Grants talk:Project/Rapid/Wikimedians of Cameroon User Group/Wiki Loves Earth 2018 in Cameroon

Latest comment: 5 years ago by WJifar (WMF) in topic Approval of new report deadline

Hi Geugeor. Thank you for this proposal and for the team's efforts to organize Wiki Loves Earth in Cameroon. We are excited to support this contest for the second year. We have a few comments/questions before moving forward with approval.

  1. How did the upload sessions and workshops go last year? What will you be doing differently this year?
  2. In last year's report you mentioned "we want to establish contacts with the authorities of the Ministry of Tourism of Cameroon to obtain official authorizations for the access and taking of photos of the sites". Have you be able to establish those contacts? If not, what impact will that have on the contest?
  3. Please provide more details for each of the budget items. For example, how much will each upload session cost and what does it include, what is included in the press conference budget, etc.? Also, we don't support t-shirts for all participants in a project. Please let us know what the t-shirts will be used for.
  4. We can no longer support cash prizes. We can support material prizes such as gift certificates, photo equipment, books, etc.
  5. It's great that you have a goal of "15% distinct photos used in Wikipedia articles". From last year's contest, 22 distinct images (3%) have been used on Wikimedia projects. Are you planning any specific activities to encourage people to use photos in articles? Perhaps you can include adding photos as part of the upload session or have an additional prize for the person who adds the most number of photos?

Please let us know if you have any questions. Best, Alex Wang (WMF) (talk) 18:40, 15 May 2018 (UTC)Reply

edit

Hello Alex Wang (WMF) (talk), I apologize for the late reaction. Below are my answers :

  1. Upload sessions last year only consisted of uploading participants' photos without illustrating the articles. This year, it is the members of the user group who will illustrate the articles during the sessions organized after the publication of the results.
  2. Some authorities we have approached have presented the procedure which seemed to be slow and long and given the lack of time, we have not been able to do it. Which means we could be calling to pay to take pictures in some sites.
  3. The budget items :
  • Upload sessions - 117.00 USD: This is the internet connection (for uploading photos and illustrating articles) and aperitif during meetings.
    • Press conference - 180.00 USD: Transportation of journalists, User group volunteers and aperitif.
    • Gifts for jury members - 135.00 USD: Envelopes for the 3 members of the jury.
    • WLE Photo expedition - 180.00 USD: Transportation of photographers for photo campaigns on some sites.
    • Award ceremony and exhibition - 324.00 USD: Contains the printing of the 15 photos of the exhibition, furniture manufacture and aperitif.
    • Regarding the T-shirts, it is for us a motivating factor for the other participants who could not get a prize. For User Group volunteers and jury, it is a tool of promotion of the contest and the User Group.

4. Noted: We will convert the different amounts into materials.

5. As a strategy: adding the photos to the articles will be done by the members of the User group because the majority of the participants do not have a knowledge of the computer tool as a whole and of Wikipedia in particular.

Hi Geugeor Georges. Apologies for the delayed response. Please note we cannot give cash prizes in any form. Please confirm the gifts for the jury will not be cash, but some other type of recognition. We also cannot support t-shirts for all participants in the contest. You can give t-shirts to volunteer organizers and to the top participants. Please adjust the budget accordingly and we can approve. Thanks, Alex Wang (WMF) (talk)

Additional questions edit

Hello Geugeor Georges, thank you for answering Alex's questions. We appreciate you adjusting the t-shirt amount and changing the cash prizes. However, I would like to ask another change on the jury prizes.

  1. Generally, jury members receive very small prizes such as certificates or vouchers for small amounts. Could you please change the prizes to something equivalent to 15,000 each. You can choose other prizes or replace it with gift vouchers or certificates.
  2. Secondly, I noticed that your new budget total has changed from what you have put in the probox. Could you please adjust it so it's the same in both places.

Please make the changes and we can move forward with next steps. Best regards, WJifar (WMF) (talk) 22:20, 7 June 2018 (UTC)Reply

Additional time edit

Hello WJifar (WMF), I have some difficulties to finalize the writing of my reports and I wish a small postponement of the date please. Thank you for your understanding --Geugeor Georges (talk) 22:35, 11 September 2018 (UTC)Reply

Hello Geugeor Georges, please let me know when we can expect your report and I can change the date of your final report in our system. Best regards, WJifar (WMF) (talk) 02:35, 19 September 2018 (UTC)Reply
Hello WJifar (WMF), It is possible to send the first 2 reports by October 6, 2018.
Regarding the rapid grant for the training sessions in Buea and Bamenda, we started but the growing insecurity in these cities led us to reprogram the other sessions (after the presidential elections).
Thank you one more for your good understanding
