For Russia there was actually different request as the end date is different. Kruusamägi (talk) 09:59, 1 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]
postponed discussion there.JukoFF (talk) 10:18, 1 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]
My mistake, I added the wrong link (actually this). But anyway, Russia should at a moment have the banner up and was among the first countries to get it. Kruusamägi (talk) 14:53, 1 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]

I am sorry if i am ignorant of the practical aspects, but could we have a feedback for countries without a national jury too? For example, I made a banner for Germany since it is a big country. Maybe I can do another one for Sweden and for France in few days too. Someone did a banner for UK. Can we use them? Let me know. it's just that the fact that there is a national jury does not mean that we promote unbalance per se. I am contacting more than 200 learned societies for example, specifically to reduce this gap and I would like to use banners as well, at least for the least controversial cases (where there is no bilingualism)--Alexmar983 (talk) 12:49, 2 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Sweden is also checked. And the banner for Germany could be used also on dewiki in Belgium. I was rhinking to ask a Belgian juror to write a Belgian banner for frwiki too.--Alexmar983 (talk) 04:34, 3 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]

@Alexmar983: So I will be honest. I do not feel comfortable running such intense campaigns in countries without direct community support and without a local organised jury and potentially without coordination with local affiliates. It runs against the precedent set by Wiki Loves Monuments and Wiki Loves Earth and run against the spirit of the guidelines for CentralNotice. Lets make sure we can walk before we can run. Wiki Loves Africa is different in that it runs in low traffic countries and is a substantially smaller competition. I would be happy to run a low level campaign to logged in users. Seddon (WMF) (talk) 09:36, 3 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Seddon (WMF) we have an international jury, the national jury exists to promote, to give prizes, but that's it. WLM and WLE probably need a strong local organization, think about the lists, but we simply don't. So it is not a precedent, because for example they never tried to create an international jury for other countries. They could in some case, they should probably, but in any case the academia is a global community and goes beyond the perspective of the wikiworld. A microscope image is the same in Germany and in India, it is not about making a list or checking the laws here. Plus, we are also creating a international category too, we are discussing about that since few days. So personally we can run all of this with no problem. In any case, if it takes a wasted opportunity to learn, let's waste.
Personally, I have sent so far 350 mails to big institution because simply we can handle this, and noone in the academia will ever understand why a user from a country which has the exact same chance to get the international prize should not be informed. Because the local chapter did not want or wasn't able to give a prize? it is not even a matter of chapters... WMI is not supporting the Italian competition (I told them, they weren't interested), yet I arranged everything, mostly because I was informed (by chance) last time. So we are wasting opportunities for future countries mainly because of a comparison that does not hold IMHO. Plus to me it is good if the chapters discover that even without their blessing things are done in any case, much more healthy.--Alexmar983 (talk) 09:58, 3 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]
BTW while I go through all other possible ways to contact those users, let's see some detailed case. Since Africa was cited, as soon as we have an international category for "leftover" countries and I can make a banner in French too, we can inform Africa, right? Also, we have 3 jurors related to Switzerland and 4-5 Indians jurors in the International jury, and the Indians are all wikimedians. Is it enough to inform India and Switzerland?--Alexmar983 (talk) 10:41, 3 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]

So Seddon (WMF) in 2015 countries without a jury had 5-35% of the output of the other countries pro capita. Now after five days they are at zero. That's a sad comparison, isn't it? I will continue to spam the whole world and ask every local project, just to show that i did my best but I will insist to get everything I can . Can we at least have a banner in countries without a national affiliate? there is one ready in Romanian, can we make Romania and Moldova? I can find you someone to write in other languages, for Turkey or Japan or Croatia or Lithuania... but English is fine for me (actually even better, I want people who can write categories so it's a good selection real researcher know English nowadays)... yet I feel sorry for all those people who don't have a chance now. We are just need few days of visibility, in the end.--Alexmar983 (talk) 13:51, 5 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]

@Alexmar983: Can you post notices on all the necessary language Wikipedia's village pumps and noticeboards you'd want to run in along with a post to Wikimedia Commons, Linking to this request. We will leave it a week and pending any pushback from community members then put up banners for around two weeks. Seddon (talk) 23:53, 6 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Seddon that was already done, except in Indian languages where I delegated to the jurors. They won't reply probably, or translate it. I don't know what to do more because I left a message in the village pump of svwiki and they moved it to a less seen subsection so it is almost impossible to have feedback. And in Wikimedia commons I just asked what we are probably "entitled" to get, based on what already happened 2015, see commons:Talk:Main_Page. Or at least based on WLM. If we have to be treated like WLM for the banner, than WLM is on the infobox of the commons main page. Plus, I have asked to many transnational user groups to user their social media.
I am prepared to the worst case scenario, so in the meantime I just keep sending mails. Also, I am more than welcome to get even just one week, as long we can get a kickstart.--Alexmar983 (talk) 02:35, 7 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]
@Alexmar983: Do you have links to notices posted on the language projects? German, Romanian etc. Seddon (talk) 11:35, 7 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Seddon I give you only once there is something definitive, because they are a lot. But you can also simply open the wikipedia and check my editcounts. The first answer is from vi.wiki. Now, based on this and the Indian jurors comments by email, I think we have to make the commons page multilingual specifically for these countries with no national committees. But later, I am busy now with RL. See you soon and thx.--Alexmar983 (talk) 11:39, 7 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]

China

edit

Seddon we have to discuss mainliand China as a separate case. zhwiki is basically for Taiwan (HK and Macau too, but this is a minor detail). They handle their request probably and it's ok. Mainland China has access to enwikipedia, that is where the banner has sense. Mainly because University students read it and can understand English. So we don't need specifically a simplified Chinese zh-N banner. Now, what should we do to ge there? Suggestions:

  • ask the Project China on enwikipedia, some of their users are living in China;
  • ask whoever organized WLM in China last time;
  • ask the fragmented Chapter and UGs in the area. I wrote email and posted in their talk pages and never got an answer in the past, so maybe I can ping their main users.
  • ping random users on commons and meta and data who I know are Chinese

So if I do all of this and link here is this enough for you?--Alexmar983 (talk) 06:21, 11 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]

I had received the ping, I do not know whether I can help or not. However, I am very busy at this moment and I cannot give quick response on this issue. --WQL (talk) 09:09, 12 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]
WQL the question is, would you consider appropriate a sitenotice in mainland China (on enwikipedia and maybe also commons and zh projects who can be accessed such as zhwikisource) promoting "Wiki Science Competition" there with a link to multilingual page? Otherwise, I cannot inform anyone there, and Chinese (young) researchers cannot take part to the event.--Alexmar983 (talk) 11:50, 12 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]
@Alexmar983: I consider it possible, but November is the Asian Month, and there has been a CentralNotice in zhwp. I wonder if there would have some conflicts technically if we put two notices in a time. BTW, I am not the sysop of zhwp, it is just my personal suggestion. --WQL (talk) 12:10, 12 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]
WQL I know, this can be later, the upload ends on the 15th of Dec.. In any case, if I could have few days on enwikipedia in China even in November, I can also test better the output. I don't want zhwiki because actually enwiki in PRC is perfect target, it is consulted by people who knows English, so statistically more University students, which is precisely the target I am looking for.--Alexmar983 (talk) 13:31, 12 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]
@Alexmar983: Acturally zhwiki is also a good target since AFAIK most university students have access to zhwiki without censorship……anyway I think it approciate putting the CentralNotice to both English and Chinese Wikipedia. --WQL (talk) 13:46, 12 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]
WQL a description in English is needed. With no zh-N jurors we cannot appreciate the description if the English is poor. I wish I had a zh-N juror for that... so since we have intense workflow everywhere, no simplified zh-N translation of the landing page, I still believe that the best strategy is to target enwikipedia a first exploratory step. Later, if we get a better idea of the situation and zh-N support, zhwiki (after the end of the Asian month).--Alexmar983 (talk) 13:59, 12 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]

In any case, there three UGs of wikimedians in China. This discussion should occur on a neutral "China page" that we should create one day. I am sorry that it is happening here, but I don't use VPN and cannot acees for example zhwiki. Please discuss amongst yourselves and let us know. My ideal request is few days just on enwikipedia before the 30th and than more coverage at the end of the Asian month.--Alexmar983 (talk) 14:37, 12 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]
