edit- Strongly against setting any future banners about Wikimedia Russia edit-a-thons in Russian Wikipedia or other projects. This proves to be nothing but an annoyance to the editors, the banners appear almost on every page because of their quantity and there were no community discussions in Russian Wikipedia or elsewhere about whether we should be releasing multitude of banners for months and months (so there was no consensus and there is still no consensus on having banners for month and longer). The same comments go to other requests that were submitted by Frhdkazan and Wikimedia Russia. stjn[ru] 10:17, 17 April 2018 (UTC)
- Dear Oleg, please note that this banner campaign is meant to be shown to Anonymous users from Russia only. As for banner impression, during this and previous campaigns it is left to Wikimedia Central Notice admin discretion. For description of current consensus, see additional comments. Regards, --Frhdkazan (talk) 15:38, 20 April 2018 (UTC)
- There is no current consensus, you have decided that banners show the activity of Wikimedia movement to readers, others were not quick enough to act on this. There was no consensus-seeking and there is no consensus. The experience of readers browsing Wikipedia should be our top priority, so the banners that are displayed so frequent and so annoyingly (moving content down after a while of loading period) should not be used as much as it is at all possible. stjn[ru] 15:55, 20 April 2018 (UTC)
- @Saint Johann: This is irrelevant argumentation. The fact that banners annoy 1-2-10 participants is not a sufficient reason to not show them. In Wikipedia, someone is always dissatisfied with something. And at all does not testify to absence of a consensus. Consensus is not what everyone agrees with, but what everyone agrees to accept ("не то, с чем все согласны, а то, с чем все согласны мириться"). If the technology of banners is imperfect, then this is a question of technology, and not whether to show a specific banner. Banners have their own task, and it is necessary to discuss them regarding of effectiveness of its solution. The fact that you personally consider this task (and this topic) inessential does not mean that it is unimportant.--Kaganer (talk) 00:39, 23 April 2018 (UTC)
- Please don’t use terms like ‘irrelevant’ to something you disagree with. I think it’s more than relevant: per CentralNotice/Usage guidelines there should not be banner spam in projects and this looks like banner spam
and talks like banner spam. The fact that 1-2-10 participants want this banner spam because they are in the organisation that requests them is, as you say, ‘irrelevant’. stjn[ru] 08:07, 23 April 2018 (UTC)- @Saint Johann: No any problem - if you do not like Wikimedia RU and you are against Wikimedia RU events as such, then please write this directly. Please do not hide behind the displeasure of "banner spam" (and please do not expand it without justification for the whole community). Now your displeasure is unrepresentative. If these activities are useful and consistent with the Wikimedia mission, it is necessary that potential participants (both registered and unregistered) can learn about them in time. Currently, I do not know of any other effective system for informing users about such events. --Kaganer (talk) 11:27, 23 April 2018 (UTC)
- I am fine with WM-RU as long as their members don’t overwhelmingly come to the discussion that needs a representative community consensus to defend the activities of their peers. The fact that you want to misrepresent it as a ‘grudge’ against WM-RU is showing the lack of other arguments for showing five banners in 6 months and a lot more to come with every other contest, as envisioned by Farhad. stjn[ru] 12:06, 23 April 2018 (UTC)
- You personally and the whole community have all the possibilities to influence what events are being conducted by the WMRU and how they are organized and promoted. However, I do not see anyone actively taking advantage of these opportunities. --Kaganer (talk) 11:31, 23 April 2018 (UTC)
- This is not true. WMRU runs closed meetings, fails to organize video recording or any kind of remote participation, does not share the outcome of these meetings even with their own members, and fails to discuss any organizational aspects with anyone. See the whole story about: i) the participation of Wikivoyage in the football contest (below and on Wikipedia forum); ii) the organization of Wiki Loves Earth 2018 in Russia (on Wikipedia forum).
- I for one left my question to the last meetings of WMRU. I never got any response. --Alexander (talk) 11:55, 23 April 2018 (UTC)

- PS: Personally, I'm also annoyed with banners, but I agree to accept it, because for me it's a way to learn about the events of Wikimedia. I most likely will not see notifications on the forums.--Kaganer (talk) 00:39, 23 April 2018 (UTC)

- Against per stjn. Need more banners? This is a bad design and a bad idea in itself.--Deltahead (talk) 14:41, 21 April 2018 (UTC)
- @MBH & Deltahead: You can treat this as a sort of Wikipedia Outreach in the Russian Federation. The purpose is to welcome new Users into our volunteer movement - through topics they might be interested to write about, or possibly prizes these contests offer them. As for these banners themselves & their poor design - it shouldn't really disturb you, as only Anonymous Readers will see them.--Frhdkazan (talk) 16:07, 21 April 2018 (UTC)
- My comment in the other request applies here as well. Not only would it be a good idea to assess the results of previous Central Notice campaigns before applying for the new one, it also gives other organizers invaluable information on how to use (or not to use) the Central Notice. --Alexander (talk) 17:46, 21 April 2018 (UTC)
- Alexander, I have seen clearly positive effect on smaller Wikipedias in the languages of Russia communities from having banners (either CentralNotice or Sitenotice). I didn't have time to make detailed statistics study for ruWP (it is larger, so you can't see it with a naked eye or as quick), but I feel I have grounds to be confident it will have positive effect.--Frhdkazan (talk) 20:49, 21 April 2018 (UTC)
- Support. --Kaganer (talk) 00:40, 23 April 2018 (UTC)
- Such banners do not attract new editors. New editors do not participate in such competitions for writing articles in general. Banners in this form and under such conditions of competitions are useless. But that's obsessive advertising - it's bad. This is spam as a matter of fact. --Wanderer777 (talk) 18:39, 23 April 2018 (UTC)
- Support, Farkhad's efforts are aimed to attract new Wikipedia editors. There's no need to distract him from that. Farkhad has statistical evidence of it's not being "spam". Wikimedia events are not spam. --Ssr (talk) 09:24, 7 May 2018 (UTC)
Wikivoyage
editHere, I would like to focus on Wikivoyage, which is listed as one of the target projects. In fact, nobody showed up on any language version of Wikivoyage to inform us that the edit-a-thon is running, and the Central Notice request has been submitted. But that's not all, unfortunately.
The edit-a-thon is about Russian cities, their sights and infrastructure, so it is precisely the topic of Wikivoyage in general and Russian Wikivoyage in particular. I contacted the organizers at least three times (one, two, three) and asked if Wikivoyage could be part of the edit-a-thon, but I never got any meaningful response and typically got no response at all. I don't want to be mean here, and I believe that different sister projects should help each other, also with the Central Notice, but it is extremely strange to advertise the edit-a-thon in a project that does not participate where it clearly should. Therefore, I am against displaying this Central Notice in Wikivoyage. --Alexander (talk) 17:46, 21 April 2018 (UTC)
- Alexander, Wikivoyage is actually included into this contest (see Special Nomination 3 in Russian version). I feel I have noted it being included by Dmitry JukoFF (probably after discussions with WMRU guys during March 19th meeting). I act as a volunteer translator for WMRU, but I am often busy with my daily Wikipedias in the languages of Russia chores, so neither English, nor Tatar page of the contest yet reflects this. Feel free to add this into English. Hope this sets things straight. Otherwise, I agree that communication is an issue in WMRU & I hope to change this somehow. --Frhdkazan (talk) 20:39, 21 April 2018 (UTC)
- Well, Wikivoyage was added in the most covert way. Neither I nor anyone else at Wikivoyage were aware of this, and the text there does not make any sense, because one can't create Wikivoyage articles about individual attractions. This is against all Wikivoyage policies, and it's not surprising that no edits were made at Wikivoyage as part of this edit-a-thon. We shall discuss this internally, but for now I stick to my earlier opinion against the banner. --Alexander (talk) 21:00, 21 April 2018 (UTC)
- But I also feel that having detailed minutes of Wikimedia Russia meetings published in a timely manner & other communication-related improvements are necessary.--Frhdkazan (talk) 06:51, 22 April 2018 (UTC)
- You forgot to quote the last sentence, Мы напишем в ближайшие дни подробнее! (We will tell you more soon). So it was not an overstatement. --Alexander (talk) 08:48, 22 April 2018 (UTC)

- We do not need this banner at the Russian Wikivoyage.--Ymblanter (talk) 18:04, 23 April 2018 (UTC)
- We do not need this banner at the Russian Wikivoyage and don't support it's fake contest.-- Digr (talk) 18:48, 23 April 2018 (UTC)
Summary from English Wikivoyage: 3 oppose votes, no support votes. The community did not express any interest in this edit-a-thon. --Alexander (talk) 18:50, 24 April 2018 (UTC)

editApproved for ru.wp & en.wp / Declined for wikivoyage. Seddon (talk) 04:16, 8 May 2018 (UTC)
Comment.
- Metrics: The community has asked for campaigns to be measured for their success, a request that is fair. It is therefore requested that after each campaign, the number of new editors who join and participate, and the number of articles created/edited and if possible, the amount of information added during a competition be reported.
- Frequency of campaigns: Community members have mentioned the frequency of banner campaigns being excessive and it is requested that WMRU take note of this, when planning future campaigns. It's recommended that only one campaign run any one time. There should ideally be breaks between campaigns where no banners are being shown to users to avoid banner fatigue/banner blindness.
- Targetting: To ensure that these campaigns do not cause unnecessary disruption and annoyance to experienced community editors. Future banner campaigns that aim to target unregistered and new users only should include a maximum edit count threshold.
- Other methods of communication: Email, talk pages and other means should be explored as a less intrusive means of seeking more experienced editors involvement. Seddon (talk) 04:30, 8 May 2018 (UTC)
I've no idea if this was running but its 5th of June already, so closing the request. --Base (talk) 18:51, 5 June 2018 (UTC)
