WMCON: Invitation to lead partnerships related sessions with the Wikimedia Foundation edit

Hi,

The Partnerships and Global Reach team from the Wikimedia Foundation will be hosting few sessions during Wikimedia Conference 2017 in Berlin.

Session 1: Increasing awareness of Wikipedia: How to forge strategic partnerships to achieve this goal?

Session 2: Partnerships Clinic: Warning signs and how to deal with them

Session 3: Sharing talks: Awareness / Reading

We'd like to invite you to join us in planning, leading and participating in any or all of these sessions. It would be great to have a diverse set of experiences and insights as we guide the audience to the goal of the session. Particularly, we want the session participants to have the following outcomes:

They walk away with concrete ideas on how they can raise awareness in their country through partnerships and how they can find such partners. They will recognize when a partnership is in trouble, learn how to address it during program design, and be aware of exit strategies to deal with such situations. They will have good examples and motivation to replicate success stories in their local contexts.

Would you like to join us? We will be happy to chat with you anytime this week to quickly coordinate how we can be working together. Please let us know as soon as possible. Let me know if you have any questions. You can reach me at rayyakkannu wikimedia.org

Thanks, Ravishankar Ayyakkannu, Manager, Strategic Partnerships, Asia, Wikimedia Foundation. --22:34, 23 March 2017 (UTC)Reply

Wikimedia diversity - What happened at the conference and how to follow up edit

Hello Rehman,
We are messaging you now because you signed up as an ambassador for Wikimedia Diversity Conference 2017. We are sharing this message far and wide, so apologies in advance if you are receiving this message twice.

During the conference, we dedicated a full afternoon to discussing the strategic direction and what it means for the work on diversity in the Wikimedia movement. Compiling the outcomes of those conversations, we summarized the key problems and solutions identified, and we created a summary statement. But the conversation is far from over! We still need to hear from diversity ambassadors: (1) what does working for diversity mean at your local context?; (2) what are the needs that should be addressed; (3) what resources are relevant for these identified needs?

We know that diversity gains meaning in context, and this is why we need to hear every voice. Please take a few minutes to go over to the diversity conversation page and add your comments.

If you’d like to stay in touch, and share your experience working for diversity with others, add your profile on our group here.

Thank you and see you on the wiki,
Sara (talk)

New beta feature on first wikis: the FileExporter edit

Hi! Thanks again for your input on the new “Move files to Commons” feature. On June 25th, it was released as a beta feature to first wikis: mediawiki.org and German, Persian and Arabic Wikipedia. Some improvements have been made since. If you want to export local files from these first wikis to Wikimedia Commons, you’ll need to enable the beta feature “FileExporter” on these wikis. Next steps for the wish “confirmation prompt for the rollback link” edit

Hello, a while ago you participated in a feedback round about a proposal how accidental clicks on the rollback link could be avoided. Thanks again for sharing your thoughts and ideas!
Looking at the feedback and the rollback situation in different wikis, the development team decided how to approach this wish: As a default, most wikis won’t have a confirmation. But users who wish to have one, can enable it in their preferences, which will add a confirmation prompt to the rollback link on the diff page and on the list pages. The prompt won’t be a pop-up, but an inline prompt like for the thanks confirmation. You can read more about the planned solution and what influenced this decision on the project page. -- Best, Johanna Strodt (WMDE) (talk) 09:46, 16 July 2018 (UTC)Reply

Technical Wishes: News from the FileExporter feature edit

Hello. In June, a first version of the FileExporter was released as a beta feature on a few first wikis. Thanks again for your feedback! Here are some news:

  • We’ve worked some more on the feature: Bugs were fixed, and new functionality added. For instance, log entries are now created for imports to make it easier to find imported files. Please be aware that we’re still in the beta phase and that the feedback process is ongoing.
  • The FileExporter is now available on all other wikis.

We’d be happy to hear your thoughts on this new version on the central feedback page. Best, Johanna Strodt (WMDE) (talk) 12:53, 16 January 2019 (UTC)Reply

Wikimania Ambassador edit

Hi!

I noticed that you have signed up as a Wikimedia Diversity Ambassador, after the Diversity Conference held in Stockholm 2017. In August this year, Wikimania will take place in Stockholm, and our goal is to use Ambassadors to reach out to local communities, to spread the news about the conference and the outcomes afterwards. The conference theme (still to be announced) will connect closely to diversity. If you would like to be involved as a Wikimania ambassador, please sign up at the Ambassador page at the Wikimania wiki!

A first thing to do, if you would like to help out, would be to translate the scholarship page at the Wikimania wiki into the language(s) you speak!

Upcoming 2019 Affiliate-selected trustee position on the Board of Wikimedia Foundation edit

Greetings @Rehman: and Wikimedia Community User Group Sri Lanka,

My name is Gerald Shields, also known as user:Geraldshields11. I am asking for your top rank vote for me in the election for one of two open trustee positions on the Wikimedia Foundation Board of Trustees.

I am asking for your vote to help support emerging communities and promote an inclusive education environment on all wiki projects. Also, I plan to promote various other issues as I mention in my statement and answers to various questions. I ask that you show your support for the issues that need to be address by voting for me as one of your preferences.

As of the 7 May 2019 list of questions, I have responded to all of the “Questions for all candidates - Questions for this individual candidate that do not apply to other candidates”. My answers give more details on why the Wikimedia Community User Group Sri Lanka should vote for me.

My candidacy information page is Affiliate-selected Board seats/2019/Nominations/Gerald Shields on Meta or can be found at Gerald Shields candidate. Thank you for your time, discussion, and consideration of my candidacy. I appreciate it.

My best regards,

Gerald Shields

Wikimedia Foundation Community Board seats: Call for feedback meeting edit

The Wikimedia Foundation Board of Trustees is organizing a call for feedback about community selection processes between February 1 and March 14. While the Wikimedia Foundation and the movement have grown about five times in the past ten years, the Board’s structure and processes have remained basically the same. As the Board is designed today, we have a problem of capacity, performance, and lack of representation of the movement’s diversity. Direct elections tend to favor candidates from the leading language communities, regardless of how relevant their skills and experience might be in serving as a Board member, or contributing to the ability of the Board to perform its specific responsibilities. It is also a fact that the current processes have favored volunteers from North America and Western Europe. As a matter of fact, there had only been one member who served on the Board, from South Asia, in more than fifteen years of history.

In the upcoming months, we need to renew three community seats and appoint three more community members in the new seats. This call for feedback is to see what processes can we all collaboratively design to promote and choose candidates that represent our movement and are prepared with the experience, skills, and insight to perform as trustees? In this regard, it would be good to have a community discussion to discuss the proposed ideas and share our thoughts, give feedback and contribute to the process. To discuss this, you are invited to a community meeting that is being organized on March 12 from 8 pm to 10 pm, and the meeting link to join is https://meet.google.com/umc-attq-kdt. You can add this meeting to your Google Calendar by clicking here. Please ping me if you have any questions. Thank you. --User:KCVelaga (WMF), 10:30, 8 March 2021 (UTC)Reply
