Indic Wikisource Proofreadthon

Indic Wikisource Community have participated two number all India level online Indic Wikisource Proofreadthon in May 2020 and November 2020 on Wikisource. The online event conducted by CIS-A2K. This was ten and fifteen days Online Proofreadthon in May 2020 and November 2020 respectively, where the participants contested among their language-specific an all-India basis.In India, 12 Indic language base Wikisource but all communities don't have any experience with the online Proofreadthon and never organized such things.

May 2020 Proofreadthon

From the end of March 2020, all Indian level COVID19 pandemic lockdown imposed by the Government of India, The Indic community have utilized their homestay. Ten language communities participated in the Proofreadthon except for Hindi and Malayalam out of 12 languages Wikisource. Each community selected the books to be Proofread by the 195 participants. Total of 200 books proofread in this edithon/contest. A total of 22446 pages and 10617 pages was proofread and validated respectively.

November 2020 Proofreadthon

Each community selected the books to be Proofread by the 280 participants. Total of 372 books proofread in this edithon/contest. A total of 50771 pages and 27566 pages was proofread and validated respectively. Below the statistics graph of the contest. In this contest total 12 Indic Wikisource community participated out of 12.


Tamil Wikisource workshop at SSSS Jain College for Women

An one day wikisource workshop was conducted at Shri Shankarlal Sundarbai Shasun Jain College for Women, Chennai, India. The event was conducted on 24 February 2020. The event focussed on editing in Tamil language wikisource project. The event was attended by around 70 students plus 5 Professors. The trainers for the event were திவ்யாகுணசேகரன் and Balajijagadesh. The event was organised by tshrinivasan on behalf of Kaniyam foundation. The detailed description of the event can be seen here. Tamil Wikisource Edit-a-Thon for School Students

On March 3, 2020 Tamil wikisource editathon was conducted from 9.30 am to 4.30 pm. 26 students participated in the editaton. The event was organised and mentored by Sridhar_G. The consultation and remote support by Balajijagadesh. The event was financially supported by CIS-A2K. The event took place in the computer lab of the Government school at Nangur.

Rabindranath Month proofreading contest, 1427

West Bengal Wikimedians User Group organized a 3-months long proofreading contest on Bengali Wikisource from May 8, 2020 to August 7, 2020 celebrating the occassion of birth and death anniversary of Nobel laureate author Rabindranath Tagore for the second time. 24 books written by the said author were selected for the participants to proofread. 19 users enrolled, 3632 pages were proofread and 2812 pages were validated. Officials of CIS-A2K and Wikimedia Bangladesh chapter later distributed prizes to the top 10 contributors.

Ishwar Chandra Vidyasagar 200th birth anniversary proofreading contest

West Bengal Wikimedians User Group organized a month long proofreading contest on Bengali Wikisource from August 26, 2020 to September 26, 2020 to celebrate the 200th birth anniversary of Bengali reformer Ishwar Chandra Vidyasagar. 25 books written by the said author were selected for the participants to proofread. 14 users enrolled and 3382 pages were proofread. Officials of CIS-A2K and Wikimedia Bangladesh chapter later distributed prizes to the top 5 contributors.

Like last year (but online), VIGNERON did a presentation about Wikisource, statistics and dynamics at the Celtic Knot language conference in July 2020 (proposal and slides, video on YouTube).

IFLA Wikicite Discussion Series

VIGNERON was invited by the IFLA Wikidata Working Group to held an online presentation about Wikidata and Wikisource for IFLA Wikicite Discussion Series. The vieo was released on 24th September and a blogpost on Diff as written.

COVID impact

Due to COVID-19, many offline events were canceled. In particular, Wikimania 2020 who is the yearly occasion to meet between the scattered members of the user group and people contributing on Wikisource.

The Wikisource Conference 2020 was scheduled - with the help and support of Wikimedia Poland - but didn't happened (see Grants:Conference/WCUG Wikisource/Wikisource Conference 2020 for the proposal).

Community Wishlist Survey

In 2020 the Community Tech team worked on improving WS Export in order to fulfill the number 1 proposal of the year's Community Wishlist Survey. This work involved firstly migrating the tool to use the Symfony PHP framework, and then working on a host of improvements around reliability (e.g. tracking usage and errors), performance (e.g. caching API requests), and accuracy in exports (e.g. switching to Parsoid HTML output and fixing various issues with converting MediaWiki HTML to EPUB XHTML). The work with WS Export will be ongoing in 2021 Check out the project's Phabricator board for up-to-date information about the work being done.

Pagelist widget GSoC project

Sohom Datta is one of the students that the Wikimedia Foundation selected for the 2020 Google Summer of Code. Sam Wilson (primary mentor) and Satdeep Gill (co-mentor) were mentoring this project. The Wikisource Pagelist Widget is a tool to easily create pagelists on Wikisource.
