Train the Trainer Program
Train the Trainer (TTT) is a residential training workshop to groom leadership skills among the Indian Wikimedia community members.

CIS-A2K believes that in every experienced Wikimedian, there is a trainer. Trainers are like candles that can light up many other candles. They can inspire many other Wikimedians. The workshop attempts to groom such trainers. After five successful iterations of Train the Trainer in 2013, 2015, 2016, 2017, and 2018. CIS-A2K is going to organize the sixth iteration of the program in 2019.

Collaboration

In this iteration of the Train-the-Trainer we asked for an expression of interest to host TTT in your city. Please see the page here for details. We got 2 applications, and this year we are going to host TTT in Vishakhapatnam, in collaboration with VVIT WikiConnect.

Points to Note

Eligibility

Any active Wikimedian contributing to any Indic language Wikimedia project (including English) is eligible to apply.
An editor must have 600+ edits on Zero-namespace before 31 March 2019.
Anyone who has the interest to conduct offline/real-life Wiki events.
Note: anyone who has already participated in an earlier iteration of TTT, cannot apply.

An editor with 100 edits on project Name-space such as (Wikipedia:, Wikipedia talk, Wikisource:, Wikisource talk)

Pre-event

Pre-event works given.
A candidate may need to inform their respective community about their candidature and participation.

Event

The participants are supposed to arrive at the venue on 0th day and attend all the days of the program. Partial attendance not allowed.
Participants are not allowed to bring friends or relatives to the event unless it is absolutely necessary (only with prior information and approval).
All participants should bring their laptops. Participants without a laptop have to inform earlier.

Support

Travel support will be provided to participants.
Accommodation will be provided to participants.
Food will be served according to the participant's dietary preferences (non-veg, veg, etc.)

Please fill this form to show your interest to join. The last date of signing up is 7 May 2019. Please fill the form in details.
You may post on your project village pump about the application. A post may look like (example) "Hello, I am interested to participate in TTT2019, and I have applied for the same. So far I have been working on "this", "this". I wish to learn "A", "B"."
Post on village pump is not mandatory, but it will great to see applications which are discussed/endorsed by the communities.
In an effort to encourage participation from women, at least 25% of the participants at TTT 2019 would comprise of women Wikimedians.

Event report

Train the trainer 2019 is the sixth iteration of Train the trainer program and is conducted in Visakhapatnam. CIS-A2K organized this event in collaboration with VVIT WikiConnect. The event happened on 31 May, 1-2 June 2019 while 30 May is considered as Day 0.

Day 0

Day 0 began with a round of introductions which also has an icebreaking component in it. During introductions participants, organizers, and trainers introduced themselves and someone from the room shared an interesting fact about them. All the participants' names were written in chits and participant who introduced themselves selected next one by picking up one chit from the fishbowl. This activity helped participants to know each other and start a conversation among themselves. This followed by an introduction to Code of conduct by User:Lahariyaniyathi and Sneha.

Day 1

User:Tito (CIS-A2K) started the day with Introduction to Train the trainer 2019. He introduced the concept of TTT, previous iterations of the program and explained how this program evolved and improved over time. User:Lahariyaniyathi and Sneha lead activity around Code of conduct where they asked participants to read Code of conduct and encouraged them to raise concerns or suggestions around CoC. Organizers randomized the participants into various groups. This is aimed to break peer groups and help participants get in touch with remaining others.

Towards morning tea there was a session by User:Shyamal and User:Lahariyaniyathi about "Why offline activity and outreach events, meetups". Session leads to a discussion about designing online and offline events. Discussion around what kind of events worked well-gathered insights about both offline and online events. Trainers helped participants to understand that offline events can be used to strengthen various Wikimedia projects and not just Wikipedia. Participants were asked to think of ideas for activities that can strengthen projects like Wikisource, Wikimedia Commons, Wikidata, etc., and write it down. Tea break followed this session.

Basics of conducting an Edit-a-thon TTT 2019

Post-tea, User:Tito (CIS-A2K)'s session about Meetups in India started. Trainer explained Participants from Telugu, Kannada, Punjabi, Marathi, and Bengali language projects briefly gave background and impact of Wiki meetups happening (or happened) in their communities. User:AshLin presented about "Basics of conducting an Edit-a-thon". In this presentation, he covered about Types of edit-a-thons, Reasons to run, Skills needed for trainers, Possible issues, Planning, etc., User:KCVelaga presented about "Wiki Loves X" contests. He explained History and Challenges of these contests by giving examples from various Wiki loves contests. User:Shyamal shared his experience as a Jury member of Wiki Loves Monuments. Participants discussed various aspects related to Wiki Loves contests, like Selection of Jury, Cite Notices, Co-ordinating with other contests, etc., User:Shyamal spoke about GLAM. He spoke about his experience in the National Museum Project. By sharing his experience in this project, He also provided insights about how things work in GLAM organizations. The discussion happened around Resource exchange, Digitization, and Archives.

Post-Evening tea, Hands-on session which involved Group activity started. Participants were asked to start discussing an idea that they thought during the morning and turn that into a project. They were asked to discuss the Objective, Design, Impact, and Evaluation of the project. After the activity, groups presented charts which illustrated their project to everyone. These project ideas included Education activities in classrooms, Advocating to include a chapter about Wikipedia in curriculum, Training Journalists on Wikimedia Commons, Improving a Newly started Wikipedia (Santhali) and Digitizing Artefacts and rare books.

The day concluded with an announcement about the next day's schedule. Some of the participants spoken in their native languages where other participants or organizers translated that into English.

Day 2

User:Shyamal started listing tools a trainer needed to learn. He also started an exercise in which participants maps what are the tools they already learnt and what are the tools they need to learn.

This exercise followed by Revolving cafe session. In this session, User:AshLin, User:Shyamal, User:KCVelaga, User:Lahariyaniyathi, User:Pavan Santhosh (CIS-A2K), and User:Jayprakash12345 who are going to explain one topic each sets their learning cafe in one of the tables. Every 15 minutes they introduce their topics to one of the groups that comes to the Cafe and groups of participants will go to the next cafe for the next 15 minutes. Participants learnt about topics like Special pages, Wikimedia Stats, GLAM, etc., in this session.

The field trip started post-lunch which was lead by User:Shyamal and User:Pavan Santhosh (CIS-A2K). Participants and organizers left the venue to reach Visakhapatnam Museum. Museum authorities provided special permission for TTT participants to take photographs of artefacts. Prof. G. Viswanath Kumar who is a researcher in conservational architecture joined TTT team for this field trip. He explained architectural aspects of the heritage building (named Duch Bungalow) in which maritime museum was set up. Participants took pictures of artefacts. The maritime museum, Archeological museum and a general collection of artefacts are collectively known as Visakhapatnam museum. User:KCVelaga explained replicas of Warships from Visakhapatnam class and Delhi class to some of the participants. After Museum visit participants visited Kailasa Giri, Beach and reached the hotel.

Day 3

The first session on day 3 is about Important mailing lists. User:Ananth (CIS-A2K) showed various mailing lists and explained about their role in Wikimedia communities' communication. One of the participants User:Neechalkaran explained about role of Village pump in Wikimedia communities' discussion and policymaking.

Revolving cafe session where User:Ananth (CIS-A2K), User:Shyamal, User:AshLin, User:Lahariyaniyathi and User:Pavan Santhosh (CIS-A2K) explained about topics like CIS-A2K request page & support to community, Wikimedia foundation grants structure, etc., were introduced to participants. Post revolving cafe, there was a session about History of Free Knowledge and Open Source Movement. This was followed by Q & A session. This is followed by a session about an overview of the Centre for Internet and Society's works by Sunil Abraham and Sneha.

Post lunch a session on GLAM Does and Don'ts by User:Shyamal started. Shyamal conducted a quiz about what pictures taken by participants in Day 2 museum are allowed to upload commons and what is not allowed. While clicking pictures to upload commons he suggested that one should look at 1. Usability, 2. Copyrights. VVIT Wikiconnect students presented their Wiki club activities

The training session aimed to understand and appreciate differences in the community was conducted by Sunil. During this session brainstorming on gender, class, age, caste and other differences in community and how a trainer can support people from various backgrounds happened. Sunil conducted another exercise that gathered feedback about the code of conduct. Sunil and User:Lahariyaniyathi provided an overview of the strategy process. User:Satdeep Gill introduced participants about survey running by WMF about campaigns and contests. The event concluded with feedback provided by participants about TTT 2019.
