1. What is the change that you are trying to bring about and why is this important.

Hatch-A-Wiki Project has been a success since its pilot program in 2021. It successfully jump started the development of three local language wikiprojects in the Philippines. For the past couple of years, related activities under the Rapid Grants program have been working on these three wikiprojects under incubator. And it greatly helped the development of Incubator projects.

However, since those rapid grants are almost always under a certain campaign, driven by a focus on certain topics like gender representation, climate and human rights advocacies and language preservation, it seems that the technical side of developing these wikiprojects have been put aside for a while. I am hoping that by leading this project, the team will be able to work and focus more on these technical errors and improve the user-experience of our new editors.

The sustainability of these wikiprojects rely on both new and experienced editors. On wiki user experience is very important in engaging new contributors and directly impacts user retention. Initially, when we launched the Hatch-A-Wiki project in 2021, we aimed to develop both the content and the front-end coding of these wikiprojects to make contributing easy and relatable to our community. We may have failed to address on improving the technical side of this project, but we are aware that there's still more work that needs to be done.

2. Describe your main approaches or strategies to achieve these changes and why you think they will be effective.

This year, we are looking at involving communities with technical expertise in front-end coding or engage potential editors that has interest in this field. We will build connection with schools offering technical courses to pursue the possibility of using open access platforms in enhancing the skills of their students.

In the past years, we have centered on engaging communities on developing content. Or have networked with stakeholder focus on improving articles. We have neglected to also build the community on the technical side. With these approach we know that we can make our community more sustainable, and will be able to promote other types of contribution on wiki.

3. What are the activities you will be developing and delivering as part of these approaches or strategies?

Edit-a-thons with focus on improving templates

We will conduct edit-a-thon that will focus on creating, improving and updating wiki templates on Bikol Wiksyunaryo and Wikisambit. We are also going to check modules that have been missing and/or was translated verbatim that causes some templates to work or create conflict with other functions.

Build a unified coding / translation agreed by the community

We are going to start conversations with the active editing community on what is the best way to handle translations for modules and templates to avoid further technical errors. We are going to unify the translations to all the wikiprojects under Hatch-A-Wiki Project, through a guide that can be used by the present and future editors.

Train potential editors on front-end coding

We will host training for basic HTML coding for editors with potential interest in this field to help build a more sustainable editing community. We are also going to train active editors on how to become wikiproject administrators and encourage to be more proactive in holding roles like this to help manage our local wikis.

I will run this project as an individual, but I will invite interested Wiki Advocates editors to participate in the training for our team's sustainability. I am also hoping to hire a trainer for some of the sessions if there is a need for upskilling.

This project has obvious but indirect impact on knowledge equity. We are looking at addressing this problem not by focusing on direct solutions but on the process of achieving the desired outcome. We believe that if contributing on wiki is much easier, user-friendly, and more inclusive, we can engage more editors to improve the content gap we are trying to address.

For this year, we will network with schools offering technical courses. We will also engage current editors that has interest in coding and improving user-experience on wiki. We will connect with programmers that are also interested contributing to wikiprojects but doesn't know where to start.

10. In what ways are you actively seeking to contribute towards creating a safer, supportive, more equitable environment for participants?

We will observe the Universal Code of Conduct and Friendly Space Policy all through out the project. We will dedicate some time to discuss this to participants and will directly address abuse that will happen on the event.

For this project, we will utilize the community portals of Central Bikol Wiktionary, Central Bikol and Tagalog Wikiquote and their respective social media channels.
