Proposed participation

edit

I have been actively contributing to Tamil Wikipedia for over 7 years now. I am a member of the Wikimedia Community User Group of Sri Lanka. I participated in the Tamil Wikipedia 10th Anniversary Celebrations held in Chennai, India in 2013 and Train The Trainer program in Bengaluru, India in 2016. My colleague, Mr. Mayooranathan is considered ‘Father of Tamil Wikipedia’ as he created the first interface for Tamil Wikipedia and have been a great contributor for over 14 years.

The Wikimedian community in Sri Lanka was invited to take part in the upcoming Global Voices Summit to be hold in Colombo on December 2 and 3.

I, myself and Mr. Mayooranathan expressed our interest to participate after being approached by Subhashish Panigrahi, a member of both the Global Voices and Wikimedia communities.

At the Summit, Mayooranathan and I will be presenting a short talk about Wikipedia in Tamil, as well as to set-up a booth where we can share our experiences and demonstrate basic editing skills to Summit participants. We will also participate in the roundtable discussion “Who Decides What Languages We Use Online?”

Endorsements

  • Global Voices Summit is a great platform for sharing knowledge with a global community, and grow collaboration between communities. The Sri Lankan Wikimedians can use the opportunity to harvest contributors to Wikimedia projects whereas the Global Voices community can contribute towards the best practices of citizen journalism. I personally would like to wear both my Wikimedia and GV hats to be part of this. Fully endorse these friends from Sri Lanka. Subhashish Panigrahi (talk) 17:49, 16 October 2017 (UTC)
  • Global Voices Summit is one of the good summits where both Wikimedia and GV people may jointly work in the various project. I personally engage with both Wikimedia and GV. My full support with these friends. -Hasivetalk • 11:53, 17 October 2017 (UTC)
  • I endorse this grant request on behalf of UG-LK. It would be great to have participation from the local ta.wiki community. Rehman 15:43, 17 October 2017 (UTC)
  • In name of the Summit organizing team of which I am a part, we would very much like to count on the participation of Sivakosaran & Mayooranathan at our event. When I reached out to them and during our call, they expressed much interest in exploring opportunities for collaboration and to share their work on Wikipedia Tamil with our international community, but also with local attendees. At each of our biennial Summits, we like to invite members of like-minded organizations to share their own experiences and explore opportunities for collaboration with our community. We are especially excited about our emerging collaboration with the Wikimedia movement, and this would further enhance that relationship. It's especially important to ensure that encourage participation from other parts of the country and it would be great to have both of them attend to participate in our roundtable discussion about multilingualism on the web, as well as in the workshop spaces where they can provide interactive editing tutorials.
