Gracias. --dferg ☎ talk 17:21, 4 January 2011 (UTC)

Updating the news

There should be a better way to unify the news on this page with site-wide news for translators. SJ · talk | translate 05:23, 1 March 2011 (UTC)

Though I have no idea how to make it feasible, it would be nice either to share news between here and Goings-on or to merge it into Goings-on and make sure we could find everything new on one and sole page. I am not sure which is more preferable for our translators. --Aphaia 17:41, 7 March 2011 (UTC)

When I was trying setting options there, I came across the following.

There was a default language setting there — en.English. But I noticed that a couple of words there were non-British: "diffs" and "dialogs". So what do you think I did? Bingo: I tried switching the interface language to en.BR. Then I saved changes.

What do you think I came across having reentered to the settings? Bingo: the words remained the same!

These are the links to the Oxford Dictionary to check my claim: dialogue and diff.

Thanks,

 Lincoln Josh 16:13, 8 March 2011 (UTC)
The place to enter British English words into the MediaWiki interface is on translatewiki.net. I assume that the message you spotted with dialog in it hasn't been translated yet. Diff I wouldn't have thought would be translated, since it appears to me to be a computer term, of fairly recent vintage, but I don't travel in software engineer circles. Is there a British English version of 'diff', as a software term? Anyway, if you would like to be part of the effort to create the Mediawiki interface in British English, then you can become a translator on translatewiki.net, translating to the en-gb locale. I admit you're quite right with diff — as it's a fairly new word. Lincoln Josh

What is the best FA of each language version that uses mostly the sources in its own language

I needs your help, especially the help from those who can use multi-language. I am trying to assess the featured articles across diverse languages on Wikipedia in order to find what factors affect the difference of the quality of the featured articels by language.

As you know, I cannot manually evaluate all featured articles from diverse Wikipedia languages because the total number of featured article approved over all the languages reaches thousands. I need to select a representative that explains the quality of the featured article group of each language on Wikipedia as a sample for the quality evaluation.

I established the criteria for selecting the sample as follows:

  • Not translated, that is the representative article does not use other language source as reference as less as possible
  • concerns history, particularly historical person whom most sources about was written in its own language
  • When a language does not have a featured article satisfying the criterion above, the article from other topic, for example geography can be a representative article for the test.
  • When a language has more than one article meeting with the criteria above, the best quality article is preferable

I have found the representative article candidates for each language as seen in the table below. Please give me your opinion on the candidate list, and the advice for updating the list if you know the better one for candidate for what I try to do, with short explanation of why you recommend the new article. cooldenny (talk) 02:09, 16 March 2011 (UTC)

World Identity

It will be better if we have unique identity in the world so that everyone knows about us.— The preceding unsigned comment was added by Harrysri (talk)

Who is "us" in your context? Volunteering Wikimedia-wide translators is our identity I've thought for years. Is it enough for you? If not, why? What is your proposing alternative? --Aphaia 11:53, 4 August 2011 (UTC)

Voice

Am having an idea to change all the text files into voice files taking wiki to new levels. For example I can speak malayalam well, then I can articulate those written contents in this language. This will help Wikipedia to be more effective in its mission. We can save the voice file in compressed form, so that it consumes less space and is more effective. This can help the dumb and blind reach the rich knowledge base of Wikipedia. It's a complex process, but it's a revolution too. I am having a detailed plan for the same. Kindly someone tell me where to submit my ideas. Also please comment on it.

Good Idea, why not capture the tacit knowledge of the world in this manner so that this becomes a knowledge bank which every one has access to. Global knowledge in one place — The preceding unsigned comment was added by 122.163.39.22 (talk) 19:17, 10 dic 2011 (UTC)
This is not the correct place to discuss it. Please write on Wikimedia Forum (where this section will be moved shortly). Nemo 19:33, 10 December 2011 (UTC)
