The Joburgpedia Digitization Project is the second digitization project in the Large JoburgpediA Umbrella of Project with a New GLAM Partner (South African History Archives - SAHA) and the Historical Works of a Renowned Photo Journalist Gille De Vlieg. In this project we attempt to add Historical images about South Africa's everyday Life in Troubled Townships and Shanty Towns.
Goal
editOur goal is to introduce Wikipedia to The South African History Archives (SAHA) and its stakeholders in Johannesburg and surrounding areas. Our First project with this new GLAM partner will look at digitizing at least 300 historical photographs of a Photo Journalist and Fellow of SAHA.
The Photographs are a rich trove of life in Townships and Shanty towns under the Apartheid Era. These are works taken by Gille De Vlieg and will be released under Creative Commons Licensing.
Plan
editStrategy & Activities
editThis project is mainly a Digitization project which has an element of Edit-A-Thon, all interestingly tied-in with a GLAM Institution.
The following activities are planned :
- 2 x Edit-A-Thons for SAHA Staff and other Archivists in Johannesburg
- Digitization of 300 Historical Pictures by Gille De Vlieg to be released under CC License
Further information on the activities mentioned above follow below.
Edit-A-Thons
editWe will host 2 edit-a-thons at the SAHA buildings in Johannesburg. The edit-a-thons will be used to train SAHA Staff and other Archivists from Wits University.
Digitization
editGille De Vlieg, a renowned Photo-Journalist and Associate of SAHA has agreed to release 300 Historical Pictures under CC License. The pictures depict day to day life under Apartheid South Africa, and are high value for illustrating Wikipedia Articles.
Our relationship building efforts with SAHA is beginning to yield some fruits and we hope to secure more high value images in future.
Impact
editTarget readership (Local Wiki Projects) | Increasing reach | Participation |
---|---|---|
This project will benefit the following online communities:
|
Increasing Wikimedia's reach in the Global South is one of the salient points of Vision 2015. South Africa is crucial to this objective, as a key African hub. This project is highly anticipated and has already received a fair amount of attention in Johannesburg. | The potential of this project to increase participation is daunting. Extensive focus will be put into creating lasting contacts with those attending our Edit-A-Thons and participating in our other activities. |
Quality | Credibility | |
Wikimedia Commons still has a very poor representation of Johannesburg heritage sites. The available images are of moderate to acceptable quality. This project aims to improve the coverage of the Johannesburg heritage sites on commons and Wikipedia projects especially small languages. | The involvement of local authoritities, heritage societies as partners we will be able to improve our credibility as a Chapter and movement in handling such important issues as heritage and historical sites documentation. |
Measures of success
editWe will consider this project a success if we can achieve the following Global Metrics:
Metric description | Goal | Notes | Metric description | Goal | Notes |
PARTICIPATION (COMMUNITY) | CONTENT | ||||
---|---|---|---|---|---|
1. Number of active editors involved | 5 | [1] | 4. Number of new images/media | 300 | [2] |
2. Number of newly registered users | 10 | [3] | 5. Number of articles added | 10 | [4] |
3. Number of individuals involved | 25 | [5] | 6. Number of bytes added | TBD | [6] |
- ↑ We aim to engage University students who will have participated in the Train-The-Trainer workshops
- ↑ These are the Historical images that have been pledged by Gille De Vlieg to illustrate South African Historical Content.
- ↑ Including SAHA Staff Members and University Students.
- ↑ We estimate about 10 A class articles will be added by each Staff Member of SAHA.
- ↑ Including, existing WMZA volunteers, University students and SAHA Staff
- ↑ We did not measure this metric, due to difficulty in using the Wikimetrics tool. The tool has been made easy to use, so we will report on this item this year.
Resources and risks
editResources
editWikimedia ZA coordination team
- Dumisani Ndubane
- Bobby Shabangu
- Gille De Vlieg - SAHA Associate
- Theresa Hume
Risks
edit- The ConhillEdu Project has undergone structural changes and thus unable to supply similar monetary contributions (Part Catering and Part Transport Costs) as they did last year. As a result we have allowed for these two items in our budget to mitigate this risk.
