Grants talk:Project/Rapid/UG MAI/Maithili Wikipedia Mission 10

Latest comment: 7 years ago by Delphine (WMF) in topic Request for extension of reporting

Hi Biplab Anand and Zeetendra. Thank you for this request. Mission 10 is a great idea and it would be a great accomplishment to get to 10,000 articles! We have a few questions and look forward to your responses:

  1. The number of participants looks very low (15) for the number of articles you are hoping to get and for what is calculated in the budget. Please reassess.
  2. Currently there are 9 active editors, 4 very active editors, and 59 total editors on Maithili Wikipedia (as of October 2016). Considering the relatively low number of editors, It seems very ambitious to think that the community will be able to write 4,000 articles in one month. Every editor would have to write 60 articles to reach 4,000. Do you think this is feasible? Do you want to increase the timeline of the contest or revise your goals?
  3. One of your goals is to "have more outreach". What does this mean? What would success looks like in terms of outreach?
  4. Asian Wikipedia Month has been a successful online writing contest the last two years. Have you looked into how the have organized communications around their contest?
  5. Asian Wikipedia Month used the Fountain tool to judge articles submitted during the competition and were very happy with it. You should contact Le Loy if you have questions about the tool.
  6. What is the goal of the outreach events? We have seen general outreach events to be not very succesful in recruiting new editors to the projects. Without local experienced Wikimedians to conduct follow-up events and provide mentorship, there is letting retention of new editors. How are the four cities chosen? What type of follow-up is planned?
  7. It would be great to see more endorsements of the project from your community. This section gives us a sense of the level of interest in and potential engagement from your community.
  8. Please confirm you are asking to purchase a projector for the user group.
  9. What is your goal for organizing an award ceremony?

We look forward to your responses. Cheers, Alex Wang (WMF) (talk) 23:13, 5 December 2016 (UTC)Reply

@AWang (WMF): Thanks for the quick response over the proposal. I am glad to answers your question regarding the proposal.
  • The number of participants looks very low (15) for the number of articles you are hoping to get and for what is calculated in the budget. Please reassess.
Actually we are talking about the number of active editors (15) for the whole project duration. But the number of participants should be increased for sure. We are calculated the budget according to near about 100 participants.
  • Currently there are 9 active editors, 4 very active editors, and 59 total editors on Maithili Wikipedia (as of October 2016). Considering the relatively low number of editors, It seems very ambitious to think that the community will be able to write 4,000 articles in one month. Thanks for the stats. It is true that we are lacking active editors on Maithili Wikipedia. But how we feel about the contest is, this is not a normal edit-a-thon, this is a challenge for us to compete it. However the recent activities on Maithili Wikipedia (within 5 days there are 700 new articles created) seems going good so we are not thinking to change the timeline of the contest right now. If we need to extend it for a week or 10 days i will inform you here.
  • One of your goals is to "have more outreach". What does this mean? What would success looks like in terms of outreach?
Oh! there is a typo mistake. I have changed this to have more meetups with the active Wikipedians and newbie Wikipedians as well as Maithili Institution and other legal bodies working here for the Maithili language. It help us to get new wikipedians for Maithili Wikipedia.
  • Asian Wikipedia Month has been a successful online writing contest the last two years. Have you looked into how the have organized communications around their contest?
Yes we have looked into it. FYKI Me and Biplab are the local organizers of WAM this year.
  • Asian Wikipedia Month used the Fountain tool to judge articles submitted during the competition and were very happy with it. You should contact Le Loy if you have questions about the tool.
We have already made contact to Le and he made a tool for us.
  • What is the goal of the outreach events? We have seen general outreach events to be not very succesful in recruiting new editors to the projects. Without local experienced Wikimedians to conduct follow-up events and provide mentorship, there is letting retention of new editors. How are the four cities chosen? What type of follow-up is planned?
The goal of the outreach event is to get new wikipedians on Maithili Wikipedia. The 4 cities are chosen on the basis of one or more Maithili Wikipedians reside there and Majority of Maithili speakers there. I have already mention that, in those 4 cities we have already active Wikipedians who take care of the newbie Wikipedians as we planned after and during the contest.
  • It would be great to see more endorsements of the project from your community. This section gives us a sense of the level of interest in and potential engagement from your community.
Yeah sure we have informed our community to endorse this project.
  • Please confirm you are asking to purchase a projector for the user group.
Yes for the presentation related work and the recent activities of this UG. We confirmed that we are asking to purchase a projector for the UG.
  • What is your goal for organizing an award ceremony?
The goal towards organizing an award ceremony is to felicitate as well as appreciate the winners of this event.

Hi Zeetendra. Thank you for providing the detailed responses. Please update your measures of success based on the responses. My understanding is that you expect 15 people to be active during the entire duration, but 50 to participate at some point during the month (you said 100, but only budget for 50 certificates so I am unclear what the proposed participation is). If the outreach events will be organized in cities where there are active Wikimedians, then extra funds for travel and accommodation do not seem necessary. Can you please let us know if this is the case? Thanks so much, Alex Wang (WMF) (talk) 19:45, 7 December 2016 (UTC)Reply
@AWang (WMF): Thanks for the response once again. We have updated the measure of success section on the proposal. We have requested for 50 certificates on the proposal as we expected 30 participants and few volunteer will join the contest online and offline. I agree with your thought but in every chosen cities we have only one or two wikimedians, so for that organizing team have to join the event to make it fruitful. The claculated budget for the outreach may be minimize according to the event.+cc @Zeetendra:--Biplab Anand (Talk) 09:39, 8 December 2016 (UTC)Reply
Hi @AWang (WMF):, We have done the necessary amendment on the proposal, after the community discussion. As we all community members are engaged on the Mission 10, we have cut off the 4 meetups from the proposal. We have added a workshop events for the Mission 10, We hope that it help us to reach the goal. Thanks--Biplab Anand (Talk) 07:32, 14 December 2016 (UTC)Reply
