the settings table below:

Proposal
edit- (en) Musi language is a language used and spoken predominantly by the Musi ethnic group native to regions along the Musi River. There are more than 1 million residents of southern Sumatran using this language as a first language.
Discussion
edit- In addition to this request from 2014, there is also Requests for new languages/Wikipedia Palembang from 2007. --Jura1 (talk) 10:02, 16 February 2016 (UTC)
- (en) Palembang (Baso Plembang) is the language predominantly spoken by the Palembang ethnic group in South Sumatra, Indonesia. There are at least 500.000 first language speakers of Baso Plembang but it is used by millions in South Sumatra as a lingua franca.
Arguments in favour
edit- Support. I feel like this is a good candidate for a wiki based on another malayic language. BoholMappingAndRoutes (talk) 02:31, 24 January 2022 (UTC)
- I am in, don't put this language into extinction --Andri.h 04:42, 11 April 2008 (UTC)
- Same as Andri.h, protecting before extinction Azmi1995 07:58, 23 May 2008 (UTC)
- Weak support. The language is not just used orally, but also has literary tradition. It has impact not just in Palembang but almost everywhere in southern part of Sumatra. The problem is, it is not clear which community will support the viability of its wikipedia. Kembangraps 09:08, 24 February 2009 (UTC)
- Support I think Wikipedia Palembang must have for Palembang residents..--Lousyi 02:47, 13 June 2010 (UTC)

Support Madurese, Minahasan/Manado, and Palembang are some big languages in Indonesia that haven't got their own Wikipedias, while smaller languages such as Gorontalo have got theirs. Perhaps the biggest obstacle right now is establishing a standard written form, since Palembang is more commonly perceived as a Malay dialect, with the speakers using Malay/Indonesian as written language. I see the Wikipedia article is named Musi language, but nobody use that name in Indonesia to refer to Palembang language. Usually the term Musi refer to a specific dialect of Sekayu/Musi spoken northwest of Palembang, quite different from the dialect in Palembang itself. The Palembang dialect is the lingua franca, so people who speak Sekayu will be able to understand Palembang but not necessarily vice versa. Thus, I prefer Palembang dialect to be the standard of this wiki, and to keep using the name Wikipedia Palembang, do not change it to Musi (as this would create confusion). Masjawad99 (talk) 14:00, 3 December 2018 (UTC)- @Masjawad99: Why support a "language" that has abandoned code? --Liuxinyu970226 (talk) 23:24, 12 June 2019 (UTC)
- @Liuxinyu970226: To be clear, my support is for Palembang as mui, not Palembang as plm. The code for Palembang was merged to Musi on the basis that they are mutually intelligible (and there is indeed no substantial difference between them). But between the terms "Musi" and "Palembang", the latter is much, much more common. My comment above specifically deals about the name, not the language itself. If needed, I have no problem renaming this proposal into "Wikipedia Musi". Masjawad99💬 23:46, 12 June 2019 (UTC)
- @Liuxinyu970226: Ethnologue apparently lists Baso Palembang, Palembang, Palembangnese, and Sekayu as synonyms. What do you think is the best approach? Keep using the name Palembang or change it to Musi? Masjawad99💬 00:10, 13 June 2019 (UTC)
- @Masjawad99: You're too kind-hearted, that said, a violation of LPP is just a violation, it cannot be whitewashed by any so-called "suggestions". --Liuxinyu970226 (talk) 23:29, 12 July 2019 (UTC)
- @Liuxinyu970226: Got it. I will retract my support for now, unless this proposal is moved to /Wikipedia Musi. Masjawad99💬 00:09, 13 July 2019 (UTC)

- Support Palembang/Musi is a prominent Indonesian regional language with significant number of speaker and considerable influence. I was made understand that the request would be done under the name Wikipedia Palembang using the mui code, so I guess it would only a matter of finding and sustaining a stable community for this project to grow. - Support, a lingua franca in Southern Sumatra. -- Si Gam (talk) 11:57, 1 June 2022 (UTC)
- Support, Palembang language (Baso Palembang) has been mistaken for Musi language (Basé Musi) for almost two decades, and it caused a lot of confusion and unnecessary argues for both languages' speakers to perform their contribution on this Wikimedia project. I hope the confusion will end soon by the effort to create the Wikimedia Project for Palembang language since both languages are not mutually intelligible. - Support Forcing (talk) 14:26, 13 September 2022 (UTC)
- Strong support The Palembang language used as lingua franca in southeastern Sumatra, it is the most spoken language there, a lot of people would love to contribute in the development of Palembang Wikipedia. (Dirk Gret (talk) 14:12, 20 September 2022 (UTC))

Arguments against
edit- In the past 9 months, since this proposal was made, there appears to have been no progress. No support, no effort for content creation in Incubator, no effort to add basic localisation. Dead as a doornail so to speak (unfortunately, because a Wikipedia in this language would certainly have a potential audience). Siebrand 11:35, 25 March 2008 (UTC)
- Oppose Oppose Mikhailov Kusserow (talk) 07:01, 25 February 2009 (UTC)
- Oppose iso639-3:plm is abandoned, if this is about Musi, it should be moved to /Wikipedia Musi, otherwise, I don't see any benefit to call it "eligible". --Liuxinyu970226 (talk) 23:25, 12 June 2019 (UTC)
General discussion
edit- The English Wikipedia article was renamed to "Musi language" in 2011. I added the corresponding Wikidata item above (d:Q615660) --Jura1 (talk) 09:59, 16 February 2016 (UTC)
- There is also Requests for new languages/Wikipedia Musi from 2014. https://incubator.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wp/mui has some activity. --Jura1 (talk) 14:23, 24 February 2016 (UTC)
Localisation update
editThere is no observable localisation effort. GerardM 06:39, 4 April 2008 (UTC)
- Currently 0.00% of the most used MediaWiki messages have been localised. Localisation of these messages is a requirement before your request is finally assessed. This is the recent localisation activity for your language. Thanks, GerardM 12:31, 12 November 2008 (UTC)
