notes

This was a meetup after the COVID-19 outbreak.

The group started by saying how things have changed, what it is like to be in quarantine.

Wikimedians in the time of COVID-19. How is everybody? Thomas -here in Berlin we have organized a Queer Relief group so that queer people who need help can get matched to people with help to give. Things are grim here in Europe and it is scary and weird. Hopefully in a few months things will be back to normal. Pharos - I am trying to get a walk everyday. This might not be right for everyone. Pax - As an introvert things have not changed much for me. I often stayed inside. I have musician friends who have a hard time because they do not have their shows. Chorus singers are not able to collaborate online. Musician friends are asked to bring all their classes online but they are not set up for this. Rachel: Right now a little stressed. University leadership doing the best they can in a crisis and having daily town hall meetings via Zoom...everyone else's stress and questions (esp repeated questions over and over when information is published) is stressing me out. Working from home sounds great but not so great because you have to wait longer to get things done and you can't walk to peoples' offices to bug them. Patience is hard sometimes. Our local Queer Peers table will have a meeting on Saturday to discuss how to help our community during this time (LGBTQ+ community that is) Carlin - just on the topic of nature I have enjoyed today opening my window and listening to birds. If you have a window, maybe have a peek, and see what is the world that is not the crazy internet. Amir - I do not commute anymore. I wake up in the bed and just start a meeting. I also get to spend more time with my boyfriend. Berlin is not hit so hard. The southwest of Germany is hit harder because of Carnival. Z: In Croatia we were thinking we were doing well until a few days. About 5-6 days ago about 50 people tested positive for virus. Many people got infected from others traveling home. Today we got the first person confirmed to have died. Now that this person has died many people are much more alert and disciplined. Online activities Thomas: I write an article a day, that's helpful. Jeffrey: How do you find sources for what you need? Thomas - I am editing for Queer musicians. I have a list of people about whom I want to write. When I have time, I write one. For resources I use Google. This is not as well grounded as a library but this is what I do now. Rachel: We still have access to all online library resources and the Internet to cite sources for Wikipedia articles, and we have each other too :) Right now we are not ILLing physical books because of COVID. I am way way behind on Wiki editing because of work commitments, but i have a list of projects.

Paul Kaefer and I are trying to get some queer LGBTQ+ folx of color added to Wikipedia, and I have a list of articles about LGBTQ+ people or topics to improve and update
Pussy Riot is very, very active now and I have to sit and work on their page with some of the new things they have done

Amir: I like to translate articles from English to Persian. It's easy to find articles to create in Persian Wikipedia using Wikidata query service Fae: Richard: Andrew Lih had an old podcast from 2006 called Wikipedia Weekly which has been paused. He and some others just posted a new episode of this.

Queering Wikipedia Conference 2020 Update postponed or cancelled due to COVID-19 not possible to host a conference in Austria in May Wikimedia Austria said that they could do it in early 2021 Wikimedia Austria is cancelling flights and trying to get reimbursement for them Online day instead?

Re: Online day--we were thinking to have the annual Wikimedia LGBT+ meeting online and have a little programming around that meeting. Not a ton of programmng--maybe one speaker and one workshop. Something that would be accessible for everyone. Not a replacement for the to be rescheduled 2021 conference.
could do an afternoon on the day the conference would have taken place

Wikimedia Austria does not wish to do the online organization Right...since we might not have sufficient support in the short term, if there is massive interest in having something online for 2020 I am suggesting something very simple. The UG meeting as the central focus, with one keynote perhaps, and one workshop where folx can learn how to do something at home What are our needs as a User Group? Wiki LGBT annual report - https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikimedia_LGBT%2B/2019 Rachel: Are we still thinking about doing the weekly online chats during COVID-19? Who will be organizing / facilitating those? Z: What could be less demanding than participating in a user group meeting or a conference? Not everyone has capacity to organize and present. Maybe video and audio organizing would be hard for a first assembly. Could we organize some collaborative activities which do not require people to join a live event, either in person or virtually?

Rachel: We definitely need someone to monitor chat and handle things on that end for accessibility. Even if we do not have audio we may have hearing impaired people who want to participate and so on. Hopefully my computer will be back to normal soon...something to think about for those who have permanent audio issues though.
               Jeffrey:
