Wikipedia Asian Month 2020

edit

This year, we had a record total of 57 Wikipedia / Wikivoyage projects sign up to participate (including several first timers) in Wikipedia Asian Month 2020. Of the 57 language-versions of Wikipedia / Wikivoyage that signed up, 22 of them had at least 10 participants, leaving 35 with less than 10 as part of the event.

As was done in previous years, we were able to involve hundreds of editors to contribute over 6,672 articles related to Asia. XXX of those fit our standard and were accepted. We have a total number of 581 participants who created and submitted at least 1 article for Wikipedia Asian Month. Of all the participants, XXX editors created and submitted more than 4 articles (the requirement to receive a Wikipedia Asian Month postcard).

In consideration of the Fountain tool didn't working for around 5 hours, Wikipedia Asian Month 2020 contest has been extended for 5 hours past November to let the participants from different time zones submit the articles before the system closes. The articles submitted till December 1st, UTC 05:00, 2020.

Problems We faced Achieved outcome Explanation
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, our supporting Affiliate - Wikimedia Taiwan cannot send anything through international postal systems to several countries at this moment.

We send all the participants digital postcards and digital certifications for organizers to the email address they provided for postcard progress tracking.
Some teams are not familiar with the usage of the Fountain tool.

We helped to build usage guidance of the Fountain tool, including creating an edit-a-thon, admin approving process, changing sittings, submitting articles, judging articles process.
Some participants cannot receive their postcards smoothly and ask the progress several times.

We designed the specific report channel including all the information related to postcards and certification (e.g progress report, deliver failed list, reporting channel) for participants.
We hope to have a long lasting impact and documentation will be crucial for any future member of the team. They help ensure longevity during leadership changes for future references.

This year, we created some practices and documentation for our organizing processes and methods of Wikipedia Asian Month events, including introduction, international team process, MassMessage, CentralNotice, event page, etc. These guides could lower the barrier, and reduce the workload for organizers.

We also compile guideline materials for everyone involved with Wikipedia Asian Month, especially local organizers. We hope the guides of online events and onsite events can assist local organizers in holding the Wikipedia Asian Month events smoothly.

Although Wikipedia Asian Month international team already enacted Rewarded Participants' Data Privacy Statement, some participants still worried about the safety of data collection and storage.

To protect participants' data, we will use a more trustworthy platform for data collection and try to translate to different languages for different participants.
