I think you should more precisely define measures of success. In general organizing lectures about gender-equality issues is out of scope for Wikimedia movement, as we are not pro-feminist activist organization but an organization focused on creating encyclopedia written from neutral point of view. Well - maybe - pro-men bias in Wikipedias is an issue, so decreasing it is valid reason for the project, but in terms of efects upon Wikimedia projects - what exactly you expect to have effects and how do you want to measure them? I guess this is the key question here, which I cannot find an answer in your application. Polimerek (talk) 10:17, 9 June 2016 (UTC)Reply

Thank you for your comments, Polimerek, we have updated our measures of success and revised the proposal to make it more clear, we hope! To answer more specifically the points you are mentioning, we think organizing presentations on how to write in a gender-neutral way fits completely with Wikipedia’s neutral point of view (not that easy to reach as such). In the proposal we didn’t say or meant to imply that we would like to make Wikipedia a “pro-feminist activist organization”. The assumptions behind the word “feminism” in the community often lead to very strong reactions which can hurt… Feminism often seems to be seen as a extremist position, but as we explain it in the proposal we are aiming at equality and we think it is in the scope of Wikipedia. We had many interrogations about using the f word, but we decided to use it because at the moment there are still big representation issues on the side of women (or “pro-men bias” as you say – which isn’t the opposite of feminism but a far more unequal position) and some feminist methods are very interesting and constructive, for everyone, and we are sure Wikipedia could benefit from them. Hi Lfurter and the entire Just for the Record team. Thank you for your grant proposal and the substantial updates you have made to the request. We are excited about the important work you have been doing the last year and looking forward to supporting you with continued and expanded activities. We see your model as innovative and promising in helping to address the gender gap and in increasing awareness and teaching skills about addressing bias on Wikipedia more generally. We understand that quantitative metrics are difficult in this line of work beyond the immediate editing and participantion at your events. However, we believe that the outreach, awareness building, and larger analysis you are doing of the issues is important. We will continue our discussion on how to best assess impact and share stories about learning. Cheers, Alex Wang (WMF) (talk) 14:21, 29 June 2016 (UTC)Reply
