HELP ILLUSTRATE WIKIPEDIA : EVERY YEAR, PHOTOS FROM THE CONTEST SHOULD ILLUSTRATE Wikipedia articles (*) !

Every year, thousands of images are uploaded to Wikimedia Commons database as part of the Wiki Loves Africa photo contest.
But not every picture makes it into Wikipedia... and to be fair, not all images should make it there. Only the best, only the most useful, the most intriguing. A picture should only be added when it improves an article.
Sometimes, a user will use an image to illustrate an article in a language... let's say English... but perhaps... it makes sense to also use that same image in the equivalent article in a different language !

The page below suggest additions of images to one source language to a target language. Check it out...

Insert an image already used in one language wikipedia to another article in a different language wikipediaEdit

Images from Wiki Loves Africa have primarily been inserted into French speaking articles (though some of them are on the English wikipedia, the Arabic etc.).
When an image has been inserted into a wikipedia article in French, and an equivalent article exists in English, there are chances that the article used on the French article be interesting to illustrate the article in English (this can be said of all languages).

So the list below give suggestions of images used in one language, that could be added to another language. Pick up your choices and insert Wiki Loves Africa images into Wikipedia articles to help decolonize the encyclopedia ;)

This list needs to be updated manually. So when you inserted an image, considering removing or stricking the line of what has been done.

Participation to WPWP CampaignEdit

What is WPWP ?
Wikipedia Pages Wanting Photos (WPWP) is an annual campaign where Wikipedians across Wikipedia language projects and communities add photos to Wikipedia articles lacking images. It runs from July 1st 2020 till August 31st 2020.

Why WPWP ?

This is to promote the use of digital media files collected from various photography contests, photowalks organized by the Wikimedia community, on Wikipedia article pages. Photos help to grasp the reader's attention better than a wall of text, illustrate content, and make the article more instructive and engaging for readers. Thousands of images have been donated and contributed to Wikipedia Commons via various advocacy programs, photowalks, and contests including international photography contests such as Wiki Loves Monuments, Wiki Loves Africa, Wiki Loves Earth, Wiki Loves Folklore, etc. Yet relatively few of these photos have been used on Wikipedia articles. Today, the Wikimedia Commons hosts millions of photo images but only a tiny portion of these have been used on Wikipedia article pages. This is a huge gap that this project aims at bridging.

About Wiki Loves Africa participation to WPWP

The Wiki Loves Africa team wants to participate to WPWP 2020 in the following way :
We want to push for the insertion of images submitted as part of former Wiki Loves Africa photo contests into Wikipedia articles for the following languages : Igbo (ig), Swahili (sw), Yoruba (yo), Luganda (lg), Hausa (ha), Shona (sn), Amharic (am), Lingala (ln) and Afrikaans (af). The participant with the most quality insertion of images in any of those languages will be duly celebrated and offered a voucher of US 100.

Quick FAQEdit

Why only those languages ? and not others ?

We decided to push for the improvement of those wikipedias

Can we mix languages ?

Yes you can. If you understand several of those languages, feel free to do that

What do we mean by quality insertion

We will only consider insertions that makes sense. We reserve the right to dismiss people who visibly try to trick the system (as in, adding images irrelevant to the article, adding too many images to one article etc.)

Do we need to upload pictures ?

No, please only use already uploaded images from Wiki Loves Africa contest. Only those will be considered.

I am confused. Who can help ?

Contact user:anthere

What can you provide to help us identify interesting images to insert into Wikipedia articles ?'

We can provide you with
the full list of all images uploaded as part of Wiki Loves Africa in the past Wiki Loves Africa All Images
the equivalent of redlists, where an image is already inserted in another language wikipedia article (the source... generally French, English or Arabic) but is not inserted into the equivalent local language Wikipedia article (the target... ig, sw, yo, lg, ha, sn, am, ln, af)
You may find those lists above

How to add new inspirations for more languages ?Edit

The tool needed is the Glamify tool. https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/User:Ijon/GLAMify

How it works : for a given category on Wikimedia Commons, and based on images for articles based in a source language wikipedia, suggests images for articles based on another language Wikipedia

Option 1: Go to https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/User:Ijon/GLAMify and follow the steps.

Option 2: Make a request just here, such as "I would like to work on "French/Swahili"

Tech love required

The process described above could be technically improved. A Phabricator task describes the needs : https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T211441

Conclusions

  • The data examined covers images uploaded during Wiki Loves Africa since its inception. A state of the situation was recorded end of June, a couple of days before the WPWP campaign launch. The same data was examined early September, after WPWP close.
  • Except for Wiki Loves Africa 2016, the impact of the WPWP campaign on WLA images has been neglectible. There has been very little additional reuse of images on the wiki projects, hence meaning images were not particularly integrated. A slighly more significant increase was observed in 2016, but it remains limited.
  • Whilst only the top countries (top meaning "most images uploaded") are reported just above, the trends are fairly similar for the lesser contributing countries. Most countries present a very small increase in reuse, which is a sign of WPWP happening. However, the increase is low in nearly all countries. Cameroun is the only country demonstrating a statistically significant increase.
  • It is to be noted that the WPWP campaign did not improve the very poor reuse rates of Nigeria and Ghana pictures.

Wiki in Africa team was offering a Wiki Loves Africa prize
Winning prizes for users with the most Wiki Loves Africa image usage on Igbo, Swahili, Yoruba, Luganda, Hausa, Shona, Amharic, Lingala and Afrikaans Wikipedias. More info. Winner gets a US$ 100 gift voucher (
Note: To be eligible for the WLA prize, he or she must have registered their account for at least 1 year and made at least 330 mainspace edits to any language Wikipedia before 1st July 2020.)
Second note: due to difficulties to track edits done to african languages, and limited to WLA images, we have decided to offer the prize unrestricted to WLA images.

  • Our winner is Anasskoko from the Hausa community !
