Follow-up Questions from Programme Officer

edit

Hello @MaroBos,

Thank you for putting in a rapid fund grant application. Here are some questions we would love to have your responses to:

Context I've included here links to your project page and grant applications and reports. This will provide more background context to the reader. Please feel free to add onto the list.

Questions related to your application

  • Referencing questions 2 and 3, could you provide examples of the templates that you have in mind? On building a unified coding / translation agreed by the community, are there wiki communities that you plan to consult or learn from so you don't have to re-invent the wheel? What type of basic basic HTML coding for editors do you see would be useful?
  • Referencing question 5, what type of profile, experience do you have in mind for a training and what are the other complementary support you hope to secure from hiring a training (e.g. preparation of content, training resource/ materials)?
  • Question 15-18: This section is well thought through. On main open metrics, do the targets refers to the number of participants surveyed? On core metrics, do you have a baseline in mind when setting the targets? What % increment do we hope to achieve from baseline based on this activity implementation? Similar to content contribution, what is the baseline/ average contribution without activity?
  • Question 20: On merchandise, training gift and kits, what do you have in mind? Would it be available for all participants who attend the training/ edit-a-thon sessions? If they attend more than one session, is the plan still to distribute the same set of training gift and kits?

Thank you.

Hi Jacqueline JChen (WMF),

Sorry for the late response as we are observing the solemnity of the Holy Week last week. Here are my answers to the questions:

  • Referencing questions 2 and 3, could you provide examples of the templates that you have in mind? On building a unified coding / translation agreed by the community, are there wiki communities that you plan to consult or learn from so you don't have to re-invent the wheel? What type of basic basic HTML coding for editors do you see would be useful?
For Central Bikol Wiktionary, templates are used for each word entry that automatically categorizes the page into basic parts of speech, etymology, and how words are derived when used. Templates like these help the administrator manage the project. I plan to conduct community consultation on our discussion page to get the community's approval for the unified coding of these templates. I am not going to restructure current working templates; my goal for this project is to add more specific categories and additional templates for other types of words like colloquials, or jargons.
  • Referencing question 5, what type of profile, experience do you have in mind for a training and what are the other complementary support you hope to secure from hiring a training (e.g. preparation of content, training resource/ materials)?
In our previous experience building the Central Bikol Wiktionary, most templates were duplicated from the Spanish Wiktionary. In this project, we aim to prepare our site for the possible creation of a global template wherein each project would not need a localized version. It is problematic when there’s a sudden shift of editors who maintain a wikiproject template. Some terminologies are unsuitable to be understood since they were translated verbatim when there’s no actual translation.
Hiring a trainer will help us familiarize ourselves with developing, structuring, and designing the site. As editors, we know what makes a suitable user interface for a newbie. We, as wiki editors and the HTML developer will work hand in hand on the wikiproject’s overall structure, layout, and content elements.
I'm looking for someone with experience in technical education and training for the training position, preferably with experience in the Wikimedia community. The suitable candidate should have established expertise in technology, including knowledge of open-source software, technical writing, and software development. They should also be able to collaborate well with other team members and possess excellent communication skills.
On main open metrics, the target refers to the number of participants surveyed or interviewed before and after the changes have been made to the project. The targets on core metrics were based on the current performance of editors in Central Bikol Wiktionary. These targets will be the baseline. We will use the second and third months of the project timeline to measure the percentage increment of editors retained and willingness to conduct their own Wikipedia training of all the participants that have been part of the project.
We aim for 100-200 contributions per editor outside the formal activities.
  • Question 20: On merchandise, training gift and kits, what do you have in mind? Would it be available for all participants who attend the training/ edit-a-thon sessions? If they attend more than one session, is the plan still to distribute the same set of training gift and kits?
It's common for training sessions or edit-a-thons to offer participants some form of educational material or promotional items. Whether or not these items are available to all participants and if they are the same for each session would depend on the organizer of the event. It's important to consider the budget and planning required for distributing these items fairly and efficiently. I am hoping not to redistribute the same kits for repeat participants.
Best regards,

Follow-up Questions from Grants Committee

edit

Dear @MaroBos,

My name is Ghozi. I'm a member of ESEAP Funds Committee. Nice to e-meet you.

Thanks for putting your idea into applying Rapid Funds. I really appreciate your time and effort as an Individual Wikimedian for this. I have follow-up questions regarding your proposal. Please find it below.

  • [Question 2 & 9] Do you have any survey for Wikimedian in the Philippines who are interested in this field but haven't got the opportunity to learn more? If you have a network in the targeted schools, that will help you to get the participant.
  • [Question 5] Have you got support to run this activity from fellow Wiki Advocates Philippines? You can ask them (organizer + trainers) and put their endorse here. Running an activity as an individual could be overwhelming for Lead Organizer. Collaboration with other Wikimedians is one key to organized a successful activity :)
  • [Question 15] Do you also plan to create a new modules for all the activity? This is an example of tutorial (1) (2) (3) from Wikidata Indonesia. I hope this give you reference to put any tutorial and module into your documentation.
  • [Other] Could you give the details for the topic and how many hours for each session? This question is related to how you program the activity.

Looking forward to hearing from you. Happy holiday!

Hi GhoziSeptiandri,

Thank you for your additional questions. Here are my answers:

  1. No formal survey was conducted that inspired this endeavor, but we have received some invitations from the community to conduct this kind of training. We are looking at partnering with schools directly affiliated with our editors.
  2. Wiki Advocates Philippines User Group highly support this project. I am planning to invite User:Kunokuno and User:Brazal.dang to be facilitators of the Wikipedia Trainings that we will include in our sessions. Like you, I strongly believe in collaboration as this inspires and moves and makes all our projects successful. :)
  3. Thank you for this reference! We will evaluate our topics and see how we can incorporate this or use this guide in planning for our training.
  4. We are looking at doing 4-hour to 6-hour sessions within 4 weeks for the training and will use a remaining couple of months for project evaluation.

Best regards, MaroBos (talk) 13:10, 11 April 2023 (UTC)Reply

Hi @MaroBos,

Your grant application has been approved

edit

Hello @MaroBos,

Congratulations, your grant application has been approved.

Thank you for taking time to respond to the questions.

While you have answered our questions, there are still areas that remain unclear from our perspective. For example (for me) the question around templates and metrics and for @GhoziSeptiandri) the programme and curriculum structure/ details as well as how to sustain the interest and participation of trainees to ensure course completion and competency.

Let's continue to keep in touch and I'll encourage you to use this talk page to document discussions, progress or use it as a resource page so that we can support you (in addition to Wiki Advocates Philippines) as you progress. Of course, this is if you have the bandwidth and find it useful. =)

All the best!

Additional Resources

edit

Hello @MaroBos,

I'm starting a thread on resource sharing here. Please feel free to add resources about your project and we'll do the same if we come across any materials that may be useful.

Thank you.

Request for Project Timeline Extension

edit

Hello Davit and Veronica,

I would like to request a 2-month extension on my project. I have been assisting our affiliate in conducting several activities, and I was not able to keep track of the project. There are still sessions I need to run. I hope this is considered. Thanks.

MaroBos (talk) 07:42, 3 October 2023 (UTC)Reply
