The future of Vector 2022 and software decision-making. A meeting with Selena Deckelmann

Let's talk about how the process of deploying and changing Vector 2022 has gone, what the current plan is, and what may be the future of software decision-making!

I'm gonna refer to English Wikipedia, but the topic is universal, really.

For over two weeks, we (the Foundation) and English Wikipedians have been having a discussion about the steps after the closure of the Rollback of Vector 2022 RfC. I think you may be interested in the latest response from our team posted on April 6. We invite you to that discussion, but also to a meeting with Selena Deckelmann, Chief Product & Technology Officer at the Wikimedia Foundation.

We want to hear and talk about

  • Your thoughts around the deployment of Vector 2022 on English Wikipedia and other wikis
  • What the current plan is (we would like to go over our current prototype)
  • What are the options for the future of software decision-making (a discussion about the format of RfCs in this context)

This meeting will take place on Thursday, April 13th at 18:30 UTC on Zoom (click here to join / dial by your location).  We look forward to hearing your thoughts and comments. SGrabarczuk (WMF) (talk) 00:16, 8 April 2023 (UTC)

Draft OKRs of Wikimedia Foundation's Product & Tech department annual plan

Back in February, I put a message here1 announcing the first steps in the WMF's Annual Planning process - documenting its Product & Technology departments' draft work portfolios (nominally called "buckets").

Now, I'm pleased to come back to notify that Part 2 of this documentation is now available, covering the departments' proposed Objectives and Key Results (OKRs). This draft documentation is published in the spirit of trying to get something public, and published, even though it is not finished yet so that there is time to seek and incorporate feedback. The full WMF annual plan draft is coming soon and there will be several (real-time and on-wiki) ways to comment there too.

If you are interested in reading these draft WMF Product and Tech OKRs and giving your feedback - please add it to the associated subheading on the talkpage. LWyatt (WMF) (talk) 15:09, 12 April 2023 (UTC)

Make language variant active

Hi! I would ask, is there someone who can help to make the language variant Romanian Tatar active for translation? Zolgoyo (talk) 13:47, 26 April 2023 (UTC)

@Zolgoyo the creator of the task you linked, phab:T332922 closed it, but there was no notes or config linked. Maybe it isn't done or should be linked to another task, I suggest you start by asking there. — xaosflux Talk 13:25, 9 May 2023 (UTC)
Hi @Xaosflux:, the variant is added (Portal:Crh-RO), but the English name "Romanian Tatar" is not added (Romanian Tatar). Zolgoyo (talk) 18:37, 9 May 2023 (UTC)
@Zolgoyo I'm sorry, what is it you want us to actually "do"? Are you trying to judge a consensus to support another development task (which one?), or do you want us to make an on-wiki change? — xaosflux Talk 20:43, 9 May 2023 (UTC)
@Xaosflux All is good now, the language and also the correct name is added, you can see it in Portal:Crh-RO, but thank you for your attention :) Zolgoyo (talk) 16:55, 14 May 2023 (UTC)

Devoir Section 4

Djiinesoum (talk) 09:24, 15 April 2023 (UTC)

ChatGPT and cross wiki communication

Am I allowed to use ChatGPT to translate statements I write in English to other languages to facilitate communication to bypass the language barrier in other language Wikipedias? Shadow of the Starlit Sky (talk) 01:48, 22 April 2023 (UTC)

Polyglottery

I admire and envy polyglots. They certainly do exist. (I've known a few.) But I do have a certain scepticism; and, while I have no competence in any of the languages listed here (drawn to my attention via this Q&A), their combination seems remarkable. Am I too cynical? -- Hoary (talk) 01:15, 22 April 2023 (UTC)

Let me rephrase. I find it very hard to believe that people have enough proficiency in a great array of languages, including two or more minority languages (say, Crimean Tatar and Veps) that are unrelated to any of the others, to be trusted to write material that's informative, grammatical, comprehensible, etc in those languages. (There's been at least one infamous case of failed enthusiasm for writing in a single non-acquired language.) Am I right to worry about this; and if I am, is there any attempt to monitor contributions in such wide arrays? (The greatest such feat that I've noticed is an old one, [1].) -- Hoary (talk) 02:41, 24 April 2023 (UTC)

Seeking volunteers for the next step in the Universal Code of Conduct process

Hello,

As follow-up to the message about the Universal Code of Conduct Enforcement Guidelines by Wikimedia Foundation Board of Trustees Vice Chair, Shani Evenstein Sigalov, I am reaching out about the next steps. I want to bring your attention to the next stage of the Universal Code of Conduct process, which is forming a building committee for the Universal Code of Conduct Coordinating Committee (U4C). I invite community members with experience and deep interest in community health and governance to nominate themselves to be part of the U4C building committee, which needs people who are:

  • Community members in good standing
  • Knowledgeable about movement community processes, such as, but not limited to, policy drafting, participatory decision making, and application of existing rules and policies on Wikimedia projects
  • Aware and appreciative of the diversity of the movement, such as, but not limited to, languages spoken, identity, geography, and project type
  • Committed to participate for the entire U4C Building Committee period from mid-May - December 2023
  • Comfortable with engaging in difficult, but productive conversations
  • Confidently able to communicate in English

The Building Committee shall consist of volunteer community members, affiliate board or staff, and Wikimedia Foundation staff.

The Universal Code of Conduct has been a process strengthened by the skills and knowledge of the community and I look forward to what the U4C Building Committee creates. If you are interested in joining the Building Committee, please either sign up on the Meta-Wiki page, or contact ucocproject wikimedia.org by May 12, 2023. Read more on Meta-Wiki.

Best regards,

About Test Commons

@Jdforrester (WMF) and MArostegui (WMF): The test commons was being closed tagged for deletion on phab:T213295 without following the procedure of Closing projects policy. Also there are some users mentions the benefit of keeping test commons on phab:T333574. As a result, I believe that test commons should not be deleted at the moment. 132.234.229.168 04:14, 6 April 2023 (UTC)

Hi there, this isn't really the venue for feedback on technical changes like this, but I can give you some pointers. As part of the agreement to create test-commons in 2018 we said it was only temporary and would be removed; that was mostly done in T213295 in February, following that agreement. I agree that it looks like some bits of the closing haven't been completed yet, including that task you link. You should follow-up on T213295 about outstanding items.
Incidentally, I don't think the policy about closing content projects applies to non-content "test" technical projects (which shouldn't exist in production at all anyway; Test Wikipedia, Test2 Wikipedia, and Test Wikidata are all confusing messes compared to real community projects). Jdforrester (WMF) (talk) 15:22, 6 April 2023 (UTC)
Hello @Jdforrester (WMF): I think you have misunderstood what I said. phab:T333574 is a bug occur in both commons and test commons. The test commons may help to fix the bug occurred in commons. What I mean is that I hope the test commons can be reopen to fix this bug. 132.234.228.150 08:07, 12 April 2023 (UTC)
Is it possible not to delete test commons? There are a number of CentralAuth accounts being created in test commons. Deleting test commons may cause those accounts losing their home wiki, which is not a good idea as having a home wiki is beneficial to some tools, such as this one. 132.234.228.198 08:46, 12 May 2023 (UTC)
