Project idea
editWhat is the problem you're trying to solve?
editWhat problem are you trying to solve by doing this project? This problem should be small enough that you expect it to be completely or mostly resolved by the end of this project.
Remember to review the tutorial for tips on how to answer this question.
We noticed that many of African based cultural articles on wikipedia lack images , where such exist they are of poor quality
What is your solution to this problem?
editFor the problem you identified in the previous section, briefly describe your how you would like to address this problem.
We recognize that there are many ways to solve a problem. We’d like to understand why you chose this particular solution, and why you think it is worth pursuing.
Remember to review the tutorial for tips on how to answer this question.
We have agreed partnership arrangement with GogeAfrica ( mentioned above),who have agreed to donate contents for this project.
Project goals
editWhat are your goals for this project? Your goals should describe the top two or three benefits that will come out of your project. These should be benefits to the Wikimedia projects or Wikimedia communities. They should not be benefits to you individually.
Remember to review the tutorial for tips on how to answer this question.
The goal of this project is to work with Goge Africa to get thousands of cultural images uploaded to Wikimedia Common for usage on Wikipedia and for other educational purpose. I will serve as a liaison between the organization and the Wikimedia community. Goge Africa is one of the largest cultural oriented non-governmental organization in Nigeria. Having realized the public needs for wide access to images of historical importance, the management of Goge Africa asked me to be Wikipedian in Residence in their organization for a period of 6 months so as to get their contents uploaded to Wikimedia Commons. Goge Africa will provide office space, desc and internet access. One or more of their staff will collaborate with WiR and provide Wikipedian in Residence with all materials required.
Project impact
editHow will you know if you have met your goals?
editFor each of your goals, we’d like you to answer the following questions:
- During your project, what will you do to achieve this goal? (These are your outputs.)
- Once your project is over, how will it continue to positively impact the Wikimedia community or projects? (These are your outcomes.)
For each of your answers, think about how you will capture this information. Will you capture it with a survey? With a story? Will you measure it with a number? Remember, if you plan to measure a number, you will need to set a numeric target in your proposal (i.e. 45 people, 10 articles, 100 scanned documents).
Remember to review the tutorial for tips on how to answer this question.
This project would be considered successful if
- at least 2500 uploaded files after 6 months
- at least 200 improved and/or new articles after 6 months, made by Goge Africa staff and other Wikipedians
- at least 12% of uploaded files used in new or existing articles
Do you have any goals around participation or content?
editAre any of your goals related to increasing participation within the Wikimedia movement, or increasing/improving the content on Wikimedia projects? If so, we ask that you look through these three metrics, and include any that are relevant to your project. Please set a numeric target against the metrics, if applicable.
Project plan

The Wikipedian In Residence (WIR) which could be any of the wikipedians listed below , will be at the partner's office three times in a week, between 9:00am (WAT) to 3:00pm to get contents uploaded to Wikimedia Commons and train their staff on how to contribute to Wikimedian Projects.I, Olaniyan Olushola Will be working as coordinator for the project. While the other participants will be on ground to actualised all the activities mentioned above.
Budget
editHow you will use the funds you are requesting? List bullet points for each expense. (You can create a table later if needed.) Don’t forget to include a total amount, and update this amount in the Probox at the top of your page too!
Number | Category | Item description | Unit | Number of units | Cost per unit | Total cost | Currency | Notes |
---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
1 | Wikipedian in Residence | compensation | 1 month | 6 | 600 | 3600 | USD | This compensation Includes all taxes one has to pay monthly |
2 | refreshment for volunteers | 2 | 6 | 50 | 600 | USD | Occasionally, two members of Wikimedia User Group Nigeria would come around to assist with uploading, training and so on. This would cover their refreshments. We have made provision for two members at every point in time. | |
3 | Contingencies | 1 | 100 | USD | We made provision for contingency because, Nigeria is operating at a very high inflation rate of 18% as at the time of submission of this proposal. This will serve as cushion effect for any increase in price. |
Community engagement
editHow will you let others in your community know about your project? Why are you targeting a specific audience? How will you engage the community you’re aiming to serve at various points during your project? Community input and participation helps make projects successful.

Comments In section 4.1, I read The project will start on May 1, 2017 and ends on November 30, 2017. I will be at the office everyday, between 9:00am (WAT) to 3:00pm to get the contents uploaded to Wikimedia Commons and train their staff on how to contribute to Wikimedia Projects.I'll work with my community, Wikimedia User Group Nigeria to create articles based on the images from uploaded and to improve the existing articles with text, files, photos. I will organize an edit-a-thons on a weekly basis. I will organize a contest to encourage volunteers to use uploaded files in the articles created.
It think it ought to be clarified who is going to be the "I" listed here, and/or how many people are going to be the "I". It may be one person being regularly in the office + organizing the edit-a-thon + organizing contest. Then a second person helping with the implementation of the edit-a-thon (experience shows that it is always better to be at least 2 to better assist participants). Then a third person might help at the technical level if mass uploads are needed, bots to tag, or for tracking. There are different tasks here and it is would be best if there is a little bit more input on how you intend to organize that. I do not think you, Shola, sitting at your desk from 9 till 3 is what going to happen (nor do I should it should because your specific skills would be better employed coordinating and inspiring). - @Anthere:, we have attended to your observation. Thanks Olaniyan Olushola (talk) 11:36, 17 March 2017 (UTC)
Endorse Olaniyan has demonstrated a great passion for wanting to improve Nigerian topics on wikipedia and I'm well aware of the constraints he faces. He has already done much to help the project working with Anthere and Isla on Wiki Loves Women. This grant to support him as a wikipedian in residence would allow him to focus more on what he wants to do with building up image resources.Dr. Blofeld (talk) 11:49, 12 April 2017 (UTC)
