This is a proposal for closing and/or deleting a wiki hosted by the Wikimedia Foundation. It is subject to the current closing projects policy.

The proposal is accepted and the proposed actions should be taken.

A Language Committee member provided the following comment:
Only 5 pages in the mainspace, thereof maybe 3 "real" ones. This clearly fulfilles the criterion of "Absence of content since the wiki's creation". Object to closure. This wiki is causing no harm. Why deny speakers of Amharic the opportunity to contribute to this project in the future? Even if the project fails to ever attract contributors, it's not draining resources or manpower. And if people become interested in the site, all the better! Heh, I do disagree with that policy, but fair enough. In general, I am opposed to the closure of wikis unless they are actually causing harm. Closing a tiny project just because it doesn't meet an activity or content threshold is like rearranging deckchairs, in my view. It only means that speakers of minority languages will have a smaller choice of projects to contribute to. Free content should be for everyone, not just for speakers of popular languages. Strong keep. I am a bureaucrat at Amharic wikipedia and have just learned of this. I consider the repeated nomination of this project antagonistic and stress that the closure of this project would do considerable harm to my good faith. It is difficult to weigh this damage against the supposed benefit, because I see no benefit whatsoever in closing the project - unless perhaps it is for the personal "lulz" of some who like habitually messing with things they do not understand. WMF will survive if this project is left open and you were to stop being a busy-body. - This is only the second proposal, after the first one was closed as part of the reform process when the new policy was put in place. This does not exactly look as if this project would be a special target of closure proposals. Your attack against the proposer is also quite misplaced, since he is not someone who nominates projects for closure often or would love to see projects closed. --MF-W 16:10, 2 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
  - In fact, I'm quite the opposite of what you're saying (I've tried to save wikis a few times). If you want to keep it open, add some more content -- a win-win situation. I just don't think ~5 pages is enough, and projects with many more have been closed for this reason. I notified the Amharic Wikipedia community here, so please don't blame me for not noticing.     - The fact that you simply point me to some pages full of legalese written by who knows, and say "so there", as a substitute for any logical reasoning why a harmless project set up in a language you don't understand should be deleted, is one of the main reasons why I am losing good faith with this project. And I know I have already seen this project up for deletion at least twice before this, despite the titling "Closure of Amharic Wikiquote 2".       - Please not that this is a proposal for closure, not deletion. In the box at the top, we can read "Proposed action regarding the content: transfer to incubator:Wq/am". It means that Amharic Wikiquotes could also be edited on Incubator, and moved back later to an own wiki when it's active enough. This proposal is made under a rule which says "Absence of content since the wiki's creation is a valid reason [for closing and moving back to Incubator]". There are 6 pages currently in the main space, and the oldest version of the Main Page is from 2004. A reason behind giving the possibility(!) to close such projects is that they often, sadly, become spambot targets. Amharic is a language of Ethiopia, a part of the world like India where it is said that time moves much slower. The people are not running any kind of a rat race, especially in the information society. They typically prefer to do things at a very gradual rate. This sounds like "start producing content right now or you will get shelved" coming from you guys. Post-closure comments

Amharic supporters should not desesperate. They don't even need to initiate their test in Incubator if they wish to create a project for citations. They can already initiate their project within Amharic Wikipedia, where they will also get the support of Amharic-speaking users to develop there a Wikiquote project, with the active support of local administrators. They can even ask for a specific "q:" namespace to be added, so that when it will be enough developed, it will be easily migrated to a separate wiki without breaking links (they would just need to request the import of their local "q:" namespace to the main namespace of their new wiki, all other pages in their Wikipedia will continue to link correctly to the new wiki instead of the local namespace one it has been migrated). (and I suggest them to use a distinctive prefix for naming templates needed for pages in that namespace to help migrate them to the new wiki. Or they would also use the prefix "Wq/" for their local pages.
In fact I'm convinced that all Wikiquotes in Incubator should be hosted instead within the associated active Wikipedia in the same language because experimentation will have more contributors seeing it are there will be an active community and the support of their local admins.
The same could be done for experimental Wiktionaries; or Wikivoyages, or Wikinews, or Wikiversities (Wikibooks could cause a problem unless there's an extension of the local wiki policy of Wikipedia, allowing such creation of books, provided that they are kept in their own separate namespace) that are currently in Incubator, going to their associated Wikipedia as a local subproject if there's an active one for that language. They can also request to the Language committee to open a wiki using the experimentation performed in their wiipedia instead of here. The migration can also use the same tools as those used here, if they have carefully used either a naming prefix (like here) or a namespace in their Wikipedia.
The same could also be done if a wiki currently written in a macrolanguage (mixing several languages), wants to prepare a split for "dialects" to promote as separate languages : they can use also a namespace or prefix naming convention for creating pages in the new language to promote for later inclusion in a separate wiki. This could be useful to locally avoid (sterile) linguistic battles on pages (where a major dialect always wins against all minor dialects that want better protection and preservation of their specific content or specific orthography or script), by separating these pages, and allow language variants to have local experimentation prior to request a new wiki to the Language Committee (this could be used not only for Wikipedia projects, but also other projects within the same macrolanguage and needing a separation of "dialects"/"language")
For example a Wikisource for books written in "Cajun French" could be hosted by the standard French Wikisource in a subproject, and articles Wikipedia written in Cajun French could be as well hosted on the standard French Wikipedia also in a local subproject. Texts of songs written in Picard (or Ch'timi) could be also hosted in French Wikisource. Note that Picard (pcd) and Cajun French (frc) both have ISO 639-3 codes and there's also a Picard Wikipedia, but French Wikisource is a better host for using tools available in French Wikisource.
Poestry written in British English "dialects" (e.g. Bootling English) could be Wikisourced as well in a subproject of the standard English Wikisource. verdy_p (talk) 02:53, 15 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]
- Wikisource projects are already broad; the English Wikisource covers works written in all descendants of Old English, Old English, Middle English, Modern English and Scots, and any dialects thereof, presumably as well as any English creoles (though that has not been tested in my experience.) I believe most Wikisources cover all dialects and related languages; the German Wikisource was upset with the creation of the NDS Wikisource, for example, and old languages are usually included in their modern versions where feasible.--Prosfilaes (talk) 06:17, 9 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]
